Using my flex day off to pack up the apartment and purge my shit. It'd probably go faster if I stopped taking Netflix breaks, but it's going. Can't wait to move into a room no one else has lived in that has A/C, a dishwasher and in-unit washer/dryer :D

Sub-topic: once I get settled in I'm looking into adopting a cat! I've never been a cat parent, so I'm looking at adults at least one year old. Any new cat owner tips, especially for a 1-bedroom apartment would be appreciated.

Here's a new cat owner tip: Get one that you can take back for a refund if you aren't happy.
(I only base this off how much my bro yells at one of his cats)

Yeah I've read up on setting up safe rooms, or perhaps a screened off corner of a room, for them to adapt to. I'm going to likely adopt from a local organization that utilizes foster homes; they make sure their cats are fully vetted and some are already home trained.

Here's my cat tip: get two. Cats do better with other cats. They're less work and they'll be happier when you're away, even in a small space.

And get lots of good window views for them. Put a cat tree under or near a window. They love watching outside.

Most cats teach themselves to use a litter box without issue. They're not dumb. When introducing a cat to a new home you should start them by the litter box and allow the cat to wander from there.

Cats that don't use litter consistently usually have medical issues, or behaviour problems. Or the litter box is not being kept clean enough for that cat. Some cats can only use it once before they start finding other places to soil.

Yeah I read about that, but I'm not sure I could handle that both cost-wise and time-wise in the immediate. It sounds like that's definitely appropriate for kittens and young ones, so I think I'm going to aim for older adults who can live alone.

yup.

i put my cat in a litter box when he got old enough, and he instantly took a dump and covered it then walked out all proud. and he always used the box from then on

his mom was still sick at that point and kept elsewhere so he didn't have anyone to watch for himself

There's often pairs of adult cats that shelters are trying to adopt together. I know we've had several this year. They're already bonded.

Time wise they'll take less of your time with two. More costs though. You have a dog and some cats take well to having a dog for their friend.

Shelters also often have solo adult cats that they want to adopt as the only cat in a home. So if you must have only one cat going that way is a good bet.

But really... Two kitties best kitties when possible :3

Despite what people will insist, having a cat in an apartment is really dirty. The room that the litter box is in will always smell like litter - it doesn't matter how clean you keep it, brand new litter out of the box has an odor in order to cover up the odor of cat feces. Or you could get unscented litter, and after the first dookie boom your house smells like cat crap until you take it outside. Plus there will always be small bits of litter on the floor that the cat tracks out of the box with it, and most cats spray litter everywhere digging in the box. You will either have to sweep 3x a day, or wear shoes inside, or be fine with your socks / feet being dirty as hell all the time.

If you have a small yard or garage or something like that you can have an outdoor sand box or litter box and then it's completely a non issue. In that case cats are clean animals. A cat that poops and pees in your house will always make your house dirtier than a dog that does both outside your house, regardless of what cat people will tell you.

I personally find indoor litter boxes disgusting, they should always be in a garage, covered outside area, etc. If I was unable to provide that, I would never consider getting a cat - a small dog would be much better suited in that case.

Yeeeah this is a big concern for me honestly. I've smelled how rank my friend's apartment can get when she doesn't keep the liter box cleaned daily. And the eventual dander will get everywhere.

sigh, it's a risk I'll have to take I suppose.

Good luck with your new place, just thought I'd share my personal warning on it. I dated a girl who lived in a small appt and the litter box was in her bedroom, the smell drove me absolutely crazy and there was always tiny pieces of litter on the bedspread. It really changed the way I saw her to be honest, even though it seems wrong it just made me think of her as a dirty person. It was kind of like a Seinfeld thing, where some minor thing like man hands or being a low talker was the deal breaker. We weren't right for each other anyway.

If you do end up going for a cat rest assured that they're very easy to take care of. Don't take cat message boards too seriously, most of those people are very alarmist and will send you running to the vet for $1,200 worth of diagnostic blood work over the most minor things.

Just make sure they're neutered/spayed, it really makes their behavior a lot better. I suppose any cat from a shelter comes that way, I've never gotten one from a shelter.

oh, you absolutely can. but when you leave for several hours and then come back, your nose resets so you can smell everything. i've been in both situations, where someones house is just rank af and they have one cat. likewise i've seen peoples houses have seemingly no smell with multiple cats. i'm in the latter situation.

get a covered litter box, clean it daily for multiple cats, or once every day or two for multiple cats.

get clumping litter, seriously, no matter how cheap non-clumping is, don't fucking get it.

that's it.

if you're worried about the cat tracking litter when it walks out, put a cheap rug or something down in front of the box.

after a while, cleaning the box just becomes routine. takes like 30 seconds to do anyways. i do it in the mornings when i'm waiting for coffee to brew.

I live on a horse ranch. I can't smell manure at all, but anyone who comes by for the first time always says "it smells like horse s***". If you work in a laundromat you won't smell detergent. When I worked at a nursery I only smelled the soil right when I got to work in the morning, after that didn't notice it at all.

If you can't smell it, that's cool for you. I've tried many different types of litter, and the only ones I can't smell when they're just sitting there are the unscented ones. But once the cat takes a dump in unscented litter, you can smell that for a while until it dries enough to not stink - like 15-20 mins. It's really appetizing when your cat takes a dump right as you're sitting down to eat dinner, but it's 100 degrees outside and you have the windows buttoned tight and the AC blasting. You get to choose, cool and poopy, or hot and fresh?

Bedroom, not bathroom. At the end I started requesting she put the box in the bathroom and close the door when I came over, lol. I've tried having an indoor cat myself, and I just couldn't stand it. Other people are fine with it, and that's cool. Everyone told me how clean cats were, so I got an indoor cat, and I just couldn't stand the cleanliness aspect. No one told me any of the things I'm telling you, and I really wish someone had. I like my house extremely clean, and I was not ok with cleaning for 45 minutes every single day to keep it at my standards. Now I'm back to my 2 hours of cleaning once a week and much happier with that.

My friend has cats in a small apartment and its awful. He doesnt notice the smell anymore but its there. He got a self cleaning one but one of his cats wouldnt use it, and that cat seems picky about the type of litter too. He has also seemed to have gotten allergies from it as well. Also, he keeps the box in a storage room and it still smells.

Other than that, the cats are the best cats. I have never met cats that I liked as much as his. But the litter is a big issue that I feel cat lovers under state.

The horse manure I never smell, even after I've been gone on vacation and come home. I'm permanently nose blind to that smell. Something like the soil, where I only worked there a few months, I was only temporarily nose blind to - I would smell it for a minute every morning when returning to work. I can say I've never been to a cat house and not been able to smell the litter box from at least a room away. Like I said, I can smell a box of brand new scented litter from the next room from experience.

I don't care if you get a cat or not OP, I love cats they're wonderful animals and great companions. I was never given the information I'm telling you and I ended up really hating having an indoor cat, even though I loved the cat herself. I transitioned her to an outside life and she is very happy and healthy, she still greets me every day. For me, my dog is my indoor companion and my cats stay outside. For some people having indoor cats is great. Different strokes for different folks.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do, I'll see myself out now. I'm really not trying to debate anything, just offering my experiences.

I hated it, it felt like I was constantly breathing it in when I showered and went to the bathroom.

When my cat poops in the other room I can smell it if it's a nasty one. You should be scooping daily anyway. Get something to store litter in and dispose of it when it's trash time like normal.

i just scoop into a double walmart bag and take it to the trash cans outside

obviously that method probably wouldn't work if you lived in an apartment

I think this building has trash chutes and shit, so it wouldn't have to stew.
