If it's a Christian Bible study, it makes sense since they believe much of it to hold some degree of accuracy. At the same time, many of the scholars and critics of the Bible are Christians. I recently has a Bible study with some Christians and atheists. Maybe it's because we were all English majors, but it was an insightful meeting.

If one wants to understand the Western world, one must have some knowledge of the Bible. Even if you don't believe in God, it will do you well to be familiar with it for things like literature and movies and games. Our laws today have heavy basis in the Bible as well (mainly from laws that came beforehand but still).

It sounds like you went to a poor study, though. As a Christian, you should've gotten out while you could.

The Bible is a brilliant piece of writing (some parts much better than others; go to hell, Deuteronomy), but it's clearly been tampered with and some of it is clearly not meant literally. Early Church fathers, for example, could tell that some books from the New Testament were forged, as in they were not written by the person they claimed to be (usually pretending to be Paul). For metaphorical stuff, you'll notice many uses of certain numbers (such as 40 or 13), which, at some point, becomes into this arching thematic across many early stories. Revelations was intensely debated before being included in the New Testament, and people had interpretations even back then.

The Bible isn't just one book. It's a collection of books, and each book has its own purpose. People recognized that even back then. And how many books are going to go and say "this is metaphorical"?

So, I'm from Texas... You basically won't have much luck explaining that to people who live here. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying the way I grew up, the bible was 1 book, it was the absolute truth, and if you tried to take something "metaphorically" you were basically chastised for trying to change the word of God.

Listen, I'm not an indoctrinated Christian. That is to say, I've not been raised on it. I'm actually a recent convert to Christianity. But these kinds of things have been pointed out a long time ago. Here, let me show you one incident of tampering found in the Old Testament:

When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.

2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, 3 and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go 4 and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

5 “Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet. 6 Deal with him according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.

1 Kings 2:1-6

The bold is the area that has been tampered. More precisely, it's been included in the passage. But how do we know? Besides the strange pattern of speech that David begins to speak in (he's never spoken in this manner throughout all of Samuel), it's talking about things that never have been brought up become in the preceding Samuel stories where David appears. You'll notice here, if you're familiar with the Bible, may turns of phrases that are consistent with the Deuteronomy and its writings in other books linked with its teachings. Stylistically, it's also very different from the rest of David's story.

There are other historical reasons that can show why it was included, but I'm not too familiar with them. I think the Dueteronomist writers are later than the writers of this story.

The Bible is not one book. How could it be one book? The first five books are attributed to Moses and then later books are attributed to others. Samuel and Psalms are by David iirc. I mean, Paul and the apostles are credited with different things even. It's obviously not one book.
