Past Masters, Volume One
It feels weird ranking this -- partly because it's a collection of singles, and partly because I listened to this after Revolver and have to face again who they once were before hearing who they later become. It's got some songs I recognize, including a repeat with Love Me Do from the Please Please Me-album. There are also some foreign-language repeats...didn't expect that, but those songs are a big deal with English-speakers so I get it. Make that money! Harmonica's back! From Me To You, Thank You Girl, and I'll Get You feature it to good use. It's a reminder of an instrument they seem to have dropped during their drug-transition. My mom told me about the first time she sincerely held somebody's hand before. It was during -- you won't believe this -- I Want To Hold Your Hand. It's funny how what seems so cliche now was...well, maybe cliche then too, but still new and exciting. From Me To You's a classic, glad to finally come back to this song. Past Masters, Volume One: From Me To You She Loves You I Want To Hold Your Hand Love Me Do Thank You Girl I Feel Fine Yes It Is I Call Your Name I'm Down I'll Get You She's A Woman Bad Boy Slow Down This Boy Matchbox Long Tall Sally Sie Liebt Dich Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand --- Brought to you by GameFlux Free GameFAQs app on Google Play! ... After eight albums:
Revolver Help! Please Please Me With The Beatles A Hard Day's Night Rubber Soul Past Masters, Volume One Beatles For Sale It's got some great older singles and some other decent songs in there too, but as of now I think I favor their later stuff to their earlier stuff. It doesn't feel particularly much like an album because it's more of a collection. The foreign language-songs are funny to hear in a way, but I won't be reminding myself to listen to them soon (and did they have to be in the middle of the album instead of the end?). Check it out for the classics you missed more than the surprise hits you might find. --- Brought to you by GameFlux Free GameFAQs app on Google Play! ... Copied to Clipboard!

I'll update my own lists tomorrow. But yeah count both discs of the White Album as one album. I'd say White Album is the one where my own track ranking most differs from the general opinion. There's some really obscure stuff on there that I love, and some popular stuff that I think is kinda eh.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
This album's so happy! Even when it's sad like She's Leaving Home, it's romanticized. I guess they thought of themselves as a band playing another band here? Not sure what to make of the title and eponymous songs there. The Beatles have rarely had songs so far that were longer than three minutes; several of their albums never had a song that broke that barrier. Sgt. Pepper's, however, has four of its thirteen songs that are longer than that -- including two songs over five minutes long! It's not a big deal nowadays, but back then I wonder how big a deal a "long five-minute song" was. It was at least another way they were evolving. LSD...I mean the song...plays with some wonderful imagery. The three big drum-smacks leading into the chorus are fun too. This song and I thought another one referenced a girl at a train station or turnstile...but I can't figure out that other song now (might be wrong). It made me wonder if there was a real-life thing that affected them like that, but I want to be careful about taking anything too literally this album. Getting Better referenced beating a wife...didn't expect that from a song whose chorus I've heard all my life! Wasn't it in a commercial at some point? I take it Ringo learned new types of drums through-out this transition? Within You Without You doesn't sound like your average drumset! It's been neat to hear all the new instruments they've brought on lately. Horns particularly come to mind, just...not in this song. You can tell Paul thinks he's on top of his game in When I'm Sixty-Four by the way he ends with a real gentle "woo." Funny little touch. I was confused to hear A Day In The Life here because I previously thought that was the song the band went out on career-wise, not album-wise. Maybe I didn't learn as much from my music history class as I thought...! The song's a bit more terrifying than I remember. And now the album's over--PSYCHE, not yet! There are a few weird seconds at the end, repeating the words "Never could see any other way." I'll force some commentary here and guess this is how people who won't try other states of mind sound to the Beatles who did try them. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: With A Little Help From My Friends Getting Better A Day In The Life Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band When I'm Sixty-Four She's Leaving Home Within You Without You Sgt Peppers.. After nine albums:
Revolver Help! Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Please Please Me With The Beatles A Hard Day's Night Rubber Soul Past Masters, Volume One Beatles For Sale I like that the album felt like it had a theme thanks to the two Sgt Pepper's-songs nearly bookending everything else. It lulls a bit in the middle for me, but a lot of it feels good to sing along with -- as encouraged from the very beginning -- and it's another CD with some smash hits. This is the point in my project where I decide I need to read their Wiki-histories for each album...I'll probably do that when I finish this though, but in the meanwhile I'm definitely wondering about the specifics for what led them here. --- Posted using GameFlux Get it now for Android from Google Play! ... I don't think that anyone mentioned this, but about half the songs from the first 2 albums and For Sale are covers. It was relatively uncommon at the time for bands to write most of their own music and lyrics as the Beatles did.

magical mystery tour feels incoherent and incomplete because it is - the first half was originally released alone as an EP in the UK, and the second half with the singles was tacked on arbitrarily to turn it into an album for the american audience
the second side is great, of course, and the album is better for its inclusion, but taken as a whole the record is really lacking in cohesion, which completely makes sense. it's a decent listen, but it's not something I listen to front-to-back very often. --- And if you don't know, now you know. ... Magical Mystery Tour
I can only laugh at the idea of how many drugs went into the making of this album. Their title is basically advertising this, and it's delightful with a fair share of confusion in the mix too. Great opening track though, better than what I remember of many opening tracks on their other albums. Is this what inspired Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine? What a fun flute-solo in The Fool On The Flute. It makes me laugh. Flying's their first song without any lead vocals, so that's neat. I Am The Walrus has a lot of questions for me to ask, but my main one's this: is this what they modeled Dr. Robotnik after? Lennon's glasses, walrus's 'stache, later adapts the name Dr. Eggman -- this can't be an accident, right? I feel like I never understood Sonic games now..... Hello Goodbye was David Beckham's big song for when he joined American an American soccer team. Never watched him, but I do love the song. All You Need Is Love is one of their most iconic songs, and it's a great way to end an album. Then, just when you think the Beatles have completely removed themselves from what first made then famous, you can hear them distantly singing "She loves you, yeah yeah yeah" at the end of the album. That side of them is still around, but is it a memory of a lost moment or foreshadowing for what they'll return to next? Either way, they never lost sight of their common theme every album: love. Revolver Help! Magical Mystery Tour Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Please Please Me With The Beatles A Hard Day's Night Rubber Soul Past Masters, Volume One Beatles For Sale The first half finds itself generally on a downward spiral after a great start, but from I Am The Walrus afterward it is an excellent run of songs only interrupted by Baby You're A Rich Man. The White Album's gonna take a lot of time to process and I'm slacking in my itch.io topic, so forgive me if it takes a few days to really cover this next one.
In the meanwhile, any interesting interviews or tidbits are encouraged! I tried to find George Harrison's Japan-concert on Youtube as previously recommended, but I couldn't find the 1971 concert. There's one from the '90s with Eric Clapton though -- that's been alright so far! --- Posted using GameFlux Get it now for Android from Google Play! ... Copied to Clipboard!

First pass on the White Album: I kinda thought the weirdness would end after Magical Mystery Tour. Nope!

I feel like it is generally agreed upon that had the Beatles been able to cut the White Album down to a single record it would have easily been there best album. But once you start talking with people about which songs to chop out, everyone disagrees.
That being said, I think Happiness Is a Warm Gun is perhaps my favorite Beatles song. --- Red Alert: A Path Beyond - The FPS based on C&C Red Alert Download and play for free at http://w3dhub.com/ ... Copied to Clipboard!

But once you start talking with people about which songs to chop out, everyone disagrees. Hm, I never really thought about this, but let me give it a go. Without giving away TOO much of my rankings.... -Glass Onion is very much a Lennon solo career type song, so that's gone. -Why Don't We Do It In the Road is obvious filler -Release a couple of singles. Birthday and Piggies as A-sides, I'm So Tired and Don't Pass Me By as B-sides. -As a personal choice, get rid of Yer Blues. -USSR, WMGGW, Blackbird and Helter Skelter are far too iconic and are particularly known for being on this particular album, so those stay. -Rocky Raccoon and Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da have their own nice cult followings so those stay too. -Good Night gets to stay by virtue of being the most appropriate closing track on the album -REPLACE the album version of Revolution with the far superior single version -For the last six, I'm going to arbitrarily take away Bungalow Bill, Martha My Dear, I Will, Me and My Monkey, Long Long Long, and Honey Pie and see what happens With that, I give you my revised White Album track listing... Side 1: 2. Dear Prudence 3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 4. Mother Nature's Son 5. Sexy Sadie 6. Happiness is a Warm Gun 7. Helter Skelter 8. Julia Side 2: 10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 11. Rocky Raccoon 12. Revolution (single version) 13. Savoy Truffle 14. Cry Baby Cry 15. Good Night Had to mess with the track listing a bit to get a strong performance order, but that's the best I could come up with even while leaving in one extra song than I originally intended. --- darkx remembers his friend, GrapefruitKing. Time to update my album ranking
1. Rubber Soul 2. Revolver 3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 4. ??? 5. Magical Mystery Tour 6. ??? 7. A Hard Day's Night 8. Help! 9. Please Please Me 10. With the Beatles 11. ??? 12. Beatles for Sale Yeah, with three albums left there's still one more stinker lurking around IMO. Don't worry, I'll explain in sufficient detail why I have that particular album so low when we get to it. --- darkx remembers his friend, GrapefruitKing.
