Here's my cat tip: get two. Cats do better with other cats. They're less work and they'll be happier when you're away, even in a small space.

And get lots of good window views for them. Put a cat tree under or near a window. They love watching outside.

Most cats teach themselves to use a litter box without issue. They're not dumb. When introducing a cat to a new home you should start them by the litter box and allow the cat to wander from there.

Cats that don't use litter consistently usually have medical issues, or behaviour problems. Or the litter box is not being kept clean enough for that cat. Some cats can only use it once before they start finding other places to soil.
