It is a well-researched op-ed. Includes state data, legislative cases, and personal narratives of then-girls who were pushed into marrying older men.

Those narratives... oh my. How can politicians not listen to young girls asking for a law to be repealed, while allowing them to marry? All of it is rather messed up.

Those reported numbers are low with many states providing no data. Including California, which seems to have no minimum age for marriage.

Not at all shocked that Idaho had the most relative to population.

In fact, more than 167,000 young people age 17 and under married in 38 states between 2000 and 2010...

What. The. Fuck.

I got married at 26 and I felt that was a little bit young. A fucking child should not be "allowed" to marry, because it's always going to be forced. Children cannot legally consent to all sorts of things. Why would we make marriage not one of those things?

anyone younger than 18 absolutely should not be allowed to marry. not only is it unethical, it's just...wrong.

why is 18 the number you have to hit to reach adulthood in the eyes of everyone, yet one of the most adult things you can do, marriage, can be done younger than that?

Interesting story, tbh. I really associate stuff like that more with Utah and wherever there are Mormons.

However, wtf at this:
“For almost all of them,” says Reiss, “marriage means rape on their wedding night and thereafter.” Reiss, now 42, says she was forced into a marriage at age 19 by her ultra-Orthodox Jewish family.

She was fucking 19. That's completely legal anywhere. Sure, you can argue that kids aren't fully cooked at 19 (and they aren't), but you have to draw a line somewhere and, while I could see giving a 19 y/o a lesser criminal sentence for a crime, this is a bit different.

I can kinda understand 16+ since 16 is the AoC throughout the developed world, but clearly there needs to be a cutoff there.

well, considering she thinks that any sex while married is rape, i don't think she's worth listening to

I think she was referring specifically to unwilling child brides or, at the very least, the concept of statutory rape when they're willing participants.

It requires parental consent if you are under 18. These mariages are all with parental consent.

One the one hand, if it weren't for this law, my grandparents would not have married (my grandmother was 15 and my grandfather was 20 when they married). On the other, you shouldn't be fucking marring off your 11 year old daughter.

Times were different then. Socially marrying off your 11 year old now is no good, but neither is letting your 15 year old be wed.

These days you can have children out of wedlock and not face the same stigma and ostracization that your grandparents would have faced.

No, my grandfather was being drafted into the Korean war and my grandmother needed to find a husband because her father dying and their farm was being foreclosed on. It is highly likely if she didn't get married before my grandfather went to Korea, she would have been homeless and probably died on the streets. She needed the support of my grandfathers family to even survive.

Where was this mentioned? At any rate, the ick factor isn't much different than 43 to 18 in general principle despite one being clearly legal and the other being selectively legal. Not that we should decide laws by what grosses or doesn't gross us out since, if we did, some people wouldn't be allowed to breed to at all.

No, a child is different from a legal adult, even if the 18 year old has more in common with a 13 year old than they do with a 43 year old. Both are gross imo.

But it is different with an 18 year old. Their relationship is legal because adults can consent to things. AoC doesn't matter as the only metric when you're talking marriage. It's a social contract--and minors can't agree to other contracts. A 13 year old can't drive, work, rent a place, or do anything to support themselves. It's essentially sending them off to be the property (or ward) of the adult in the marriage.

It's not a childish thing to have less hair, it's a feminine thing.
Dudes have more body hair than women. As a result, and in accordance with humanity's usual way of thinking, the ideal man has a shitton of body hair and the ideal woman has none.

It's just how we think. Pretty much any sexual dimorphism is idealized as its most extreme form. Huge tits, huge dick, tiny waist, broad shoulders etc etc.

*Tastes vary and people are different. Talking about archetypes, stereotypes, and trends here.

Women do have less hair--they typically don't have beards, chest hair, abdominal hair, or back hair. But armpit hair, leg hair, pubic hair... they're all there even if it's not as dense as on men.

A complete absence of hair is a lack of a secondary sex characteristic

That excerpt about the attempt to change the law in NH was...um. It was something.

In New Hampshire, a girl scout named Cassandra Levesque learned that girls in her state could marry at 13. So she set out to change the law.

A legislator sponsored Cassandra’s bill to raise the age to 18, and researchers found that two 15-year-olds had recently married in New Hampshire, along with one 13-year-old. But politicians resisted the initiative.

“We’re asking the Legislature to repeal a law that’s been on the books for over a century, that’s been working without difficulty, on the basis of a request from a minor doing a Girl Scout project,” scoffed one state representative, David Bates. In March the Republican-led House voted to kill the bill, leaving the minimum age at 13. (Legislators seem willing to marry off girls like Cassandra, but not to listen to them!)
