i got for honor because i need to stop playing overwatch and what better way to do that than replace it with another big multiplayer game! i hear the games-as-a-service model is working real well for ubisoft so i'm expecting a very healthy player base.

still though... nothing like carrying a team as hoodie tracer to win a 5v6 control map comp game

I was hyped for For Honor but it somehow seemed to end up as a worse Chivalry?

I got 25 hours deep in FFXV and I really liked it for like 23 hours but it just fizzled out quickly on me. It felt like it didn't want me to do anything at night and it wanted me to deal with dropships all day. Maybe that's a little dramatic.

I don't think night travel is prohibitive beyond the opening hours. It's not an issue once you level up enough to take out the Old Giants.

What kills FF15 for me is that there's never an incentive to poke at the mechanics of the game. The deepest reward is a checkmark. Open worlds should provide an incentive to explore, yet all you'll find in FF15 is rote sidequests to find frogs or dog tags. Hunts should allow the player an opportunity to explore the depth of combat, challenging the player to change up their tactics. In FF15, the majority of enemy encounters are the same; what works for the first group of enemies you fight works for a level 44 hunt. Even preparation is just a simple buff, the majority of meals only offering an increase in attack and HP. You find a higher tier of food that gives you a bigger buff that allows you to take on tougher enemies. The gameplay loop is too simple.

For some reason, I really like the actual body movement of the characters in combat. Maybe that's just me, I haven't played many big Western titles, so I don't know if Dragon Age/Horizon/Fallout 4 party members can move like this as well.

Really like the new Retronauts episode on Metroidvania origins. I wasn't feeling Retronauts East at first, but once Parish refreshed the line-up and added Chris Sims (an excellent podcast host who is on more podcasts that I listen to than anyone else, including the McElroys), the show has had an energy it lacked.

for the last couple years I'd say I listen to about 2 out of every 3 episodes. I think the quality has greatly improved over the last six months, which coincides with Parish and Mackey leaving USGamer to focus more on Retronauts and their other works. It's worked out really well for the show, giving them more time for brainstorming and research. The great episodes, the ones that balance entertainment, humour, and education, happen more frequently, so you get episodes like the ones on Batman, celebrity games, GameCentre CX, or the music/Retronauts Radio episodes. it's worth checking out again.

took 16 hours to finish route a of nier automata with some sidequests completed. i know people say it gets real interesting later, but yeah, that was a fairly bog standard open world action game with admittedly a decent number of weird, affecting moments. the a plot as it were had a pretty neat setup, but none of the big "emotional" beats later on really landed for me.

i like how route b starts though, and i'm looking forward to things ramping up eventually. hoping all that setup is worth it to go through the game for another... 6-8 hours??

also, fuck this stupid strict nat type bullshit with for honor goddamn i have never had to deal with any of this kind of shit playing multiplayer fuck gotta forward ports and shit goddamnit
