FFXII has probably the most unmemorable soundtrack in the series.
I like to make a compilation CD of FF music of the series to listen to while I'm riding in the car or whatever. I went to try to make one of FFXII, and I was like, "...what songs from this game do I even remember liking? Let's see, there was the Esper Battle theme, and uhhhhh"
Hey, I even tried to be fair and listen to the soundtrack again to see if maybe there was something I overlooked.
Came to the same conclusion. This isn't me trying to be some FFXII hater or anything. I just don't think the game does anything exceptionally well except for...well, maybe one or two things.
FFXII has two good themes. The Feywood and Dalmasca Weste-- Easter... one of the sands. The more foreboding deserty one. I guess the esper battle theme is okay too but nothing great. Uhhh what was I saying.
Oh favorite final boss theme um... strangely tough. I guess The Extreme? Maybe Dancing Mad? I like a lot of boss themes but final boss themes aren't often at the top.

I dunno. The only noise I can tolerate when I'm trying to fall asleep is music. I like to sleep in silence and darkness for the most part, which means I'll probably end up marrying some girl who has to have some sort of white noise like a fan blowing to sleep.
I remember one time trying to take a nap at my grandma's house, and all I could hear was the sound of her grandfather clock ticking. It was so distracting it took me forever to fall asleep. I dunno how to describe why it bothers me so much, but I can't not notice that kind of noise.

Also, good news, everyone! I've managed to find on Amazon a Street Fighter II comic miniseries that I owned as a child but was lost to the void at some point! It's only eight issues, and I got each one for less than 5 bucks a pop! I think shipping is going to cost more than the comics themselves!

Persona 4's The Genesis might not be the greatest song to listen to out of context, but during the final battle it's an immensely powerful piece. Boss music can be such a large part of setting the scene - it's a high point of nearly any game when it's done right.

24. Laguna Loire (Final Fantasy VIII) Quote: I speak with passion, from the heart! Thats what matters most.
Laguna is a lovable moron. Thats probably the simplest way to describe him. He says and does the most ridiculous and nonsensical things at times, but you cant help but love the guy. I think what makes Laguna likable despite all the crazy stuff he does is that, deep down, you know he has a good heart. Hes a kind man who cares deeply about everyone around him. He doesnt do the best job of expressing it sometimes, but he does try. Laguna also has a natural charisma that draws people to him, which is why Kiros and Ward continue to follow the guy despite all the trouble he constantly gets them into. Plus, as Kiros says, Lifes pretty boring without you as entertainment, my man.
One of my favorite Laguna quirks is his tendency to misquote common clichés, such as The unfamiliar always happens, and Like killing two pigs with one stone. Of course, Kiros and Wards attempts to correct him often lead to hilarious results as well. I also love Lagunas occasional delusions of grandeur, such as when he talks about their grand escape from Centra, while Kiros more accurately describes it as them being chased out by Esthar soldiers and getting severely injured. Speaking of which, that scene is one of my personal favorite Laguna moments. I love how he tosses Kiros and Ward off the cliff into the waters below, and then hes like, You guys sure have guts. You know how high this cliff is? as if they jumped in on their own without him shoving them! Then he slowly and delicately tries to climb down the cliff, slips, and falls down to the water below while screaming and trying not to shout obscenities. So good.
However, theres more to Laguna than just comic relief (although he fills the role exceptionally well). Hes gone through a lot of heartbreak and sorrow in his life, which is part of the reason youre introduced to him in the first place, because of Ellone wanting to find a way to change the past and prevent any of that from happening. Yet one of the things I like and respect about Laguna is that he manages to come out on the other side of all of those difficulties without losing his optimistic and hopeful demeanor or his sense of humor, though you can tell hes matured a lot as a result of all hes been through. Laguna rarely talks openly about his pain (other than mentioning that Ellone getting kidnapped while he was there with her was the most painful episode of my life). He always prefers to remain cheerful about things, even to the point of cheesiness (such as his speech about how to survive time compression).
I always found it sadly ironic how Laguna went all the way to Esthar to rescue Ellone, and while he succeeded at that, he wasnt able to truly save her or ever see Raine again because he got elected as president for being the hero of the revolution. Im sure all he wanted was to go back to Winhill and live as a family with Ellone, Raine, and their son, but fate would not be so kind to him. Although Laguna had dreams of being a journalist and a world traveler, that little town was home to him (Interesting aside: If you go back to Winhill during the present as Squall, someone there will mention how theres an anonymous benefactor whos been generously supporting the town for years, and the obvious conclusion youre meant to draw is that its Laguna). I was really glad when he got to go back to Winhill and finally visit Raines grave during the ending. Plus, the flashback scene where he proposes to her during the ending always gives me chills, probably because the music climaxes right as she hugs him. Great moment.
Finally, I wish the game had explored Lagunas relationship with Squall a bit more. Its so heavily implied that theyre father and son that its obvious that was Squares intention (and they confirmed it in the FFVIII Ultimania, to boot). Yet you dont get any sort of conversation between the two of them. If you talk to Laguna on the Ragnarok, he says something along the lines of, Lets talk when this is all over. Ive got some things I want to share with you, but if you dont want to, I understand. I dunno, some people like leaving the gaps unfilled or what have you, but I wanted some closure on stuff like that. Plus, I still insist that Square ought to make an FFVIII-0 starring Laguna, Kiros, and Ward to cover their adventures from 18 years before the events of the game up to the present. Itd be totally awesome!
Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Final Fantasy VIII character?
Those last two paragraphs were pretty spoiler-heavy indeed...!
Yeah, the lack of closure on that issue has always been one of my biggest grievances with FFVIII. I'm glad to see you agree with me that it would have been better to actually do something with it rather than just leave it hanging. Some people like it more this way and I absolutely don't. Very Western of me, I know. So be it.
Squall is the best character. Laguna's the second best.

I do wish there were more Laguna sequences I guess.
Not that I want it to replace any of the Squall sequences, but because of the instruction manual, I felt the game was trying to sell this "two main characters" idea and it ended up quite lop-sided.
Well, I thought they had a pretty good balance between them on Disc 1 and 3, but Disc 2, you get that flashback to open the disc, and that's pretty much it. Doesn't help that Disc 2 is basically the most important one in the game. Probably the longest disc, too.

Because I don't get home until right now (5:30 A.M. local time for those of you who are bad at time zones). I work 10 hour shifts, but it's also a 40 minute drive one way, so it averages out to 12+ hours total including the commute.

"I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now."
I love Kirby, but Ive actually beaten surprisingly few of his games (Dont worry, youre not reading an LMS post). Ive played quite a few but never finished them. I havent played either of his offerings for the Wii, but I plan on giving them a shot eventually. But Kirby Super Star is one of those games Ive been able to go back to time and time again because its just so much fun, and they added some great stuff with the Ultra port for the DS as well. Its a bunch of different experiences all rolled into one, despite being Kirby, which I suppose is fitting for a character who can take on all sorts of different forms and powers.
For those of you whove never played Kirby Super Star, its basically a bunch of different Kirby games in one. Most of them are pretty short, and some of them are REALLY short. You can beat Spring Breeze in like 15-30 minutes. Its only four levels long, and for the most part ridiculously easy. Its like a tutorial more than anything else. The only part I ever struggle with is the Kracko boss fight, for whatever the reason. Dyna Blade is also pretty easy, but its longer and features more powers, including my personal favorite, the Yo-Yo. I love that thing. Its got some pretty fun levels, and the final battle against Dyna Blade is pretty cool, too.
But those are just the appetizers. Once you get into The Great Cave Offensive, you get into the real meat of Kirby Super Star. Its probably the longest game in the collection, and its a lot of fun. Its unique among all these games in that it encourages exploration much more so than the others do, and its more open-ended. You can go back and revisit other levels to find stuff you missed and things like that. There are various treasures you can collect spread throughout, many of them references to other Nintendo series (You can actually obtain the Triforce in this game! No joke!). The Great Cave Offensive has some great boss battles as well, my personal favorite being a boss that pokes fun at old school RPG battles. Its really neat.
Revenge of Meta Knight is a race against the clock in that each level has a time limit, but there isnt really much pressure because you generally have more than enough time to beat the levels without worrying about it running out on you. You also get a good bit of humorous dialogue between Meta Knight and his minions as the game progresses and theyre talking about Kirby getting closer and closer to them. This game has really good level design, especially once you get onboard the Halberd, Meta Knights ship. Its a really cool area. You also get an epic final clash with Meta Knight followed by a grand escape on a Wheelie.
Milky Way Wishes is probably my favorite of the bunch. Its different from the other games in Super Star in that Kirby doesnt get his powers from swallowing enemies. In this one, you have to find a particular icon representing a power, and once you find it, you can activate that power any time, which is neat. The various worlds are pretty cool, and the final battle against Marx is my favorite in the game. Its actually challenging, especially for a Kirby game.
Super Star Ultra also added some neat new modes, probably my personal favorite being Helper to Hero, which is doing the Arena (A gauntlet of bosses from Super Star) as one of the Helper Buddy powers instead of Kirby. It can be pretty tough to beat it with just one power, but I managed to do it with a Plasma Wisp. Theres also a mode where you can play through various levels in Super Star as Meta Knight, and believe it or not, hes more broken in this game than he is in Brawl! Thats not even an exaggeration! The only part that is even remotely challenging is the new last boss they added for this Meta Knight mode, who is basically a Meta Knight clone with some beefed up powers. Because as we all know, the only thing that can beat a Meta Knight is, of course, another Meta Knight.
I know Ive only kind of lightly touched on all the games, but the core of Kirby is in all of these games. Its full of fun, lighthearted platforming, and playing around with the various powers the games have to offer is a blast. If youre a fan of any other Kirby games and you havent played this one, you need to check it out. You wont regret it.
