I was named after George Harrison when my mom heard Here Comes The Sun while pregnant with me. That said, I've never really listened to them that much before. It's time to finally learn more about my namesake and a worldwide cultural phenomenon.

Here's the goal: listen to all of their albums in order, rank the songs for each album, and rank the albums.

My main intentional experiences with the Beatles over the years were listening to the #1 hits on the album 1, George Harrison's Brainwashed-album, and having sex once during the movie Across The Universe (Strawberry Fields are fifteen or twenty minutes max, am I right?!). I also tried last month to make a Pandora station ONLY for Beatles-music, but that turned out weird...so yeah, I don't feel like I know them super well.

If the recent topic about people's favorite Beatles-song is any indication, this should be fun.

Tag. Definitely interested.

Also, they've been way more accessible through streaming venues in the last year so there's plenty of options to choose from whether it's Prime Music/Google Play/Spotify

Yeah the Beatles have always been held back through these types of services. IIRC they weren't even on iTunes until like 2010 or so.

I'll begin tomorrow, but in the meanwhile please help (Help!) me understand what albums I actually need to consider here. What I think works are:

Please Please Me
With the Beatles
A Hard Day's Night
Beatles for Sale
Help!
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Magical Mystery Tour
The White Album
Yellow Submarine
Abbey Road
Let It Be

Does that pretty well cover it? Anything necessary with the remasters? Wikipedia has some other stuff like My Bonnie and Yesterday And Today...what about them? Anything else?

That's the British lineup of albums, which is generally accepted to be the definitive/official/canon version; the U.S. received a different lineup of albums for the first few years, with different track listings on AHDN, Help, Rubber Soul and Revolver, and completely different albums altogether for the others. The first album that had the same track listing universally was Sgt. Pepper, and they pretty much all followed suit from there.

BUT if you listen to the albums you listed, you also need to listen to Past Masters 1&2, which contain all the singles that weren't released on albums. I recommend this is the route you go down, as, like I said before, the U.S.-only albums don't contain any material you won't find here and are not usually considered to be the definitive way to experience the Beatles catalogue.

Also there's really only four tracks you need to listen to on Yellow Submarine - Hey Bulldog, All Together Now, It's All Too Much, and Only a Northern Song. The others are either repeats from other albums or scores from the film that aren't performed by the Beatles.

There are a few really big songs of theirs that were only released as singles and aren't on any albums. I Want to Hold Your Hand and Hey Jude come to mind immediately, but there may be few others. Although now that I'm thinking about it, you probably would have heard most of them already.

I wouldn't listen to Anthology for anything other than fun, certainly wouldn't include it in the ranking, with two exceptions - Free as a Bird and Real Love were unfinished John Lennon songs that Paul, George and Ringo dug up and finished in the 90s. Both got significant radio play, so I tend to count them.

Please Please Me

First album! This is definitely the catchy early pop-rock sound I expected from them (and told myself I didn't like growing up). I like it though -- pretty easy to sing along with by the second listen-through thanks to their fun use of repetition. They sure like to sing about love! It should be interesting to see how far they deviate from this formula that got them started.....

I love the harmonica, so it's great to see they have more songs that use it than just Love Me Do (one of the first songs I learned to play). Chains, Please Please Me, There's A Place...it's definitely incorporated! It's a fun little way to break up a song and it works for them here.

Do You Want To Know A Secret caught me off-guard because I'm working on a show where a woman is speaking with lines directly from this song. I did the show last year too and knew it was a Beatles-song, but I never heard the song before...so after a year of hearing a young actress "say" the song without singing it or having music, it's a little unusual to me now!

And man, didn't realize Twist And Shout's one of their very first songs. Loved that scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

So I'm still trying to mentally tie the artists with their voices and instruments. I think just off this album:

John Lennon: guitar. Sings in Anna, Chains, Ask Me Why, Please Please Me, Baby It's You, Do You Want To Know A Secret, There's A Place, and Twist And Shout

Paul McCartney: guitar. Sings in I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Love Me Do, P.S. I Love You, and A Taste Of Honey.

George Harrison: guitar and harmonica. Sings in Boys.

Ringo Starr: drums. Sings in, uh, the background.

Please Please Me:
Twist And Shout
I Saw Her Standing There
Love Me Do
P.S. I Love You
Anna (Go To Him)
Chains
Please Please Me
Boys
A Taste Of Honey
Misery
Do You Want To Know A Secret
Baby It's You
There's A Place
Ask Me Why

With The Beatles

More of that classic pop-rock sound I expect from the Beatles! I don't notice much of an evolution yet from Please Please Me...give it time, I suppose. This album is somewhat ordered by its strongest to weakest songs...kicks off so good, then it wanders into other songs that generally just aren't quite on the same level.

More harmonica, but it's just Little Me this time. Is it getting phased out soon? Hmmmmm.

There's a fun second with the guitar in All My Loving...super-easy to breeze past, but I enjoy it.

Growing up, my dad was known by a lot of his friends and family for introducing them to the Beatles. It's funny now to realize he retired as a mail carrier and the Beatles have a song called Please Mister Postman.

Is this where the phrase Roll Over Beethoven comes from? Huh.

You Really Got A Hold On Me is the first clear example to me about imagining how women could go so crazy for them. John Lennon's clearly working his voice here, and it's great. Fun little love ballad.

With The Beatles:
It Won't Be Long
All I've Got To Do
All My Loving
You Really Got A Hold On Me
Don't Bother Me
Hold Me Tight
Money (That's What I Want)
Till There Was You
Roll Over Beethoven
Please Mister Postman
I Wanna Be Your Man
Not A Second Time
Devil In Her Heart
Little Me

I think it's very important to observe the years these albums were released, and the sheer amount of QUALITY music they were pumping out in their early careers, not to mention a crazy tour schedule. To me, that makes their early poppy stuff all the more impressive.

Fair, so perhaps the real evolution during this period was the rest of the industry. Both of these albums were in 1963 -- not a bad one-two combo.

I threw together a pretty rough list so we can see how our tastes compare. A few things you need to know - First, there's definitely some stuff in the Beatles' catalogue that I need to give a very thorough listen to at this point and when I do I'm sure a lot of stuff on this list will change. Second, I have some pretty controversial opinions. There's some really popular stuff that I have fairly low, and some obscure stuff that I have pretty high. Third, The Beatles are my absolute favorite band of all time, and I genuinely love most of their songs. Out of the 210 songs I included on this ranking (I combined three tracks as one entry because they flow one into the next and as a trio rank higher than any of the three would rank separately... you'll know what this is when you get to it), my top tier literally cuts off at 66. But anyway, I'll fill in as we go and see how alike we are on here.

A Hard Day's Night

Hey, I used to have their movie poster on my bedroom wall! It was right along with the posters I actually wanted up -- pages and pages of stillshots from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.

https://loftcinema.org/files/2016/06/a-hard-days-night-poster1.jpg

Never saw the movie as far as I remember, but one of these Beatles movies influenced the longform-improvisation scene I studied in New York City. I understand this or another movie had a scene where somebody asked what they call their haircut, and a Beatle responded with "Arthur." Well, Del Close was creating this new performance style in Chicago at the time and he asked his team what they should call it. Somebody responded with "Harold" like the Beatles-joke, and now if you see a longform improv show then there's a decent chance you'll see a Harold run because it's become the standard in that field.

Anyway, that opening title track's too good -- no wonder the movie's named after it. After three albums, I'm also feeling like I prefer their faster-paced rocking style more than their slower ballads. Looking forward to the exceptions and changes in my expectations, but so far gimme the rock and roll!

Harmonica's featured in I Should Have Known Better...and is that a cowbell in You Can't Do That?! It's just funny to hear some of these sounds now in our era where the beat regularly drops for some mad electronica.

The Beatles have very mixed feelings on money! Sometimes they sing about how love's no substitute for money, and other times they don't care too much for money. I guess you can afford to be torn when you have infinite amounts of both.....

A Hard Day's Night:
A Hard Day's Night
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You
Can't Buy Me Love
Any Time At All
You Can't Do That
I Should Have Known Better
Tell Me Why
When I Get Home
And I Love Her
Things We Said Today
I'll Be Back
I'll Cry Instead
If I Fell

This album sometimes felt like it had a different...I dunno if production value or vibe or what is the best word, but I felt like this was built for a movie. That could just be confirmation bias though, and movies can have good soundtracks -- and this was good too! A Hard Day's Night, I'm Happy Just To Dance With You, and Can't Buy Me Love are a great trio of songs.

You do know there's a movie they made called Hard Day's Night right? Or was that really a total guess

Also you should watch and rank their movies as well

Hey, I used to have their movie poster on my bedroom wall!

Never saw the movie as far as I remember, but one of these Beatles movies influenced the longform-improvisation scene I studied in New York City. I understand this or another movie had a scene where somebody asked what they call their haircut, and a Beatle responded with "Arthur."

[...]

Anyway, that opening title track's too good -- no wonder the movie's named after it.

I was just trying to say it felt more like it fit a movie than the others, possibly due to already knowing it was a movie.

I was trying to look up AHDN on YouTube, but I don't want to buy it today. Maybe I'll ask around though and see if some friends can hook me up.

Oh dear that track listing on AHDN. For what it's worth noting, AHDN was the only one of the band's first 5 albums that was comprised of all original songs. The others all had at least two covers, and as many as six.

I'll just post my "full" list every other album so as to not flood the page as much, but where the AHDN tracks fall on my overall ranking:

16. If I Fell
30. Can't Buy Me Love
32. A Hard Day's Night
44. I Should Have Known Better
52. I'll Be Back
74. I'll Cry Instead
97. Anytime At All
149. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You
166. When I Get Home
167. Tell Me Why
169. You Can't Do That
179. And I Love Her
197. Things We Said Today

Albums:
1. ???
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???
5. ???
6. ???
7. A Hard Day's Night
8. ???
9. Please Please Me
10. With the Beatles
11. ???
12. ???

Haha, funny disagreement on If I Fell. Still a fine song...if this is one of the weakest songs for me and these first few albums aren't near the best available as your list suggests, it's gonna make for a fun randomized playlist when I'm done here!

What were the covers so far (besides Roll Over Beethoven)?

Never knew Twist And Shout was a cover...wild, man.

I've listened to Beatles For Sale twice now and will go over it when I get home.

Dave Barry always insists that the Isley Brothers' version of Twist and Shout is better than the Beatles'.

Can't Buy Me Love so good. That and Twist and Shout are probably my favorite two that I know so far.

Hard Day's Night is my #3 Beatles album. I'm way more into their later stuff generally, but I think that album is close to flawless.

(Also Things We Said Today is probably the best song on the second half, you guys are mad.)

I really want to rank AHDN higher but that string of super forgettable songs all in a row on the second side just kills it for me.

I like the Across the Universe version of If I Fell more than the original, but both are great.
