I mean, what's the centrist solution to abortion?

Keep it legal, give women taxpayer-funded birth control, but pay for an actual abortion yourself.

The only compromise we'll ever get on the subject is "abortion is legal, but you pay for it". The centrist part is letting women have birth control for free and removing the tax on feminine items (tampons, pads, etc). You can't be against abortion and birth control, but you get these crazy church people who are against both. Makes zero sense. Shouldn't you want birth control if you're against abortion?

Your kids are going to have sex. Get over it.

To put it this way: America generally doesn't care about being centrist, they care about solutions. They want things solved and that's why there's a pendulum in US politics. "There's a problem, the people in power aren't solving it, let's go with the other side" literally dictates voting mindset more than anything. If the Rust-Belt, despite all the "job killing regulations" being removed, doesn't recover to any significant degree, you can bet your ass they're gonna look long and hard at a Democrat's solution even if it's merely platitudes.

This is a recent thing with politics being a metronome. Our country functions better when we work together, and both sides are more and more insufferable these days.

I stopped watching infowars. They've gone total wingnut instead of being the guys who speak out against the power elite.

Uh, I mean 538 was getting s*** on almost universally by other outlets for giving Trump the MOST chance and after the election "538 is trash" was literally Ulti, the contest stats guy's, favorite talking point for weeks.

538 is useless leftist-biased nonsense. Anyone who takes that site seriously after the 2016 election deserves what they get.

Rasmussen and Investor's Business Daily are the best sources for finances and politics right now. They have been the most consistently accurate for almost 20 years, and were far and away the most accurate during the 2016 election season. They have earned the right to be taken more seriously than everyone else, especially if you're an investor like I am.

What part of "538 gave Trump the best odds" don't you get?

Has nothing to do with the slant of it. 538 is basically a left leaning site that is more realistic of what is actually going on. Most left leaners just let their bias funnel what they do.

I'm eyerolling pretty hard on the social media responses I've seen "oh this isn't so bad, it's a deep red district"

Yeah, I used to live there, and...no it's not really? Decatur boasted about having the second highest density of lesbians in the country:

http://www.decaturmetro.com/tag/lesbian-population/

And there seems to be some truth to this--the church I went to in Decatur was a lesbian church

I saw plenty of Obama 2008 bumper stickers when I was driving around (more than McCain honestly).

The general election this go around was 48% Trump to 47% Hillary in that district (actually closer than the special election tonight).

Don't get me wrong, I get that Dekalb isn't the entire district. Fulton county is part of the same congressional district, and it's a rich suburb that leans towards whatever candidate promises them low taxes. But when I heard the district might flip my reaction was "yeah, I wouldn't be surprised." Especially when I heard that Karen Handel had pissed off local Republicans.

Losing by 5 points is...honestly just bad. And the spin I'm seeing on twitter about how super duper red this district is, is seriously making me eyeroll. It's always had the potential to swing blue; it's part of Atlanta which is a big hub city, attracting educated people from all over the country, and LGBT people from all over south. (It's the richer whiter suburbs of Atlanta, but still Atlanta).

I'm sad that all I see Ulti do now is come into politics topics and troll. I used to appreciate his topics/posts so much. Makes me wonder what happened to make him so bitter and unhappy.

My posts in this topic are very happy and are basically the exact opposite of bitter. Please cite specific examples proving your point instead of putting out meaningless platitudes. I'm happy leftists lost yet another election and wasted 40 million more dollars. They went all-in in Georgia, in hopes that flipping the district would send a message to Trump. They lost bigly. Liberals were hoping they could flip a bunch of red districts, but after losing an election where they spent 40 million dollars, democrats are going to be reticent to run in these areas. What likely happens is the country sharply divides into red states vs blue states on the hill, and there are more red states than blue states. If dems couldn't flip this district, what will they flip? That isn't me being bitter, that's just pure analysis. I'm pretty good at analyzing things after the fact, you know ;)

I am not a bitter/unhappy person just because I don't go along with the radicalized SJW leftist garbage that Board 8's liberals go along with. I've been much happier since I stopped posting here, which is not a coincidence. This is an extremely toxic forum loaded with extremely toxic people. Just look at LTM's posting history for an amazing example.

We win elections. We win hearts and minds in the real world. That's all that matters.

Dude... all you do is come in here to post about how you were right about X thing and how all the leftists are idiots. All I see out of you is posts with an express purpose to rub stuff in people's faces/upset people that you dislike. That reeks of bitter unhappiness to me. That you're trying to make yourself feel like a winner despite all the people who tell you otherwise and who are against you in this topic.

I'm not saying other people don't post mean-spirited things either, but it's literally all I see out of you and it sucks when I respect your opinions on so many things. I understand you'll probably say I'm not showing specific examples and my opinion is incorrect/invalid because that's what you do when someone points out such things about you, and that's fine, but eh, I want you to know anyway that that's how I feel. (If you want specific examples, just look at nearly every post by you in this topic so far. You literally post a copy and paste sentence multiple times for what is obviously the express purpose of pissing people off.)

That said, these topics are quite toxic and are a serious echo chamber to an extent, but it doesn't help when almost every person with a differing view (aka, non left) seems to come in with hostilities at full steam, looking to insult/alienate every left leaning person in the topic.

Basically, if you find yourself posting how wrong "leftists" or "liberals" are, you're probably being a dick. On that same note, if you find yourself posting how wrong all right wingers are, you're probably being a dick too. I wish people could just post about politics without being at each others throats, but I guess it's a lost cause.

Thanks for most of that paragraph. What i been saying forever. What you fail to realize (outside of the idiots on the right) is that the actual differing views are called names or shouted down by said echo chamber. It is to the point of why even post here because all you are gonna get is accused of shit or shouted down by a chorus who does not want to actually rationally discuss said topics.

Good insight. It will be shouted down though because it does not jive with the narrative of what people wish to push. For example, Romney almost 5 years ago basically is a bigger predictor than the election almost a year ago. Go figure.

Tom Price has been in congress for over a decade, and often ran unopposed in the district; he could coast on name recognition alone by 2016, pretty sure. I'll give you Romney, I wasn't living in Georgia anymore by the time that election happened. (But then again, I didn't have a significant issue with Romney myself--he seemed like a respectable intelligent candidate--I mostly just felt that if Bush somehow got two terms, Obama whose first term had gone better than Bush's first term should really go two terms as well).

I mean make no mistake about it: it's not a good night. None of these non-wins are good nights because, well, they lost. And this being a bigger margin probably doesn't help, but they're definitely pushing hard against these red districts. The key is not getting demoralized and actually showing up proper for midterms.

I mean, yeah, it is noteworthy that most of these special elections are the result of...

Trump chose someone for cabinet who was currently in congress (like Tom Price from this district). Obviously he picks from districts the republicans don't think they'll lose, cause they don't want to lose seats.

It's still possible for dems to do well in 2018 despite losing...basically all of these special elections.

But yeah, this one in particular is a little bit personal for me, cause...hell, I still own property in that district (look Ma, I'm a landlord!) and the district felt like it had a lot of potential for flipping when I lived there.

But what can you do when a candidate says "I don't believe in a living wage" and still gets elected, or another candidate assaults a reporter and still gets elected? That's how red these places are, honestly. I think messaging didn't matter. Ossoff may have been a bad candidate but holy shit how can people see stuff like that and go "well I'm still ok with that."

I agree, but do you think online threats will ever be dulled?

People on my side of the issue really believe it can be, but are so often shouted down with pessimism like "it's the internet, death and rape threats are just what you'll always have to expect."

I don't think that's true. It's a long road, but change can happen. Despite their continued prevalence, I would guess there has been SOME slight level of decrease in the prevalence of homophobic slurs in online conversation in the last decade.

We are a perfect country that is exactly equal on all sides of the spectrum. 33.3~% Left, 33.3~% right, 33.3~% centrist.

If a 4th political option springs into being, a third of each of those thirds spontaneously joins the new party so we all become quarters.

Neither side is the majority.

This phrase is grammatically puzzling

I mean to clear it up, independents make up the majority.

Also neither side refers to the two parties in discussion, yet there can be multiple sides beyond just two.
