I agree Kathy's photo was more distasteful and Donald's meme was funnier. That's probably why this passes, sure.

Still, Donald also has a history of inciting violence and we just saw a politician bodyslam a reporter before getting elected the next day. There's a callousness to his joke too that ain't appropriate for a President, especially in this environment.

Honestly that is the whole point behind Trump's attacks on the media. He doesnt want a free press and if he can't outright criminalize them he will do whatever he can to destroy his followers trust in them. So he calls them Fake News as much as possible while giving press passes to the sites that worship him. He steers his followers to sites that only cover him positively and makes them think any negative coverage must be a lie. What is really sad is how well it has worked.

In fairness we had the shooting with Republicans and the UPS driver who got murdered because somebody thought he was Trump. There's no need to lead a movement when it's just a revolt of some kind. Which is what both extreme ends find themselves in: leaderless camps who are angry, upset, or reject the other side.

I don't think either is a call to violence either, though Kathy's video was very dark and with some realism whereas Trump's tweet was as clear as joke can get and light. If we start throwing in actual violence, Kathy's head becomes trickier to defend simply due to what's actually happened and it's imagery, decapitated head ain't a badly edited wrestling gif.

but in the sense of that particular GIF being an attack or call to attack, no.

that one's just shitposting and gloating if you want something more concrete. gotta remember that the context here is that CNN was caught between Project Veritas establishing that some think the Russia story is fake and CNN themselves having to retract a Russian story because they couldn't prove it (see: it was fake). immediately after that for the first time in a long time, stories about Russia all but vanished on them and that itself became a story.

and the meme came after that.

Here's how he broke them -

#1 - Your audience is everyone on Twitter. If any sizable chunk of your audience goes up in arms, you've done a poor job conveying your joke.

#2 - The timing is what makes everyone go up in arms after earlier more pointed statements against CNN and other media sources. Therefore he broke the timing.

#3 - This fucking gif has been used for 20-plus months now and anyone who has a fucking computer has seen it before (sans the CNN logo). It's unoriginal. It's completely worthless as a joke now.

the gif is in its own little bubble because CNN was stupid enough to put it in one by attacking that particular thing and said it's a call to violence. which was stupid. they've got plenty of other examples and it would've been wiser for them to let that go but they instead doubled down and it's going to suck because they're giving him ground and destroying their arguments (i.e., mental health issues) at the same time.
