For my woman. I'm 28 and from the US. I've been in a 4 year long distance relationship with this lady (it's been really tough) Shes visited the US 3 times and ive visited her 2. I tried everything in my power to convince her to move to the US but she does not want to because of our Health care system among other things. So I have caved in and have decided to move to Germany for her also because I feel I owe it to her for putting up with me for all of this time. I don't speak a lick of German I don't know what im going to do for a job over there but im going to give it my all to make it over there. You guys have any advice??

Ive applied for an extended stay visa from the consulate's here in the US months ago and just barely got a call last week from the lady asking me if im still interested in persuing it. I said yes ofcourse and she just told me that I have to go to the local aliens office over there to get it.

Right now im also trying to put a cv together to able to apply for jobs.

Can't speak the language and no job prospects, a brilliant plan if I ever saw one. Hope your job skills are marketable at least and you have a decent chunk of savings. Should also be learning as much German as you can in these two weeks. This plan of yours smells like disaster though.

To be fair, Germany and Switzerland are one of the few places where you can move there and just speak English, there's a bunch of people who speak it anyway.

You should give some amount of effort in learning the language though.

Been a really rocky one i'm not gonna lie we've been on and off a couple of times. But we love each other we just somehow keep coming back to each other. So I have to do this to see if it can work out for the long run.

She's a really headstrong person she loves her home, she doesn't want to leave it and she's not a big fan of how our country does some things. It's nuts I know I said the same thing why date someone from the country that you don't like or don't want to move to. But it happened.

What exactly are your qualifications/job skills? Because your lack of German proficiency will hugely matter depending on what field you wanna work in. I work for a tech company in Munich, and everyone there speaks excellent English, but good luck getting by without speaking German in more menial jobs.

It's also gonna make a large difference which city you move to - Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt are great for people who aren't really familiar with the language, but your experience is gonna be vastly different in smaller cities or more rural areas.

Good luck. Not being able to speak German isn't a big deal. My good friend doesn't but travels there frequently for business. You should also consider looking for US based jobs that need people in Germany.

All the people telling "this is dumb" are afraid of change and don't like leaving their comfort zones.

Get your CV in immaculate order and start using Duolingo. Have contingency plans in order just in case shit goes south (again) with your partner. Don't frame it as much as moving for/to her... Plan this move for you and what you'd need to have in place to live there.

Download the Duolingo app on your phone. It does a decent job of teaching you the basics. German is really similar to English so it shouldn't be too hard if you try and immerse yourself and try to only speak German.

Are you a military aged Middle-Eastern man who they advertise as "women and orphans"? To the point where the German government evicted property owners from their own homes, to house these people? And to the point where Angela Merkel, in a sheer display of brilliance, against the wishes of the majority of Germans, is importing even more?

My cousin lived in Germany for 2 years and never had a problem with the language. Granted, she lived on a military base, but she still managed.

I am sure if I asked I probably know more German then she does, and I only know the stuff my mother taught me (which is all of 5 words).

Dude, you are going to get turned around once you get off the plane. I hate to say it, only have $600 in your pocket, you can't legally work over there. All you applied for is an extended stay visa, that only allows you to stay and travel, not work. Plus $600 doesnt go far in Europe, so yeah I hate to be the one breaking this to you.

You're going to blow the last tiny bit of money you have on this. Please get as much of a refund for your plane ticket as you can and don't do this. I know it sounds hard to break off a four-year relationship, but it's better than wasting even more time on it. Know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em. It's time to fold before you go bust.

As for not having anything here, yes you do. I'm sure you do, and you'll see that once you get your head clear of this idea.

Well I know in the states there are protections for people who come over from foreign counties and end up in abusive or unstable relationships later down the road without having anything to fall back on. Those typically deal with marriages though, not something like this.

Plus I have no idea how the court system in Germany works.
