In the new Tomb Raider, Lara Croft will suffer. Her best friend will be kidnapped. She'll get taken prisoner by island scavengers. And then, Rosenberg says, those scavengers will try to rape her.

I don't know, on the one hand I like the idea that they could humanize the character enough that you would actually want to keep them safe while you play. In most games you don't have that without a severe threat of lost progress, which isn't the same as actually caring about the character which they seem to be talking about here. You're just willing to charge blindly into whatever potentially deadly situation because you know you probably won't run into anything you can't handle, and if you do you can just restart at a nearby checkpoint and try again. If they pulled that emotional connection off then that's really impressive.

Not really big on "PRESS X TO NOT GET RAPED" though.

This comment:

"That's not to say women do some sexist s***, we do, it happens...we're human.

To me it's like they removed all the 'sexy/exploit' from Lara and replaced it with a different form of 'sexy/exploit'...now Lara isn't dominate she's in fear of being dominated by the elements and from other humans. In retrospect it would be GREAT for her character but the rape thing? That's such a easy Go to, Rape is horrible, terrible...victims suffer for most of their lives and some overcome it, some aren't so lucky.

I ALWAYS hate using rape as a plot device for women because it's never what rape is really about...very few writers are able to talk or give a character that's a survivor of such an abuse with care or understanding. They use it for pandering, they exploit the horrors.

And it's seemingly ALWAYS for female characters as a means to make them 'stronger' because they've 'survived' the horror and 'Got revenge'. It's shameless.

Rape is about control and power, the act is sexual but the meaning is not..."

sums it up pretty well. It's a cheap ploy to make the game seem more "mature". Dumb and kind of offensive.

I can't be the only one seeing the parallels between this Tomb Raider reboot and Metroid: Other M, can I? Because Other M was basically Sakamoto taking a massive s*** on one of the few established strong female characters in video games and remaking her into a weak, passive woman who needed orders to so much as put her power suit on, and going off that interview that's pretty much what the Tomb Raider developers are going for here.

I mean I get that it's a reboot and things are going to change, but you're rebooting one of the most iconic characters in all of video games (leaving aside that she's female here). If Legend of Zelda was rebooted (like it is every new game ololol) and Link was remade as a weak character who gets smacked back down by fate every time he has the sheer brass balls to act like the hero of Hyrule, the outcry would be incredible.

The rape thing sounds silly, but it's at least understandable it could possibly happen in that sort of situation I guess. Having never played a Tomb Raider game I see no issue with her not being a confident and badass survivalist since this is supposed to be an origin story I think.

Who is Lara taking orders from? It looks like they are telling a story where a college student is stuck on an island and learns how to survive on her own. Of course she is going to be weak at first, it's an origins story!

From: DSAutoResponder | #029

It doesn't need to be included, but why can't they include it if they want to? It's ok to constantly threaten our video game characters with painful gory and violent deaths, but not rape? Certainly rape isn't worse or is hardly worse than having your head ripped off or being impaled multiple times.

Nah, the difference between Other M and Tomb Raider is that TR is supposed to show Lara becoming strong after weakness. But from the trailers it looks like they're taking that to ridiculous levels and having her scream and moan and get the crap beat out of her at every possible opportunity. It just looks excessive.

Other M just kind of ruined Samus's personality, forever. With Tomb Raider at least you can tell the point is for her to improve.

I think it's a different kind of transformation but there is the obvious similarity of there being a different take on an established female character. I agree with your premise that any reboot should probably not seek to reinvent a character so strongly, feminists will get angry and rage like feminists do, but it's not even about that, we wouldn't want something like that happening to link or cloud or whoever else either.

as pointed out, it's also less of an issue being an origins story, samus was ridiculous because she was acting that way at an advanced stage in her career

Try making a game where there's a threat of a man getting raped. Advertise that fact almost a year before it comes out. See the kind of reaction and sales you get.

I'd bet a large sum of money that the reaction would be "Why does that need to be in a video game", and the sales would be abysmal.

Do you seriously not see the difference between "bad guys want to rape character" and "character actually gets raped" here? They aren't going to put a rape scene in a video game like this, ever.

Did the scene in Spiderman where those guys want to rape Mary Jane make you this angry also(or countless others like it in film/tv)?

If this was in a believable situation(because insert a man into the same situation and it's no longer believable), I don't think the reaction would be nearly as ridiculous because nobody would really care about a male character.

You know, in the opening when the other guys first showed up and Samus agreed to follow Adam's orders, I thought it was sort of like "This guy is gonna just ***** endlessly if I don't act like he's in charge, I might as well play along for now because I do NOT have the patience for his ****." Obviously as the game went on it became clear that I had misread that situation. Probably would've been a better story if I was right.

Certainly rape isn't worse or is hardly worse than having your head ripped off or being impaled multiple times.

the kind of over the top violence that you're describing that occurs in video games isn't something that happens every day to lots of people, though. Sure, lots of people die in violent conflicts everyday, but nobody gets murdered by demons or eviscerated by alien monsters or anything.

also, why would you want to portray the attempted rape of your video game action hero? what purpose does it serve in the wider context of tomb raider and the story of lara croft? how does being trapped and fighting for her life on an island with a bunch of potential rapists translate into her becoming a globe trotting treasure hunter later in life?

sure, they can put it in their game, but i'm perfectly content and well within my own rights to mock them every step of the way for it.

The issue is that 99% of the time, including an almost rape is bad writing, and do you really trust Crystal Dynamics not to write something crappy here? People are losing their **** because it's incredibly likely to be godawful and a cheap way to get sympathy points for Lara at the cost of decent writing. It's like a western equivalent of making a moeblob.
