Yeah I tend to not do this with meat or dairy. It's too much of a risk.

isn't this common sense with generally everything, meats, poultry, dairy, and seafood even moreso?

Common sense actually isn't that common I find.

I usually buy a steak that is like one or two days away from the sell by date, simply because I cook it that day and steak usually takes a while to go bad even compared to those dates. Plus the store always lowers the price so I can get a ribeye for like $8 a pound instead of $12.

I would NEVER do that with seafood though, that is a recipe for food poisoning.

Got into an argument at dinner tonight.

The fish smelled of heavy ammonia and hit me right in the nose.

I'll occasionally buy managers-special chicken (ie, close to sell-by) but I don't take a risk on fish, which is probably more just a psychological thing than anything particularly because sell-by dates are fairly rough estimates which generally err on the conservative side.

Yea, don't fuck with meat once the smell changes. Fresh fish is obvious and go with a actual fish market for fish.

If raw fish smells like fish, it has already started to turn. If cooked fish smells like ammonia, it is already spoiled.

On the one hand OP, you were right. On the other hand, you're ordering fish at a diner, caveat emptor.
