What's your favorite WH40K Chaos god just based off what you read?

Mine's Papa Nurgle, although Slaanesh and its daemons get some great fanart, some of it cute which is hilariously out of place for Slaaneshi daemonettes.

Fun fact: I head canon Event Horizon (my last nom) as a very early 40K prequel - the method of FTL travel in EH, where they seem to go through some hell dimension, is remarkably similar to The Warp in 40K except that the EH didn't have a Gellar field to protect them.

I didn't expect black eyed kids to be one of my last noms, that was kind of a throwaway

63. Excerpt from Possibly in Michigan (18 points)
Nominated by: jcgamer107
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt8rfsm2mUE

Importance: 2
Fear: 8
Snake: 8

I think the word best suited to describe this is unnatural. Everything, from the "Animal, Cannibal" song to the women's synthetic sing-song dialogue creates an immediate sense of dread and uncertainty, and that's even before you take the deranged, mouth-agape cannibal stalking the two girls throughout the mall. The whole thing is very avant-garde and extremely experimental, constantly cutting back to a dance scene with everyone wearing animal masks except one person with a horribly fake human mask. I actually think the "Animal, cannibal" song is catchy and cool in an art-punk kind of way, but when put over the bodies of decaying women it takes on a whole new life and meaning. Honestly, it's a hard thing to describe and do justice to. Just watch it yourself and I'm sure you'll agree: there's just something wrong about it.

62. Corpse Party series (18.5 points)
Nominated by: greengravy294
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76vJ4awYjmo

Importance: 6.5
Fear: 6
Snake: 6

Corpse Party is quite the oddity of the gaming world. Released in 1996 for the PC-98 for Japan only, it wouldn't come to the states until 2011, on the PSP. The only Corpse Party I've played is Corpse Party: Blood Drive (which is a horrible place to start), and I would play more but the series confuses the hell out of me with horribly obtuse titles and a whole load of ports and remakes that's hard to get a grasp on. Corpse Party uses an anime style with high school characters but from what I've seen the horror parts don't fuck around, with plenty of violence, guts, and gore galore. Plot-wise, it's a revenge ghost story but the horror is extreme enough to feel really original. There's some light sexual elements to it too which can get really creepy and uncomfortable. With the exception of Book of Shadows which is a visual novel, the games are played from the top-down perspective with survival horror and RPG elements. It's a series I'd love to get into more, as soon as I unscramble these chronologically confusing sequels.

A beautifully shot video of a bear, so crisp and clear, showing the creature in all its fearful majesty and grace. Of course, the beauty and tranquility of nature in action is cut short by this horribly boring infomercial for some kind of drug, like nobody cares, I want to see the damn bear again. Thank god there's a skip button.

60. Pan's Labyrinth (film) (19 points)
Nominated by: KokoroAkechi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqYiSlkvRuw

Importance: 6.5
Fear: 5
Snake: 7.5

This dark-fantasy is a very interesting film to dissect. It presents an escapist fairy tale, with a really iconic horror villain in the Pale Man. None of it is too frightening though. The film presents an interesting dichotomy, where it's clear that the true monsters lie in humanity and the real world. Sure, that's a theme shown all too often, but Del Toro's grasp on mixing reality & fantasy present interesting character dilemmas between Ofelia and her family, especially her stepfather, a sadistic Spanish captain. There's also a split in the fantasy world, and it was a smart choice to have both the faun and Pale Man played by the same actor, Doug Jones. The Faun, charming & welcoming, while The Pale Man is cruel and disgusting. Pan's Labyrinth is sharp and brutal, and presents an interesting world in both realms of truth and fiction, telling us there will be victories as well as sad defeats for all of us.

I have the weirdest feelings about Pan's Labyrinth in that I absolutely love the adult sections and plot line but don't much care for the girl. The creatures she encounters are cool but other than that eh. Like every time it would switch to the girl I'd be like "no fuck go back to the adults fighting the regime"

Labyrinth isn't that big a deal either. Sure, it's remembered by nerds, but normal people aren't going to instantly recognize it. Compare that to Jason or Freddy where they'll instantly know it's a slasher villain even if they don't know anything else, Pan's Labyrinth isn't anywhere near that notable.

This was sort of my thinking at well. It's well-known enough but it's not something that's immediately recognizable and in my opinion, hasn't had too much influence on future dark fantasy or horror films after it.

really? I'd think both of those apply to Pan's Labyrinth :O

I mean Guillermo del Toro is basically seen as one of the faces of fantasy filmmaking and that's basically his defining film

59. Cinemassacre's Monster Madness (19 points)
Nominated by: Great_Paul
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6MV2PUAFsCFK6fPHOx9Gi22r14WkcqDZ

Importance: 3
Fear: 6
Snake: 10

Cinemassacre's Monster Monster is a series that's very important to me. I used to watch every single video Rolfe put out being a big fan of AVGN and so I checked out this series too. James Rolfe's love and care to the horror genre drew me into all sorts of films at different points in my life, but my favorite will always be the original run of Monster Madness, an abridged history of important horror films that traced all the way back to 1920's Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. I was young when the series came out and oblivious to these old classics, and this series helped open my eyes to some amazing horror films I probably would never have watched or be interested in otherwise, both old and newer. All of Rolfe's various trivia bits made each video a new treat to watch.

I wasn't too into the Godzillathon the following year, as I'm not really a Godzilla fan and find most of the films repetitive and a little boring, but luckily Monster Madness III (an alternate history of important horror films), Camp Cult (featuring little known, campy, cheesy, and outright bad films), and Sequel-a-Thon (which discussed classic horror franchises like Dracula and Frankenstein) all managed to outshine the first run with incredibly in-depth reviews and even more new worlds of horror movies opening up to me. These videos are yearly traditions for me now, and though Rolfe has slowed down the series in recent years, it still lives on in his unending passion for a genre he has loved and dedicated himself to his whole life and still permeates nearly every project he does to this day.

58. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (19 points)
Nominated by: JONALEON1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdNpFoWrBDQ

Importance: 5
Fear: 4
Snake: 10

I still remember to this day how much I laughed my ass off watching this movie. I think it's one of the most effective tear-down satires of the horror and slasher genres of all time. It's a true comedy-of-errors, referring constantly to the fact that just because two hillbillies are living at a cabin in the woods and seem a little off, doesn't mean that they are automatically horror movie slashers. This film features the finest performances of both Alan Tudyk's and Tyler Labine's careers in my book, as their characters become increasingly frustrated, exasperated, and scared while the ignorant college students seemingly start offing themselves on their land. There's a clever role-reversal scenario later in the film that's beautifully executed as well. Like the best horror farces, Tucker & Dale also isn't afraid to retain its fearful roots and also lots of gore, so you're laughing will also being disgusted. It's rare nowadays to see a comedy this well-timed and measured, with no actor crossing the limits of camp or over-exaggeration that can sometimes plague certain satires. As a horror fan, this film is pleasing, thrilling, and gives the genre the kick in the balls it needs sometimes.

57. Dnepropetrovsk maniacs (19.5 points)
Nominated by: Corrik
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dnepropetrovsk_maniacs

Importance: 7.5
Fear: 9
Snake: 3

What a sickening group of individuals. With 21 lives taken by this pair of maniacs (along with a 3rd conspirator who was only convicted of robbery), it's incredible to me how someone could turn so evil as this and it also makes me sad that they turned out the way they did. The pair rose to another level of infamy when a video now known as "3 Guys 1 Hammer" shown them beating an innocent man with hammer whilst riding his bike to see his grandchild. The video is extremely graphic and not for the faint of heart and I'd rather not even describe it anymore. There's some added nuance to the case however, especially when Viktor Sayenko's father Igor represented him in his legal case. Igor tried claiming that the real killer was being covered-up and his son and friend were wrongly accused, which actually got some backing. The video was even thought to be faked. Both men were found guilty and got life sentences but their parents still defend their names to this day. The third conspirator only got 9 years for robbery. Anyway you slice it, it was a sick event and an unnecessary loss of human life.

To get 1st you gotta have high marks in all categories. The video itself is definitely sick and could easily get 1st based on fear ranking alone. But, the nomination is also for the Maniacs as a whole and not just the video, and to me there's still some human element in there for them, part of me that makes me feel bad for them and wish things had turned out different as I said.

This will not be a manga you read for some fun escapism or humorous adventure. It's a labyrinth of the worst of humanity, a Lynchian-story told non-linearly across different timelines but also connected to one thing: the butterfly. I won't claim I understand it completely and it will definitely take several readings to truly take it all in. Mainly, it follows a girl named Arie, who probably has the most unfortunate life of all time, and is portrayed in different manners throughout the story, and to me she's meant to be less a consistent character than she's an allegory for the exploring acts of rape, murder, sacrifice, and other equally vile things. It's a whole bunch of stuff that will make you sick to your stomach and have you thinking for days. Arie's path touches many different characters over the course of the story in profound and hopeless ways where the only salvation comes from giving up. The artwork is beautiful in contrast to the story and helps carry a large portion of the story just be conveying emotion so well. Nijigahara ultimately portrays a horror story where the monster is all of us, and it is us and our dark desires that we most need to survive and defend ourselves from.

The story in most of its incarnations will usually involve a young girl home alone with a maniac on the loose, kept awake by the sound of something dripping off in the distance. She reaches down under her bed to be licked by her dog for comfort and falls asleep. However, she wakes up in the morning to find her dog dead and dripping blood in the bathroom, with a message "Humans can lick too!". Cue horrifying realization. It's the ol' monster-under-the-bed thing retold. We're always at our most vulnerable when we sleep, which is why we all experience that terror of being home alone at one point or another, hearing strange noises in the distance, and we all have something to rely on to make us feel more comfortable. The Licked Hand corrupts that notion of safety and laughs at the thought of having a good night's sleep again. This story proves that the most effective horror stories can come from the most simplistic places.

"Scary For Kids" uhhhhhhh this is not a kid's story, wtf. I mean I guess they toned it down to try to make it one, but that's kind of lame.

54. Lore (podcast) (19.5 points)
Nominated by: Bane_of_Despair
http://www.lorepodcast.com/episodes

Importance: 5.5
Fear: 6
Snake: 8

Lore's main tagline is "Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction" and there's never been a more apt description. For over 70 episodes, our humble narrator of these fine tales, Aaron Mahnke, has described, chronicled, and recounted the legendary folklore tales of old, both well-known and obscure, the stories that still hold real meaning to us today. Things like the creation of the vampire, the rise of doppelganger sightings, and the birth of myths like goblins and gremlins are all lovingly told and well-researched, making each episode both informative and the perfect spine-chilling way to end any night in a subtly creepy fashion. I've made my way through several episodes over the past month, and they're incredibly addicting as well as being a perfect 20-minute length; the episodes are generally bi-weekly, with the exception of weekly episodes in October so that's plenty of horror to wet your whistle at any time. It's also been turned into an Amazon Prime original series which translates the podcast episodes into 40-minute live-action episodes and I think it's really well done.

53. The Baker Family (Resident Evil 7 / Game) (19.5 points)

Importance: 3
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 9

Here's a challenge: create a modern survival horror villain that matches the visceral horror of being chased by Nemesis, Pyramid Head, or the Scissorman. And none of that insta-kill jump scare BS either! Well, Capcom delivered in spades with the Baker Family, a Texas Chainsaw-esque sadistic family living in pure squalor and guess what, you're trapped in there with them all! In the first true survival horror Resident Evil experience in over a decade, The Baker Family reminds you what it's like to be constant edge again. The patriarch of the family, Jack Baker, roams the halls of his once beautiful mansion, bursting through drywall and just about ready to cut off some limbs with his shovel while still acting in a somewhat fatherly manner. Then there's Marguerite, the mother, easily the most straight-up disgusting off the bunch, able to produce and control mutant insects; she's still motherly as well, although her idea of a family dinner may not quite remind you of "just how mom used to make". Third, there's Lucas Baker, a gifted inventor and psychopath who places his victims in Saw-like games which are of course rigged in his favor. Finally, there's the mysterious grandma, who shows up in unexpected places but only watches in a somewhat comatose state. There is actually one more member of the family, Zoe, who isn't like her parents, at least not anymore.

With the Bakers, Capcom was able to design a group of villains who couldn't just be defeated by draining your ammo reserves. They are ever-present and all present unique challenges for the player to overcome, with challenging boss fights that feel satisfying to defeat because you spend so much time with the family members that you really start to get personal to their well-fleshed personalities, you grow increasingly fearful of them and hate their guts, with the first-person perspective getting you even closer to the horror. Yet, when it's revealed later that the family was infected by a young girl they took in named Eveline and they used to be a normal family, the whole situation is recontextualized for the player. I think the Bakers will stick in players minds for a long time, and rank up high as some of the best survival horror villains ever created.

I haven't looked this up, but I read the reason RE7's story works is that Capcom hired a professional writer to do it for them.

Yeah, they got Richard Pearsey who helped write Spec Ops: The Line, one of the strongest video game narratives ever in my opinion.

Man I'm not a big Resident Evil fan (4 was solid but the others I played or saw played haven't thrilled me) but that sounds really good

Would you recommended RE7 to a non-RE fan?

It's difficult, because RE7 was made specifically for the RE fan. However, while it's every close to the old games in terms of gameplay structure, I think it's still fundamentally different and can be enjoyed by anybody even if you don't dig the other games in the series. The new FPS-perspective does wonders to make it feel "the same, but different".

I mean I liked the demo. I don't know if I can play a whole game of that demo (I'm way too big a wimp when it comes to survival horror games, despite loving the lore behind them) but the first person view is intriguing

And while I never got into the gameplay of the Resident Evil games I still love Nemesis and Wesker as villains

52. This Is Halloween (19.5 points)
Nominated by: Shonen_Bat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpvdAJYvofI

Importance: 6.5
Fear: 4
Snake: 9

Last year, I called The Monster Mash the most famous Halloween song of all time, but I think This is Halloween holds the title as a close second. It's all about tone. Monster Mash is more for the Halloween party crowd, a joyous, upbeat trick-r-treat anthem to the classics of old, but This Is Halloween focuses on the dark side, the horror side of Halloween. It's kind of like The Monster Mash's edgy teenage years. Instead of Dracula and his son, we get "the one hiding under your bed". Instead of the Wolfman, we get "the shadow on the moon at night". These are more tangible and relatable fears and something we're most likely to be afraid of, but TIH also understands that "life is no fun without a good scare" and that fear comes more from a place of love than inherent nastiness. Horror teaches us lessons and caution, but these lessons come in form of a clown with a tearaway face and the one hiding under our stairs. So, This is Halloween is an excellent musical choice for the season of frights, a song that understands all the ingredients that make up a spooky, scary, and fun All Hallows Eve. Just don't come running to me if Skeleton Jack makes you jump out of your skin; it's his job after all.
