So in the whirlwind that has been my life for the last few years I've essentially lost all means of playing any music I own as well as losing a ton of that music as well. I have roughly 300GB of music on an external hard drive. I do not really have a "home computer" that I would want to transfer all this music to but I would like to put together some type of system where I can play this music in my house, likely via a bluetooth speaker.

What is the best means of making this happen? I do not own any type of MP3 playing device (ipod, zune (is zune still a thing), etc), nor do i have the bluetooth speaker system yet.)

I do have an Amazon Prime Music account but none of this music that i own has been loaded into it, i'm not sure how much Amazon would let me upload before charging me cloud storage space.

Have at it, B8.

ah ok. for what it's worth i found the process of uploading my missing music to amazon prime really simple, but in the end i preferred and stuck with spotify. thinking about it it definitely seems like if you already have all the music on an external hd there's a much more elegant solution

If I were to get a super cheap comp strictly for the purpose of playing music, would I be able to send said computer to a bluetooth portable speaker system in the house? What "program" would I need to process the music for playing? Old Computer which is now very much dead (dropped it during the move and well, yeah) had Itunes on it and that was the main method of playing music but really i'm not too interested in getting involved with them again. Would I just play through Amazon Music via the harddrive?

Some of these questions might sound very simple and stupid, but thats where we are right now.

Any music playing program should work, as long as it can read local files. Never used Amazon Music, so I can't say whether it does.

Setting the computer up to use the bluetooth speakers would be done through the OS (Windows probably) sound settings, and only requires you to have a bluetooth adapter in the computer. If you don't have one, you can get a usb adapter for like 15 dollars.

As an owner of an against iPod classic that now costs around $600 to replace, I also am highly interested in this.

Like how do I play music at the gym without using my phone once my iPod dies?

I have no answer to portability because I'm actually in the same boat as you, and like having a dedicated portable player. But SBell wasn't looking for a portable solution, so I didn't offer one

Why are options so limited on this.

It's like I don't care to use my phone for this. I'd much rather have a dedicated music player without any of the touch screen or Cloud related BS.

Surely there's enough of a market for it.

This is why I recommended a full computer. Something super cheap and dated will work here easily, and probably be cheaper than a standard mp3 player these days.

If you're feeling gutsy and have time to kill, you could go for something like a Raspberry Pi, too.

If you have a modern console not made by Nintendo, I'm pretty sure that you could use that for music. My PS3 seems to at least offer a method of connecting to an external hard drive to play mp3s, though I don't use it (my phone streams Spotify, which is good enough for me). As others mentioned, things like Amazon Echo and Google Home should also be able to play music, but I think they can only stream it.

Also, if your router has a USB port, you might be able to set up your external hard drive to be shared across your network and other devices can stream from that.
