I know it's making big news about the spike in ransomware especially that big one, forget what it's called

My dad was hit once, but I have never been. I am usually careful with the sites I go to and what I download, even with my porn.

My mom got one that said

"YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN LOCKED BY THE FBI FOR LOOKING AT CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Sent $300 to us to unlock or else we'll show up and arrest you"

She was mad at me lol. I think I downloaded a tool to fix it.

Yes... got hit through my dorm's weak ass shit wi-fi proxies. Horrible network security, yet they forced their students to use it or we weren't given wi-fi access. I had a paper to submit and all of a sudden I was being told that my computer was on lockdown for distributing child pornography unless I paid $200. It was the FBI ransomware.

Unlocked my computer back by booting up Linux from a flash drive and running some anti-virus Ubuntu software for my hard drive.

I wrote a complaint letter to vent my frustrations of the applications they were using, and to be a total smart ass I attached my resume that emphasized my IT experience. (Why the fuck not, right? Hated washing dishes for $ at that school, but a guy's gotta eat.)

As expected, I never heard back from them, but my friend who was still there after I left said that they changed their wi-fi access/network security up a lot over that summer. To this day, I'd like to think that my letter worked to an extent.

Important files are on removable media that's only inserted as needed, so I don't really care.
Just wipe the drive and start over. Spend all day installing print drivers and ripping CDs again.

I wondered about that. Is infecting your hard drive the only thing ransomware can really do? Because in that case you should at least be able to fix your computer, and someone who knows what they're doing should be able to recover your data as well.

The recovery tends to be what the hard part is, because most ransomware encrypts the files that it is holding "ransom" and when you pay the ransom they essentially give you the decryption key. Hence why you should back everything up so that if something gets infected you can recover it.

I see. Yeah, you should keep backups regardless, hard drives break all the time too.

Way back when windows 98 was the OS of the day little me liked porn sites. I would frequently have to refresh the windows install because I didn't know how to deal with the many viruses I got into.

I got a similar one only I don't think it said anything about kiddie porn. I just paid a local PC company about 100 bucks to fix it. Luckily for me I don't keep anything important on my PC that I can't get back in a few hours.
