invert Y axis should NEVER be off, it is objectively bad game design if invert Y axis isn't on by default.

it's only natural to think of control stick as your character's neck when looking around and when I pull my neck back my head looks up.

external image

When I pull the control stick back I expect my character to look up. When they look down it is completely disorienting and difficult to play

forward movement and looking around are typically separate sticks so that shouldn't be a problem!

now remember I'm talking about console gaming only here. For PC's obviously inverted Y-axis doesn't make sense with a mouse

I heard that some game recently did something pretty smart, I don't remember what game it was though

What it did was, in the tutorial, told you to use the right analog stick to look up. If you pressed down to do it it would automatically configure the y-axis to be inverted but if you pressed up, it kept it normal.

see this is the wrong line of thinking. Your sight is part of your whole head not something separate

This would be fine if the camera were panning up and down, but it is tilting on an axis. The axis is your neck.

I don't like either axis being inverted in practically any case. It feels really unintuitive, I'd much rather go left if I press left and up if I press up. Don't really understand the reasoning to inverting the y-axis either, when most of the people who want it don't invert the x-axis so it's not even consistent within that whole "think of the control stick as tilting the person's head" argument.

Though the most disorienting example to this day is still that Star Wars trilogy arcade shooter. Not so much the flight sim parts because those made enough sense given the joystick and flying, but the lightsaber parts had on screen prompts of like "diagonal up right to diagonal down left" with the x axis uninverted, y-axis inverted.

Nowhere. My sight stayed stationary while my head moved. My head tilted back to look up and tilted forward to look down.

I view games as a camera, not as an extension of my head. So if I want the screen to scroll up, I point up. I guess y-axis inverted would make for a more realistic gaming experience, but I'm fine with the camera perspective.

this.

I'm so used to y axis not inverted and I never saw the point in inverted y axis. I always figured that was just a "thing" for FPS fans and I was like "okay, I don't get why they like that, but at least I can switch to non-inverted".

the whole thing about the neck makes sense, but again, I just see it as more of a camera. Want to look up, I hit the control stick upwards.

Yeah I can't do this for FPS or TPS games. It's ok if it's a flight thing but otherwise it seems extremely counterintuitive to hold down to look up.

That

It makes sense to use inverted Y when you are controlling an axis, like with flight controls, but controlling a camera is just moving around a single point on a screen, so it makes no sense to use inverted Y.

Yeah, hence the "Not so much the flight sim parts because those made enough sense given the joystick and flying".

But a lightsaber's pretty different than a plane. And on screen prompts rapidly showing arrows going "left, upper right, down, lower left" would make me think to press in those directions instead of "left, lower right, up, upper left",

I invert the Y axis in any game with first-person controls, on consoles or PCs. I don't really know why, I guess I just learned it that way. If I try to play any game with a non-inverted y axis, it is completely disorienting and I always mess up. The only thing I hate is games that don't give you the option to invert it or not, which is becoming an increasing rarity.
