84. The Simpsons

Seen: At least the first 10 seasons or so, after that who knows, just a lot

Favorite character: Comic Book Guy

Hey, remember how I mentioned that Family Guy drastically went down in quality after the first few seasons? Thankfully, that didn't quite happen here. There was a quality drop, sure, but that was bound to happen with literally the longest running show of all time. Even at its worst though, Simpsons is still pretty decent. At its best, it's fantastic. It's sort of like Spongebob in the way that pretty much everyone has seen it and knows the best moments of the show. I've mostly stopped following the show, though I do still make sure to watch the annual Treehouse of Horrors every year.

83. Portlandia

Seen: All of it, so far

Favorite character: The Mayor

I feel like this show just kind of came out of nowhere. Before this, I had literally no reason to watch anything from IFC, but Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein make an excellent comedic pair. Some sketches are better than others, but overall the super-emphasized parodies of hipster culture, gender norms, commercials, and whatever else they feel like taking on are consistently funny, and it's impressive how distinct they make the characters despite the fact that they're all played by the same two people. But as good as Armisen and Brownstein are, the Mayor always stands out as the best.

82. Futurama

Seen: Almost all, aside from maybe a few episodes I've missed

Favorite character: Zapp Brannigan

So Futurama's sort of like the Simpsons, but I've always liked it just a bit more. The quality's a little more consistent, the side characters are a little funnier, and the subject matter is a little more focused and creative. The movies are all a lot of fun, even if they're essentially just extended episodes. It never really outstays its welcome, and it never really gets tiring seeing Professor Farnsworth insult everyone or Zoidberg be lovably pathetic. It's a show that's really easy to just throw on without commitment and still consistently enjoy it. And with this, we're finally getting into the shows I have POP figures of!

81. Gotham

Seen: First two seasons, like half of the 3rd

Favorite character: Oswald Cobblepot

Gotham is admittedly all over the place. The plots are kind of inconsistent and the writing isn't always the best. But when the show shines, it's one of the better superhero shows out there. Partially due to some incredible performances. Robin Lord Taylor (Penguin) dominates every moment he's on screen, and somehow made me care about Oswald Cobblepot, which literally no other piece of Batman media has been able to do. Likewise, Camren Bicondova as Catwoman (Catgirl?) and Sean Pertwee as Alfred were both incredible casting choices. And even when the show's plots are weak, the characters can still be so damn fun. I love watching Riddler being ridiculous and Harvey just kind of getting dragged along for the ride. I do need to catch up on it though; the third season lost me a bit.

80. Metalocalypse

Seen: A bunch, out of order

Favorite character: Charles Foster Offdensen

What a weird show. Somehow Brendan Small (the guy who made Home Movies) managed to also make an awesome comedy about an uber-violent death metal band. The names are ridiculous, the songs are riduclous, but I'll be the first to admit, I actually bought Dethklok's first two albums (and still swear by the fact that the Dethalbum is really good, especially for a fictional band). Dethklok is basically Tenacious D if they overdosed on testosterone and lost all sense of of self-awareness. Hyperviolence isn't exactly new to Adult Swim by any means, but no shows really brings it in a way quite like Metalocalypse, where the horror and brutality is half the fun. One scene might have them performing a massive concert where half their audience is brutally killed, whereas the next scene might have them quietly grocery shopping.

I haven't been able to get into Gotham, but I agree he's fantastic in that role. Easily the highlight of the show for me.

79. The Last Man on Earth

Seen: First two seasons, a little of the 3rd

Favorite character: Todd

I don't think any show has managed to have a main character as unlikeable as Phil (aka Tandy) was in the first season. It was frustrating watching him always seem like he was going to grow and redeem himself... only to do something awful. It was funny though, largely do to the very strong comedic presence of Will Forte and Kristen Schall. The two make a great pairing. Also, this is one of the few shows that really improves as it goes on. The first season was "ok," but was a little frustrating and repetitive. Once they got past their "new character of the week" trope and started making Phil a character who was actually remotely likeable (even if he still always fucked up) it really found its groove and was able to better explore the potential comedy of post-apocalyptic Earth.

78. How to Get Away with Murder

Seen: First 2.5 seasons

Favorite character: Asher

This kind of took the opposite path of Last Man on Earth. The longer the show went on, the more it fell into a repetitive formula. At first, that formula is really fucking cool though. As you go by episode to episode, you only get bits and pieces of the big "murder," very slowly trying to work out who was involved, what happened, and what the motivations were. And when you hit the midseason, GODDAMN is it satisfying to see it all play out. The second half then proceeds to deal with the fallout of the event, and then the next season starts over with a brand new mystery. While I have my issues with the show (everyone got over Rebecca WAY too quick and season 3's mystery is way too formulaic) but it has some excellent characters and myseteries, and is overall just a damn good show.

77. Master of None

Seen: Both seasons

Favorite character: Dev's dad

Keep in mind, when I ranked this show, I had only seen the first season. The second season gets considerably better, so really this should be higher. I've always liked Aziz Ansari. I liked his goofy standup and I liked him in comedy roles. But this is easily Ansari's best performance in... anything, really. It's easy to think of this as "Louie but with Aziz Ansari" and honestly it's not a bad comparison. It balances dry comedy and drama really well, and the better episodes (in particular, the first two of season 2) really show just how unique and well made this show is.

76. Saturday Night Live

Seen: man who knows

Favorite character: Burt Reynolds

Favorite cast member: Kate McKinnon

Where to even start with this show. It's older than I am by quite a bit, and it's STILL FUCKING RUNNING. I'll admit, I've watched a lot more modern SNL than classic, especially over the last few years. It's really kind of amazing how much of an impact this show has had on American culture, singlehandedly. Like half of the major comedic actors working today started with SNL, and the rest have appeared on it at least once. Over the last 2-3 years, I've taken up the habit of watching all the sketches on YouTube (bless SNL for making all the sketches so easily available online). Everyone knows the classics (more cowbell still quite possibly the best of all time, though Celebrity Jeapordy is up there) but the modern ones are definitely solid too. Some of my favorites of the recent seasons:
