119. THEN WHO WAS PHONE? (4.5 points)
Nominated by: JONALEON1
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/then-who-was-phone

Importance: 2.5
Fear: 1
Snake: 1

THEN WHO WAS PHONE? was a minor internet meme a few years ago, a grammatically incorrect twist on the internet's favorite form of scary story telling, the creepypasta. Conceptually, I get the subversion here; the typical stinger designed to make everyone jump out of their chairs turned instead into a jarring punchline. However, the story that precedes it makes everything seem disingenuous. Even just a passing glance at the original story reveals that the whole thing isn't meant to be taken in that light. It's randomness for the sake of internet randomness. There's nothing inherently clever about it and it now wallows with the other ghosts of memes past.

118. Leprechaun Back 2 tha Hood (5 points)
Nominated by: BetrayedTangy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j67MZXY33c0

Importance: 2.5
Fear: 1.5
Snake: 1

Who the hell thought this film was a good idea? Before the film even starts it already has several problems: the Leprechaun was old after one film, the franchise continued AFTER it went to space with not one but TWO hood films, and lastly, who the hell even cared about Leprechaun at this point? The one thing I will commend this film for is Warwick Davis' committed performance; I honestly wouldn't have blamed him for phoning it in here, especially when everyone else around him is. I guess I would too if I had to play the most bland racial stereotypes around. The film fails at being entertaining, funny (it's not even bad enough to be good), and scary, with scene after scene of boring Leprechaun invincibility, corny non-jokes, and cringy slapstick. It was with good reason this franchise was put in the grave for a while after this. This is the worst of the worst.

117. Birdemic: Shock and Terror (7.5 points)
Nominated by: JONALEON1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-y53CRSF9Q

Importance: 4
Fear: 1
Snake: 2.5

Birdemic is easily the worst movie I've ever seen. Even complete pieces of crap like The Amazing Bulk, Survival Island, or even Manos don't compare to the epic failure of Birdemic: Shock and Terror. What's really shocking and terrifying is how little anyone cared about making this film. This film is fundamentally flawed on every level, from the worst audio quality to a stilted script read by high school play actors, to the laughable and repetitive CGI bird abominations that just awkwardly hover above the actors while they awkwardly swing hangers at them (neither party makes much progress). Like any bad movie though, there's a so-bad-its-good quality to some parts but they're few and far between honestly. Whereas something like The Room can keep you laughing your ass off throughout, Birdemic only really manages to capture laughter before its repetitive nature starts to set in. The birds are funny at first, until you realize that yes, they really do repeat the same damn shot and effect about 100 damn times in the film. The audio quality is funny for about a minute into the film. I think the funniest parts are the random tangents on global warming and nature preservation for being so out of place. I also love their car with the magical trunk of giving, it had fishing rods and a hot plate! So lucky!

There is very little plot structure or even any character development to speak of, although the first 50 or so minutes will have you fooled into thinking this is a romance film instead of a killer bird film. Jokes on you if you think any of that crap matters. In fact, jokes on you if you think anything in this film matters one bit. It's one of the most pointless, mind-boggling things, most horrible things I've ever seen. And of course I recommend everyone go see it for themselves!

Look, the Woman in the Painting (named Judith in the credits) isn't as bad as this ranking may suggest. I personally just find it a forgettable part of IT that I really didn't think much about. I didn't particularly like the CGI used to bring it to life and found it creepier as just a painting. Other than being used as Stan's main fear in a few parts, it's also not really a huge part of the film either. I'm happy other people are recognizing her as a memorable part of the film, but for me, she falls into a generic category and I won't be rewatching the film just for her.

This is a small Youtuber who makes episode reviews/summaries of the infamous 90s kids horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark? For a superfan of the series, you'll fit right at home with Beauch's videos; he's a very passionate fan himself, and describes the episodes with elements of other content creators' videos like the Nostalgia Critic but he does evolve his own humor over just a short time. His delivery is nice and he's a natural in front of the camera with very enjoyable inflections and reactions. I'm personally not that big a fan of the AYAOTD series besides a few stand-out episodes, so I didn't get too much out of these personally, but I see that he's a big fan and very passionate about his videos, so good on him!

huh, I thought you would have found "Judith" scarier tbh. Stephen King even said it "scared the shit out of him":

http://uproxx.com/movies/it-movie-stephen-king-scared/

The director, Andy Muschietti, also wrote and directed Mama, so you can quickly draw parallels between the visual style of the 'Mama' ghost and Judith. In fact, one Italian painter's series of human portraits is pretty much the basis for that elongated, hollow look. Here the director explains how seeing one such painting as a child had a lasting effect on him:

http://horrorfreaknews.com/spoilers-artist-inspired-terrifying-manifestation/20206

Just glancing at some of Modigliani's paintings yourself, you can easily see where the inspiration came from: http://tinyurl.com/yanuaeea

I love the initial reveal of Judith once she's escaped the painting - the shot of her from the neck down in the background, dropping the flute, as she's barely able to hold onto it with her unnaturally long, deformed fingers - it builds perfectly to her face reveal as we feel the same knowing horror that Stanley projects on-screen. I think it's an all-time great horror scene.

I like sugar cookies quite a bit, and I also like baking quite a bit. Not only that, but there's something about things like this that just scream Halloween spirit. I can just imagine making these on a dark and chilly night and setting down for a few horror movies. I like that aspect a lot. Though they're nothing more than cookies with pumpkins drawn on them, them and their brethren are an integral part of the Halloween experience.

While I played a little Destiny, I quickly got bored and never made it to the Taken King expansion pack. Oryx is your typical overpowered God-tier bad guy, born into the darkness and molded by it, before taking fashion tips from Shadow the Hedgehog's Black Doom. Honestly, Oryx is a little cliche in my eyes and his list of quotes don't do him many favors in that department. I feel like he's supposed to be a Lovecraftian entity, but I think there's a real lack of development here and a design failure that just completely flops in the horror department.

112. The Den (2013 film) (10 points)
Nominated by: Great_Paul
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2GirTaN1fY

Importance: 4
Fear: 3
Snake: 3

Released nearly three years before Unfriended (going by Russian release date), The Den follows the Unfriended theme of largely taking place on a computer screen, webcam footage, and bargain-bin site rip-offs (at least Unfriended had some authenticity to its ridiculous proceedings). The Den is also a movie you will watch and instantly forget about. I struggled to remember anything that happened in it until I read some plot summaries; a woman named Elizabeth is doing a graduate project for her sociology class, where she uses "The Den" (an analogue for Chatroulette) to record and accumulate meaningful conversations. Eventually, she comes across something that appears to be a snuff film, and what follows is a clichefest of useless police, hostile friends, and a horrible boring villain who might as well just be called The Slasher for how original he is. With some nuance, you can create something interesting out of this concept, but The Den was content in creating something forgettable and gimmicky instead, hoping to ride it out with its computer camera concept.

111. Carrie 2 ending scene (10.5 points)
Nominated by: v_charon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRTEVq8zEVw

Importance: 2.5
Fear: 3.5
Snake: 4.5

So, I actually don't mind The Rage: Carrie 2, a late 90s industrial-grunge update to the seminal classic. There's certainly some stuff to appreciate, like Amy Irving return to play Sue Snell and Emily Bergl's committed performance. And this scene, an enjoyable if not as emotionally powerful remake of the original Sissy Spacek prom rampage. Late 90s trappings like being killed with flying CDs are a little corny, but the fire poker through the peep hole is fun; even moments like a girl being trampled on and subsequently throwing up blood adds some horror to the situation. Still, it's definitely impossible not to compare this with the brilliance of the original, after all, it's the most memorable part of the Carrie franchise. When I watch this, I don't feel the pure rage oozing off the screen, the nuance hidden beneath the humiliated party as she hallucinates everyone laughing at her, I don't feel enthralled and magnetized by the carnage as Rachel offs friend and foe alike. Instead, it feels low budget like it is, and more of an enjoyable fun house of horrors than a cathartic and horrifying release of aggression. Taken for what it is, it's certainly amusing to watch. Just don't come looking for any depth here because you won't find it.

It was like the highlights of a monster movie played out over a few minutes, mixed in with surreal and black humor qualities, with the bunnies putting people into their bag-like arms and then blending them up which is a really unique visual. Not too much else to say, it's an enjoyable scene and it's over in flash.

109. Nostalgia Critics Top 11 Scariest Nostalgic Moments (11.5 points)
Nominated by: Great_Paul
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yUXHGNEEOg

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 5
Snake: 5

Hard to believe this video is almost 10 years old already, I remember watching it around the time it came out. The list contains mostly what you would expect from a childhood nostalgic scarefest for a kid growing up in the 80s/90s; the Wonka Tunnel, Wicked Witch of the West, Headless Horseman, Ghostbusters, though I will say the item that comes out on top is interesting since I hadn't heard of it before watching the video. The one item I don't agree with being scary is the Care Bears villain guy, it's pretty lame and only happens for a flash anyway. But otherwise, it's a solidly put together list and short enough to be a fun rundown of what scared the shit out of you as a kid.

108. As Nodt (Bleach) (12.5 points)

Importance: 2
Fear: 5
Snake: 5.5

As Nodt is a character whose main weapon is literally Fear. He carries thorns that can be shot at foes, bringing out their worst fears simply by being touched by them. One of my favorite aspects of As Nodt is his two transformation forms. One is like this stitched-up demon and it's really cool looking, while his latter one is largely deformed and horrifying. It's always interesting to me to see a being that runs on fear have their fears brought to; As Nodt is scared of hell and dying, as well as his leader Yhwach. He's a cool and interesting designed character and I like the horror he brings to the table.

107. Witch Labyrinths (Madoka Magica) (12.5 points)
Nominated by: PrinceKaro

Importance: 2
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 6

From what I gather, the Witch Labyrinths of Madoka Magica are projections of a witch's emotional and mental state and often change the deeper you go in. I really like the unique visual style of the labyrinths, often using a collage papier-mch style mixed in with surrealist art forms, with slight variations for each witch. They separate themselves nicely from the main animation of the series and are often hellish journeys full of creative imagery but they can also sometimes be bright and colorful with some things just slightly off. I could always see myself looking forward to these and I love the creativeness, the terror, and the emotional depth they bring to the genre.

Yeah, I love the stylish approach to the witches.

And (Madoka spoilers about the nature of the witches), witches are 'corrupted' magical girls, so their dungeons also reveal their past, personality, and even hobbies.

106. Sinister (movie) (13 points)
Nominated by: Corrik
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to2A1ycR40Q

Importance: 5.5
Fear: 4
Snake: 3.5

Everybody seems to love this movie, but I find it to be one of the weakest, most overrated horror films of the past decade. The scares are really unoriginal and reliant on jumps, which is usually a big fat no for me. It tries to do some psychological things with the children, and every time we might be getting something actually scary, Bagul the Boogeyman has to remind us that we're supposed to be scared with a loud banging noise. Ethan Hawke brings a really overacted performance to the table, I swear every time he gets scared in this movie it looks he's about to literally jump out of his skin no matter the situation. Mostly though, Sinister has a boring plot, and I've seen it a million times before; Sinister is at its core an excuse to continue the boring jumpscare horror movie trend.

105. Boys of Silence (Bioshock Infinite) (13 points)

"NO SIN EVADES HIS GAZE"

The Boys of Silence I think are one of the creepier aspects to come out of the BioShock series. Taken from a young age, these children are forced to become these abominations, padlocked into insane metal helmets with no choice but to serve Comstock. They act as watchmen for the Comstock House, and will sound a loud scream if Booker crosses their light, which acts as their sight, summoning hordes of lunatics to fight the player. The Boys themselves are invincible and will disappear once summoning the lunatics. One of the best uses of the Boys is after opening a security gate to get to Elizabeth; one appears right behind you, a rare pure visceral scare moment for the series, keeping you reminded of that quote above.

Aw man I had one drop below 100

Also I liked Sinister. Not the best horror ever but certainly better than other modern fodder like Paranormal Activity and such

104. Petscop (Webseries) (13.5 points)
Nominated by: ihatethiscpu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e6RK8o1fcs

Importance: 3.5
Fear: 6.5
Snake: 4.5

A few months back, Petscop was the latest big Creepypasta game making the waves on the internet. I remember watching the first few released episodes all at once with intense intrigue, though some future developments made me lose a little interest (more on that in a second). Petscop is apparently an unreleased and forgotten PS1 game, a sort of puzzle-platformer monster collector, kind of like Pokemon in a sense. While the game starts off pretty innocently, in a zone with bright colors and cute monsters, things get dark fast when an underground area shows up, revealing scary mysteries and clues relating to missing children. One of the weirdest things about the game is the narrator/player of the game itself, named Paul. He seems generally unfazed about the events that unfold in the game and definitely knows more than he lets on. The series definitely requires repeat viewings especially in the later episodes, because I found myself becoming lost to what things meant, definitely not aided by a lack of narration and blacked out sections in the later episodes. It also hasn't been updated in a few months for unknown reasons. Some of the theories surrounding the game bring the most fear out of it, including the real-life case of Candace Newmaker, which the game makes reference to repeatedly. Anyway, it's an interesting series if you're willing to dive deep into it and I'd love to get back to it if it ever starts up again, with maybe some improved and less obtuse storytelling here and there.
