A game should be forgettable so that you have a reason to make this topic.

If remembering it ruins replayability, it wasn't replayable in the first place.

Sure, plenty of forgettable games are "safe", and I think there are excuses to be safe. If you have a fickle fanbase that is upset by games that go outside the box a bit, it's understandable why a developer would play it safe after a polarizing entry.

So yeah, I'd say there's an excuse in the most literal sense, but is that what you're really asking? Or are you asking if there is a silver lining to being forgettable? Because that I'm not so sure about.

More like can a developer justify not making their game something special.

So, yeah, I guess "safe but unremarkable" would be the best descriptor.

You could argue on vanilla Blizzard games being forgettable because the expansions add enough content and are reasonably priced enough that everyone forgets about them once the expansions are released. I know that happened with Starcraft and Diablo 2 and 3.

Yes, for the last decade.

In any popular medium, the most profitable method is pumping out shit cheaply and often at maximum price.

Better than being remembered as a bad game.

That's really the core of this argument.

I feel like mediocre works are savaged more than outright bad things.

Yes, if a game doesn't have an excessive budget, can't attract real talent, deals with creative constraints, etc, there are a lot of perfectly good reasons for it to be forgettable. And, in general, given that so many games come out in a given year, even relatively good games can be forgotten because better ones exist.

Well, at least some outright bad things can have unintentional/ironic value.

I wouldn't really say games need excuses to be forgettable. It just kind of happens as a result of failing to be memorable, and isn't something anyone really needs to justify.
