Good luck with your new place, just thought I'd share my personal warning on it. I dated a girl who lived in a small appt and the litter box was in her bedroom, the smell drove me absolutely crazy and there was always tiny pieces of litter on the bedspread. It really changed the way I saw her to be honest, even though it seems wrong it just made me think of her as a dirty person. It was kind of like a Seinfeld thing, where some minor thing like man hands or being a low talker was the deal breaker. We weren't right for each other anyway.

If you do end up going for a cat rest assured that they're very easy to take care of. Don't take cat message boards too seriously, most of those people are very alarmist and will send you running to the vet for $1,200 worth of diagnostic blood work over the most minor things.

Just make sure they're neutered/spayed, it really makes their behavior a lot better. I suppose any cat from a shelter comes that way, I've never gotten one from a shelter.
