It turns out I only had around 95 songs. But whatever, this took long enough. I say around because I did writeups as I went and didn't spreadsheet them out so I hand counted them and it might be off at the end.

I will say that this time around I was a lot harsher than last time as I found stopping people from nominated like a lot of standbys really makes them dig deep. I think there are a lot of great songs out there but I admit I was kind of let down by the selection which is part of the reason this took so long. To give a better idea of songs that I enjoyed I'll post the top 25 from last years list after we get the bottom 5 out of the way from this one.

I want to state too that this is just my opinion on the songs and you can like it just fine. Generally I score based on how much I enjoyed the song, but a lot of my enjoyment is tied to some more technical aspects. Also I'm happy that people nominated songs they like (I hope) versus things they'd think I'd like. This is not really a topic I made to find more anime music, I've likely heard more of it than most of you (most because I know Mac has nominated things). I honestly just like ranking things and it's probably somewhat fun for you guys too to see where your songs end up. Everyone likes trying to be number 1 at something.

There are like gimmick type songs and then there are ones that take it too far, like this one. Basically anything good I’d have to say about it is completely overshadowed by like just the large noise of yodeling or whatever.

This is a song with a little more polish I could like overall. The problem is that overall it’s like a little too minimalistic and the vocals and instrumentals it uses are just not good enough to carry the piece. Not to mention it goes from being not bad to just annoying overall. I mean I guess when I say more polish I mean they replace the singers, composition of the song, remove the parts where they just start to yell for no reason in varying keys, etc. So basically it’ll have to be a completely different song.

If you're wondering if the trend of nominators getting songs they did out back to back is going to be a thing. I've already finished sorting maybe 1/3 of the songs or more and I don't know. It might be. I noticed it happened in my waifu ranking topic too and it's likely that the same person somehow chooses the same type of song. I know some of you guys did so you might expect to see other songs by you fall quickly once you see one. But you might also be surprised.

Okay. Pretty much any instrumental work is just killed by the voice. You know that sound when nails scratch against chalk? That’s about my feelings here. The actual instrumentals while sound are not good enough to bring this any higher up the rankings.

If you’ve paid attention to any of my ranking topics (like all 4? Of them) you’ll know I tend to like tracks with dual vocals. However… this is bordering on being unlistenable. Like this feels like one of those weird hipster things that some guy is going to tell me is an amazing song and I’m thinking… a lot of it just sounds like a lot of noise that has been put into a blender and they got something out of it. However, the big kicker is that there are some engrish songs that are fine and some that are not… this one is not.

If you’ve ever seen me post after someone like praises how much they like this song… I always respond by how much I hate it. That said the full version is a lot better than the 90 second OP. Do you know where it goes wrong? When they fucking get to the chorus. The vocals are almost unbearable. Like almost everything else is good to even I’d say great at times (especially the opening) but every time she says uninstall I want to fucking gouge my ears.

I feel like this is a fun song but the vocal work just is not good enough… I mean I know it’s not really meant to be that good… but it’s how do I say it… not fun enough to make up for it not being great (something like Lucky Stars OP or Joshiraku’s ED is something I’d put into this category). Like it’s close but a little short overall. I feel like the instrumentation is a little muddled, but it might be mastering.

Man, the engrish in some places. Like luckily it’s limited but it’s still obviously painful. Like really some songs have pretty bad engrish (like Reach out to the Truth) but I think that song is catchy enough and composed enough to get away with it. This one can’t do that. That said parts of the song really remind me of like the early 2000s when I feel I’d actually listen to this style often.

I don't care much for Sentimental Generation, but it does make me super nostalgic for the show itself, so there's that. I really loved season 2 of that show.

Nice but there are much better songs that focus on the piano. I mean hard to dislike but also not exactly something I’d actually care to look for again. It does do a good job at delivery an emotional feel with very little though, something I think a lot of songs try and fail to do.

Alright I’d put this under a song I think is pretty decent but I just kind of don’t like it for whatever reason. Like it almost seems like the music and the vocals are like just slightly out of place where they need to be in the song. It’s pretty good in certain places and also I kind of question it in others. Like some of the instrumentation is clearly very good but a lot of times it’s just hidden way behind all the vocals. The pretty good solos are not good enough to really make me forget about it also. So it has sparks of being decent, but I don’t think it really managed to fit what it had together well.

I think overall the steins;gate music selection has been heavily overrated by the community simply because the show is very good. (top 10 all time imo). I don’t need to mention how many times I see fucking Hacking the Gate as a top OP pick and I think that that song is only good at best. This one is decent. It’s nowhere near as good as the original version though which I do find to be a pretty good song.

Since i’m pretty sure this is the only chuuni song that was nommed I was kind of hoping inside identity would have made it in. I like that one a lot. Anyways this one is pretty nice. It almost has like a hollywood song feel in terms of tone and progression if that makes sense, but I also think it lacks some of the bells and whistles that such a song would have too.

Okay this song has a little too much of the “wobble” or whatever it is even for me. Like I mean in terms of where it goes it’s decent and is likeable enough but I still struggle to call this anything but like decent at best. Something about it just seems uninspired and while it might not be the songs fault a lot of the notes seem very harsh.

I think the instrumentation in this song is really good. Like the piano work is nice. On a technical aspect it’s great. However, I don’t quite get the same emotional type impact I might from other songs that might be more minimalistic but is much more focused on that aspect.

As of the last 5 I posted (65 and on) we had reached the point where I'd say the songs are at least decent enough to listen to occasionally. A lot of songs got packed into the around this score range (5.0 to 6.0) so like on any given day I could swap a few of these with each other.

Yes that does also mean that before that set every song scored lower than a 5 on a 10 point scale (using half decimal steps).

I do expect I'll be knocking out some favorites fairly shortly though.

This is decent the vocals are nice but I think overall the backing music lacks a punch aside from the solo at the end. I do think that some of these older songs (like mid 90s and back) from some shows are really good, like imo this almost sounds like a song that wants to be kind of 80s but is not going all the way.

You know I almost think there is too much going on here. Like as much as I like songs doing a lot of different things I think it needs to hold back a little. This song has like a lot of really cool moments but also some moments where I kind of question the choices its making when everything is muddled up. Not bad overall but loses points because I don’t really think the vocalist is kind of grating.

Okay so I was not expecting this from like fucking queens blade. Real quickly, like I heard the good guys in the first seasons because fucking evil tyrants or something, which I find to be probably among the best heel turns ever in an anime if true. Anyway the song is decent. It starts out like it’s going to be a lot better than I think it turned out but it lacks variety throughout and is probably a lot better as like the one minute ED. I really like the pseudo retro feel the song has.

This is an almost there song. I really like the background type music and the actual melody of the song is nice too. The singer is just a little off for my taste overall and I think a little more could have been done overall. It has some really nice parts but they are short lived.

A nice but a song that just peaks near good. Vocalist is above average I’d say the backing track is okay at best. Has some of what I like overall in a song in like pacing and not going on too long without a change of pace but doesn’t do anything I’d say exceptionally well.
