Not an age so much, since there are adults still living with their parents because the parents can't take care of themselves anymore

So I guess the reason you're living there is more or less what matters

If the reason is just "you refuse to look for work and move out" then yeah it gets worse with age

I live with my mom but I pay most of the bills and have a job and whatnot.

But she's in her 70s and can't get around like she use to, and could probably live in her house financially but would have next to no disposable income after.

I'd say it starts to become an item of shame around 20 or 21, and generally unacceptable by 25. Though circumstances can vary.

Housing is completely unaffordable here in SoCal (Orange County, to clarify) so the norm is actually staying at home until your late 20s. I'm 27 now and sincerely hoping to be out by 30, but even between my girlfriend and I, saving enough is really rough.

I think this strongly depends on whether you consider a college student living on campus, but who returns to their parents for summer/winter breaks to have "moved out". If you don't, then any answer younger than mid-20s is pretty unreasonable. And even if you do, there are financial considerations.

People who are financially dependent on their parents but move out because of this weird peer pressure loser stigma is weird as hell to me. Most people move out of home young due to college being way far anyway, and if you are going to college wherever your parents live and still choose to move out, I hope your family's rich or else you're just really dumb. You really shouldn't be moving out until you have a stable job and savings to support yourself.

personally i dont think its ever weird. me and my brother both stayed for a while and paid rent, wed probably still be there if they hadnt decided they wanted a smaller place. for a family thats closer, i dont see why you should have to move out at all until youre ready to start your own family.

though i wanted to move out at 18 and probably should have. thats more of a personal decision though.

More Americans aged 18-34 live at home than with alone, with a spouse, or roommate. The same is the case in Canada. In some of Canada's most expensive cities, like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, almost half of all adults aged 18-34 live at home. To frame this debate as "weird" rather than acknowledging it's a reflection of economic and political priorities that lead to low income wages, high young adult debt, and a lack of affordable and social housing to control rising living expenses is short-sighted.

I didn't finally move out for good until 29 and felt really embarassed about that. While living at home allowed me to save money (I moved into a place I bought), I do regret not living on my own in college and the years after. Could have had so many great stories.

I moved out @ 18 and so did all my brothers, my sister moved to grandparents.

On point, I'd say it has to do with culture and gender.
I'm white, and think 19 is too old to live with parents, but totally ok with a female living with parents til whenever. In a lot of Asian cultures I see men living with their parents for a lot longer. I don't balk at that either.
My only point I will make is life is short, so travel. It's sad to see people not even leave their own state.

This, basically. People automatically associate "living at home" with "being 100% dependent on parents," but that doesn't have to be the case. More and more people now are living at home for longer, but being independent outside of the roof over their head... Paying rent, buying their own food, etc. Nothing wrong with that at any age.

I moved out at 22 and probably shouldn't have, since now I'm a bit strapped for cash trying to enter grad school. I'm back at home now, but I could've saved up way more money if I weren't putting most of my paychecks into rent and utilities. It's a weird social standard tbqh, and I'm glad I stopped caring about it.

But the question is, does "weird" have to mean "wrong"? If "weird" just means "unusual," then in many circles, it would be "weird" to live with your parents, even if it's not necessarily "wrong."

Well, then it's not unusual, either. As icon stated, "Live with parents" now beats out any other single category for 18-34.

It's also a stat that pretty much begs the question. 18-34 is an incredibly broad category. I assume that the percentage of people living with parents decreases very steeply from 18ish to 23ish. What about 25-34? 30-34? At what age, in other words, does living with parents stop being the most common?

Also, I'm actually not clear on the stat. What's the actual percentage? Are we talking a plurality among like 4 categories there? That could be as much as 90% or as little as 30%.

My parents consider my car and school loan payments as my rent payment so *shrug*

I've probably saved up enough to move out actually but my job is like 10 minutes away which saves me some money on gas and commute time. So it's just easier right now to use whatever I'd be spending on rent/groceries on loan payments instead.

Plus I can probably count on one hand the number of close friends I have who have moved out so I don't really feel any pressure to do so at the moment. I imagine I'll move out within 2 years though, definitely before I'm 30.
