Whoo, second topic is at 500! If you'd like to catch up with the previous topics before it purges, you can go here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/62633812
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/62771258

The first link is dead obviously, and once the second topic purges, simply replace the "game" in gamefaqs.com with a word that describes a person who simply reads topics without posting in them (like many of you reading this topic right now!), and you can find both of those topics that way.

To reiterate from the first topic:

The one basic ground rule you can expect for all writeups is EXPECT SPOILERS. All of the writeups will contain them. I will not mark for spoilers during character or game writeups, so this is your warning up front. I will mark spoilers for the moments list since even stating what the moment is could spoil people, so I will make sure to be careful in that regard.

Also, I will make no attempt to pretend to be objective in any of these writeups (In fact, this is the only time I will use this word in this entire topic!). All of my writeups are shamelessly biased without apology. I will attempt to do at least one writeup per day, alternating between characters, games, and moments, but I can't make any promises.

And, as always, debate, discussion, disagreement, deductions, and all those other D words are, of course, encouraged!

27. Super Street Fighter IV
external image

Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the last generation was the announcement of Street Fighter IV. I personally thought the series was done after SF3, and we would only ever see the SF guys in ports and crossovers. Then Capcom released that trailer of Ryu and Ken fighting with that crazy art style, and the hype train got rolling. People started debating about whether the game was going to be a 2-D fighter or 3-D fighter, among other things. Personally, I didn’t really care what it was going to be. I was just thrilled that we were going to have another Street Fighter.

When the game finally came out, I played the mess out of the thing, just like I had with previous incarnations of the game, only now there was online play! Street Fighter IV was my first really significant online experience. I had dabbled in online gaming briefly with a couple other games, but nothing like this. I’ve played several Board 8 guys in SFIV over the past few years, like Weaku, HM, Ulti, thundersheep, and KP. I’ve mentioned to you guys before how none of my real life friends are very good at video games, especially fighting games, so it was nice to have some real people who could actually give me a good challenge in a fighting game.

However, there was a problem with Street Fighter IV, at least for me. I couldn’t find any one particular character I wanted to main. I played around with a bunch of them, but I never felt…comfortable with any one guy, I guess you could say. Then the announcement of Super Street Fighter IV came. I know a lot of people were angry at Capcom for doing a cheap cash grab with an upgrade of SFIV not long after the original came out, but honestly, I probably would’ve quit playing the game years ago if not for SSFIV because of my inability to find a main I was comfortable using. Thankfully, SSFIV remedied that problem with the introduction of (anyone who’s ever played me online knows who I’m about to say)…Guy! KP was even kind enough to create a Leonhart Guy Flowchart to describe my play style that, again, anyone who’s ever played me online knows is 100% accurate. I also like to use Cody a lot, and sometimes I think I’m actually better with him, but Guy is more fun for me, so I use him more.

Anyway, I haven’t even talked about any of the specifics of the game itself yet! I enjoy a lot of the new elements they added to Street Fighter, such as Ultras and Focus Attacks. EX moves are a lot of fun and can turn a match around if you can use it properly. I love the art style of the game as well. It looks great. The gameplay is smooth, and I think it’s pretty well balanced, maybe not so much in terms of who’s viable and who isn’t, but in terms of how much damage characters do, how much health characters have, etc. Rounds aren’t too short, but you aren’t always running into time over situations either. You don’t really see many people mention this when it comes to fighting games, but to me, how long the average round lasts is important. I feel like it’s not that fun if the match is over too quickly, and I certainly don’t ever want to have a situation where a time over decides a match. I think Super Street Fighter IV manages to provide a good balance in this area. Fun game.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite game to play online?

Oh as for the bonus question, I played the hell out of Counter-Strike back in the day.
So much in fact it's probably still my most played online game, even if I haven't touched it in years.

Recent years I've probably clocked the most hours on Mario Kart Wii (8000+ VR baby), and have put in some time on Uncharted 2.

I was assuming this wasn't counting MMOs, but if it did, FFXI is also good fun and I really want to play it again when I get the chance.

Final Fantasy Tactics spoilers below

27. Final Fantasy Tactics – Fort Zeakden

If you just want to watch the scenes, you can skip the second video since it’s all battle, although you can check it out and skip around for the mid-battle dialogues, which are always great. Playstation-era Final Fantasy was great for ending the first part of the game with a bang, and Final Fantasy Tactics is no exception. The opening scene where Algus kills Teta on Zalbag’s orders serves as an eye opener, not just for Ramza, but the player as well, as he begins to realize that the world is not as idealistic as he imagined it to be (By the way, the music stopping when Algus kills Teta is an excellent touch). FFT had slowly been building up to something great as Chapter 1 progressed, and it definitely delivered on the build up with this part of the game.

First of all, the battle itself is pretty tough, at least for me. Algus comes equipped with Auto-Potion, which makes him a little bit tougher to kill because he can counteract a lot of the damage you can do if you’re not power leveling (especially considering my Ramza has bad compatibility with Algus, so he does less damage anyway). He also has the crossbow and generally focuses on killing Delita as quickly as possible. The Wizards can make life tough for you, and I generally try to go kamikaze on them by sending one guy straight up to them so the spell hits the caster and usually kills them after you land a solid attack on them while they are charging. Your party is also split into two teams, so that can make it harder to work together and form a potent offense, at least for me. Keep in mind that I am bad at FFT, so I’m sure it’s easy for some of you, but not for me.

Of course, it’s the story that makes this part of the game shine. After Dycedarg giving you his word that he would make sure Teta was rescued safely, he and Zalbag stab Ramza and Delita in the back by not only hiring Algus to help him in the attack on Fort Zeakden, but by ordering him to fire the killing blow. Then you get some great mid-battle dialogue between the three of them, especially Ramza and Algus arguing over the duties of the nobility. You can tell Ramza’s struggling to process everything he’s just seen. He just can’t comprehend what happened. You can see the pain of betrayal and manipulation in Delita as well, and this moment was the catalyst for all he does for the rest of the game. A lot of things in FFT are set in motion with this moment. Plus, you get to kill Algus, so that battle is great for some much-needed catharsis.

The scene after the fight is excellent as well, especially Ramza’s speech after the fort explodes. “I’ve taken my whole life for granted. When it came down to it, I dropped it all and ran.” Great quote that succinctly summarizes the mindset of a man whose naïveté was abruptly and forcibly shattered. Final Fantasy Tactics has a lot of great moments, but this one stands out the most to me because the game just hits you with several gut punches right in a row, and you’re just left feeling like, “Man, that really sucked.” Not in the sense that it was poor quality, of course, but in the sense that you feel despondent about what just happened. Moments that leave you feeling that way are hard to come by, which makes them all the more special when they do happen.

SF4 best fighting game.

You know, there's always a match with you that stands out whenever I think about notable SFIV online matches I've had, and it's the one where I counter a Juri dive kick with Cody's Ultra 1 to win the match. I'm pretty sure I saved it after the fact, and that's probably because:

1. I hate dive kicks
2. I hate Juri

Plus, she dived right into it. It's almost as if that Ultra was designed to counter dive kicks.

26. Guy (Final Fight)
Quote: “Every man must walk his own path. Are you certain you have found yours?”
external image

First of all, the dude’s name in Japanese means “Victorious.” How awesome is that? Second of all, he’s a ninja who wears sneakers. What a brilliant idea! It’s also because he’s quite the runner, apparently. According to Capcom, Guy can run a 100-meter dash in 10.2 seconds. As you can probably surmise if you read my Super Street Fighter IV writeup, that game is largely the reason he’s on the list, but I was actually a Guy fan as far back as the original Final Fight. I was pretty upset when he wasn’t included in the original SNES version of Final Fight, but at least Capcom made up for it later by making Final Fight Guy so you could play as him because he was the best one. He was the fastest, and he had the wall jump kick, which was great.

I also really liked Guy in the Street Fighter Alpha series. I used him a lot there, which is part of the reason I was so excited when he was announced for Super Street Fighter IV. He’s a lot of fun to use, and he fits the way I like to play fighters. I like to be aggressive when I play fighting games (probably too aggressively), so I like how you can play rushdown with Guy with his run moves. Plus, I like how you can play misdirection with him since he has three different run moves: One that stops without doing any attack, one that hits low, and one that hits high but hits overhead if you block low. I also like his vertical Hurricane Kick type move, which can be a good anti-air move if you can time it correctly. And of course, I love flips. And flips. And flips. And flips! They’re good for aggression and mind games as well, since you can try to use them to fake out your opponent to trying to anti-air you while you either land in front of them or fly right past them and get behind them. Probably the main drawback for me with Guy in SSFIV is that I’m no good at landing either of his Ultras since you have to be really close to land either of them (one of them is a grab move with an unusual input, which makes it worse), and they’re not good for countering stuff for the most part unless you have someone who’s dumb enough to let you hit them with a wake up Ultra (which occasionally happens…!).

I also like Guy’s rivalry with Cody. It’s pretty interesting for a beat-em-up/fighting game story, I think. In the original Final Fight after you beat the last boss and rescue Cody’s girlfriend Jessica, instead of staying around to make sure she’s okay and to generally be there to comfort her and stuff, Cody decides to just…leave. Of course, Guy realizes he’s being a complete moron and punches him in the gut so Jessica can catch up to him and not let him get away. Their rivalry in the Alpha and SFIV games brings a new twist to it now that Cody’s become a prison inmate, and Guy has a hard time accepting that his old friend who used to help him fight crime has now sunk to the depths of becoming a criminal himself. They have some cool interactions in the games, such as Guy commenting that he can still sense some good and justice in Cody when he notices that he only seems to pick fights with criminals and people like that, who tries to blow it off as just being a guy who likes to fight. Cody essentially tells him, “I’ve changed. You’ve changed. These things happen. Deal with it.” So they have a pretty neat dynamic, I think.

I also like that Guy is an honorable fighter who only seeks to use his skills when they’re needed to help someone. He’s a very stoic person in general and takes things very seriously. I’m sure that comes across as “boring” to some people, but he’s a ninja who’s hardcore into being a ninja, so that’s cool with me.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite game to play online?

I can never get into console games online. For the PC though any Blizzard game is mentionable here, pretty much. Or League of Legends. I'd say Starcraft just because online added the most to that one (and wasn't mandatory like League of Legends or Diablo 3)

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Final Fantasy Tactics moment?

I think you nailed it, actually. Large part of the reason I like Algus so much in fact. The other reason being his amazing lines but yeah.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite fighting game character?

Dan "The Man" Hibiki, probably, although largely from Puzzle Fighter. But I dunno though after I play SC5 Tira might take it.

Also I don't know what's more offensive you disliking dive kicks or you disliking Juri. Probably the latter but jeez.

Favorite fighting game character is... does MVC count? If so probably like Dante or Zero. If that doesn't count, let's go with Johnny Cage.

Favorite game to play online is definitely Uncharted. The vertical element just adds so much to the online. I love it.

Yeah, I'll count crossovers like Marvel vs. Capcom, even if the character isn't originally a fighter.

26. Metal Gear Solid
external image

My first experience with Metal Gear Solid wasn’t until 2004, and believe it or not, it was a GameFAQs Contest match that prodded me into buying it. The match was Frog vs. Liquid Snake, and even though Liquid lost, it was so close and we all thought CT characters other than Crono were so strong back in those days (LOL Magus), so I finally decided I needed to check this game out and see what all the hype was about. I’m actually glad that our reasoning about CT characters was fallacious because first of all, it got me to play MGS sooner than I may have otherwise (if I would have at all), and second but unrelated to this list, it resulted in many hilarious contest moments in the coming years, with Knuckles > Magus being the best.

Anyway, I’m getting off topic here. The point is that I was finally playing Metal Gear Solid. The briefing videos where Campbell talks to Snake about the mission got me even more excited to play this game. Unfortunately, I got stalled in the very first area of the game for what felt like 30 minutes to an hour. To this day, I still believe that if you can get past the first area of MGS1, you can handle anything else the entire series throws at you (on Normal, anyway. I can’t speak for the higher difficulties). I’m not saying I was an expert on MGS after completing that area because I’m still pretty bad at the game and I die a lot even to this day when I play the games, but it did a good job of preparing you for what was ahead with the stealth elements.

Well, I’m rambling again. Let’s tackle what I love about MGS1 proper. First of all, Solid Snake is awesome. Avid Snake fans get angry at me when I say this for some reason, but the main reason I liked him so much as I was playing was because he reminded me so much of Squall. I’m not saying it’s a perfect resemblance or anything because they are obviously different in some ways, but it was big enough for me to notice it. Snake’s a loner by nature who doesn’t like to rely on others to get things done, but over the course of the game, he is slowly changed by the impulsive and overeager girl’s personality, with the tipping point being when she faces a life-or-death situation, with Snake helpless to do anything about it (and he does it in a matter of hours, but no one criticizes him for “falling in love too fast and that’s not realistic!”). And yes, I am oversimplifying things while overlooking the clear differences, but again, this is just to explain that there was a similarity between Squall and Snake that I saw that made me like him.

Another big reason MGS1 is awesome is the cast of villains. FOXHOUND might be the best collective pairing of villains in any video game. They’re all pretty great (except for Decoy Octopus, I guess, but he never really got a fair shot). They all had some awesome and fairly unique boss fights for their time. I know everyone raves over Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf, but I think my personal favorite boss fight in MGS1 is the battle with the Hind, simply because of the atmosphere of the fight. It’s so good. The Codec contacts are also really great, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who spends a lot of time calling the Codec to try to get all the conversations (and for the record, Mei Ling is totally better without the accent. Her Chinese accent is bad. Anyone who says it’s “unrealistic” for Mei Ling not to have an accent apparently hasn’t spent a lot of time interacting with American-born people of other ethnicities who grow up speaking English along with their mother tongue). MGS1 just has a very solid (LOL get it) cast of characters all around.

And that’s without even mentioning the plot! Metal Gear Solid is filled with awesome moments, twists and turns, and great interaction between the characters, especially Snake/Campbell and Solid/Liquid. There was one moment in particular that elevated the game from “really good” to “Holy crap this game is awesome I have to go out and get MGS2 as soon as I finish this game,” but since it’s showing up later on in the Moments list, I won’t mention the specifics of it here and now. Such a good game.

And there's one of the two games I was debating between for my next playthrough once I've played through Ico twice (since I'm enjoying that game so much). However, right now I'm tempted to stick with Shadow of the Colossus instead.

So yeah, I was debating between SOTC and MGS, but since I'm enjoying Ico so much and my younger brother already started SOTC, it looks like it's going to be that.

The number of times FFXII shows up as an answer to a question it has no business being an answer to is becoming disconcerting.
