When a game allows you to choose or create your character, what gender do you usually play as?

I've heard several people usually dudes say they're uncomfortable playing as the opposite gender, and I'm curious as to what the (highly unscientific) breakdown is.

My first character will usually be a male. I tend to lean towards female when making alts however.

Male, unless it's a game with romance elements that lacks male/male options, then usually female.

Male just because I usually try to make the character look like me.

If the game already has preset characters with designs or characteristics I usually just go with whichever one I like more.

First time generally male, but I've been known to use a female character most times after the first.

I'd say I play both about the same amount, although it just depends on the game. In general I'd say I would choose male first, then play through as female next. I try to keep it mostly even.

If it's a custom character, then male since I am male and want an extra layer of immersion.

If it's a fixed character, it really depends on their merits since in my experience they typically let you know of their strengths and possibly weaknesses.

It depends on what gender does to the game sometimes... such as in the case of ME/DA I'll swap back and forth to get different romance options... Well, even something like Fire Emblem will be similar. I'll often default to male first in all of those things (as is my gender). I've also played a female in Bethesda games where it doesn't make that much of a difference after the first playthrough at times... and then there's some games where design tells all... Most specifically? The only time I picked a male avatar in Pokemon since we've gained a choice was Ethan in HGSS. So I guess it's *mostly* male, but I voted for about equal, as I like to keep my options separate.

I feel like the only games I've played in the last few years where I've had (more or less) content-neutral choice are the Fallouts, where I've gone M (3), F (NV), M (F).

In other games I've played where I've had a choice it affects gameplay to a degree that it's not something I really consider (PSO, Borderlands)

Whenever I get the choice, I almost always pick female.

Or male halfling. Male halfling, then female, then create a character hell spawn

I always create female characters. If a game lets me create an avatar, I don't look at that character as being 'me' any more than Mario, Sonic or Lara Croft is me. They're a person in a story that I get to help tell, and my favourite stories are about crafty heroines so, given the choice, that's the type of person I'll put into the story.

Depends. Typically female characters have more work put into them while male characters are generic and bland.

Male, usually play female characters. Really depends on the game though. Like for Harvest Moon, I'll pick male. But for Skyrim or Saint's Row I'll go female. Now if there's non-cosmetic differences, it'll depend more on what each character can do. (For example I'd take Emily over Corvo, though both have some pretty great skills)

Generally the more customization I'm allowed the more likely I'm going to veer to female cause they tend to have more fun options to choose from when there's depth to the character creation, while males incline to the generic short haired dude. Generic badass short haired dude can be competitive if the female options are underwhelming but yeah.

Overall it tends to be female more often than not. Most stuff where I pick the dude more often are like shooters or Mass Effect or whatever, where there aren't a ton of options to begin with.
