I guess the Great Cave Offensive was fun after all. I played the original KSS like last weekend because I got it off Club Nintendo. But overall I prefer the Kirby game that sticks to the basic platforming. The reason GCO was my top KSS was because all the straight platforming sections were a little too bite sized. Dream Land 2 and Adventure all the way.
Bonus Question: Which game in Kirby Super Star is your favorite?
Probably Great Cave Offensive. Only collectathon type thing I've ever enjoyed-- mostly cause getting the chests wasn't so much about finding them as much as figuring out how to get them.
Arena is kinda fun too as it's one of the only Kirby games that exists that's possible to make anything resembling difficult (if you put the right limitations on yourself, anyway)
Wasn't as big on Milky Way Wishes because I felt that picking your skill at whim kinda took away a lot of the charm of Kirby's powers in that you gotta find the right enemy/suck them up/hold onto it to use a cool ability.

We discussed a Shadow Hearts moment earlier on the list which leads into this one. When Yuri tried to fuse with the Seraphic Radiance and failed, he essentially lost his sense of identity and became a broken man. He flew off to a castle in Europe, where he was eventually found by Alice and Zhuzhen, but he didnt recognize them because his soul had retreated within himself and was trying to disappear, fearful of what would happen if the Seraphic Radiance was unleashed again.
After Alice and company manage to tame Yuri in the castle, she decides to venture into his soul to see if she cant find some way to save him. She encounters the four masks in the graveyard, and I was honestly pretty surprised when she said that she loved Yuri when they asked her. It seems like in most RPGs, the characters cant admit they love each other until the end of the game! So it was kind of nice to see Alice being so honest about her feelings for him.
Once Alice goes inside, she finds Yuri digging his own grave under the orders of Fox-Face, who had tormented him mentally at different points in the game. Yuri is clearly unstable, as he seems to think Fox-Face is his father and Alice is his mother, and hes oblivious to the conversation the two of them have as he continues to dig. Fox-Face basically tells Alice all the stuff I mentioned about Yuri in the first paragraph about his fears, but she refuses to accept it. She believes he can overcome it, and her faith eventually frustrates Fox-Face so much that he punches her, which is another thing I was pretty surprised to see depicted in a video game: A grown man punching a woman in the face.
When Yuri sees that, he slowly begins coming back to reality, with Alices help motivating him along the way. I love it when Fox-Face goes in to punch him and Yuri just sort of casually kicks him and knocks him for a loop. Hes such a boss when he wants to be. I love this scene to see him face his fear of being a Harmonixer and finally standing up to Fox-Face, which was really a representation of his fear and self-doubt. And thats what makes Yuri so great. Sometimes he gets knocked down, but he always gets back up better than ever and owns faces along the way. Even his Harmonixer transformation animation changes after this scene. Before this scene, Yuri screams in agony as if fighting the transformation, like hes afraid of it (which Fox-Face alludes to during the scene). Afterward, Yuri simply swings his arm down, says, Hmph, and transforms like its nothing. I know it sounds silly when it comes to something small like this, but I totally marked out the first time I saw that new transformation scene. I knew I was a Yuri Hyuga fanboy from that moment on.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite Character overcomes his inner demons moment in a game?
Kind of a strange question, maybe, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Just be careful about spoilers!
Ive gotta say this up front. Fighting game stories can sometimes be amazing for all the wrong reasons, and Mortal Kombat might be the king in that department. Mortal Kombat comes up with crazy (krazy?) stuff like Raiden sending a message to himself in the past to try to change history so it doesnt end up with Shao Kahn winning, and the plot of the most recent MK game is Raiden failing spectacularly at every turn trying to change history. One of the things that was changed in this alternate storyline was Sub-Zero being the one who was captured and turned into a cyborg by the Lin Kuei instead of Smoke like it was originally, which was actually kinda cool as long as the change isnt permanent. Im not even sure what Midways going to do with the series after that.
Anyway, back on topic, Sub-Zeros always been my favorite Mortal Kombat character (kharakter?). When youre a kid, its for simplistic reasons like hes a blue ninja and freezing people is cool (literally). When youre an adult the reasons really arent that much more complex. I still think he has an awesome design. Sub-Zeros still fun to play as with all of his ice moves. Granted, I havent actually played a Mortal Kombat game since MK4 because of how bad every game since then supposedly has been, but Id like to check out the most recent one sometime because I hear its much better. I still enjoy playing around with MK2 every once in a great while, and Sub-Zero is my character of choice there.
I also enjoy Sub-Zeros rivalry with Scorpion. Well, I suppose I need to clarify here because there are two men named Sub-Zero in the series, both are brothers. The older one was killed by Scorpion in the original Mortal Kombat and became Noob Saibot. The younger one is the guy whos been known as Sub-Zero ever since, and hes the one Im referring to here. The original plot line was supposed to be Scorpion agrees to be the younger Sub-Zeros protector as penance for killing his brother, but that detail was dropped over time. Now they simply agree not to go after each other, although they have occasionally worked together for common goals, kinda like Spider-Man and Venom were for a long time. I do like how Subby and Scorpion were willing to put aside their clan rivalries for the sake of the greater good though. Its an interesting dynamic.
Sub-Zero also has a pretty good rivalry with his older brother after he becomes Noob Saibot. The two of them hold different ideals, so Noob has no problems becoming a servant of the Netherrealm to suit his own purposes and continue to roam about freely. He holds to the more traditional ideals of the Lin Kuei, wanting to use their power to destroy their foes. The younger Sub-Zero is more of an idealist, who believes the clan should use their power to help and protect people, which Noob Saibot scoffs at and says hes not worthy to bear the name or uniform of Sub-Zero for believing such nonsense. At that point, they have a neat exchange, where Noob tells him, We share blood. We are not brothers, and Sub-Zero responds with, Then I will not regret your defeat. Its nothing deep or profound, but I do like how he tries to stand against the long-held traditions of his clan to bring about a good, lasting change. He ends up being branded as a traitor at first, but hes eventually able to reclaim his honor and become Grandmaster, which is cool.
So yeah, thats about it. Sub-Zeros a pretty cool dude (LOL get it?). He has a great design, and some fun moves to use. Freezing people in their place and walking up to them to deal out some punishment while theyre completely helpless to do anything about it is a great feeling. Sub-Zero also has some interesting rivalries with other characters in the series, and he fights the good fight for change among his own culture. What a respectable fellow.
Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Mortal Kombat character?
(Expecting lots of 'ewww Mortal Kombat is gross' responses here!)

"The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..."
Oh right, and Sub-Zero was pretty awesome in the original Mortal Kombat movie, although that was the older brother in that one. Younger brother shows up for 2 seconds in Armageddon and is never seen again, like every character in that movie who isn't Liu Kang, Kitana, or Shao Kahn.
What is your favorite Character overcomes his inner demons moment in a game?
Uhhh... dunno. I like when characters improve themselves and overcome their flaws as a general rule but I can't think of any specific moments that really resonated with me enough to mention. It's usually something that improves a character but doesn't necessarily make for a good moment in and of itself, I guess? I guess... if I had to name one... FF4 Spoilers lol Cecil fighting his reflection to become a paladin was cool. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm of the camp that Cecil didn't really overcome any demons in that game and that all of his character development happened pre-game but that's what the story tries to feed you there as what he's doing and the scene is cool as a scene.. Feel like I should be able to do better than that but eh.
Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Mortal Kombat character?
Johnny Cage. If we limit to ninja, Scorpion. No reason we'd do that, but I just wanted to rep Scorpion > Sub-Zero. (Actually Sub-Zero might be my least favorite ninja this side of Khameleon to be honest <_< )
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
I actually like them all though. Well, not Khameleon but what I mean to say is I don't dislike Sub-Zero. Recent games really helped flesh out the lot of them a bit to the point where it isn't "I'M THE ORANGE ONE"

Granted, I havent actually played a Mortal Kombat game since MK4 because of how bad every game since then supposedly has been, but Id like to check out the most recent one sometime because I hear its much better.
Yeah, you really should just skip right to MK9 as it's the only MK game post-MK4 that's worth playing. Anyways, my favorite character is Sonya because I like her playstyle. Also, boobs.
My least favorite character is Raiden by far. He's incomprehensibly bad in MK9's story and a pain in the ass to fight against.

Thanks, Leon, for bringing us together.

23. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a big part of my childhood growing up. The first Ninja Turtles movie is the first movie I remember going to the theater to watch (and its still pretty great today, in fact!). I watched the cartoon show all the time, and I had tons of TMNT toys. And of course, I loved the video games. The NES ones were pretty tough for me as a little kid, so I ended up using a Game Genie to help me beat them. Turtles in Time wasnt so difficult to require a Game Genie. Plus, I used to play multiplayer with my cousins, which was a lot of fun. Of course, we had to argue over who got to be Leonardo (Yes, he was the favorite turtle for all of us, believe it or not), but hey, the rest are still cool, so it wasnt all bad.
Turtles in Time just oozes Ninja Turtle charm. Its hard not to like this game if youre a fan of TMNT at all, or if youre a fan of beat-em-ups. If youre a fan of both, then this is the game for you! Its got some classic stages and villains, and the levels are fun and varied. The enemy AI is a bit lacking at times, at least with Foot Soldiers, and there are a lot of those things. The combat is fun, of course. I love being able to throw enemies into the screen. That was a great touch. The bosses can be pretty difficult, despite having fairly predictable patterns. They usually attack frequently and fast, so it makes it pretty hard. Slash was always the boss I had the hardest time with, but I remember beating him without losing a single life the last time I played the game. It was a triumphant moment for me.
I think just about all the levels in Turtles in Time are pretty fun, and theyre pretty memorable, too. The graphics are very colorful and well done. I think my favorite level was the pirate ship, but there were several good ones. The little sound bytes (MY TOE TOE! PIZZA TIME!) as well as the announcer (BIG APPLE 3 A.M.) gave the game a little extra charm as well. Its a shame that the Re-Shelled remake didnt turn out so well. It wouldve been awesome to re-experience the game in a new generation, but alas, it was not meant to be. Probably the one downside to Turtles in Time was that it was so short, but at the same time, it probably contributed to its replayability because we could beat the game quickly, pick different turtles, and go at it again.
Before I conclude this writeup, Id like to give a shoutout to Hyperstone Heist, which was basically the Genesis version of Turtles in Time. It had entirely different levels and bosses and stuff for the most part, but there were only like five levels total (although most of them were much longer than the average Turtles in Time level). It was also more difficult because the random enemy AI was more aggressive. Turtles in Time is better, but Hyperstone Heist is a good game in its own right and worth playing.
Bonus Question: How would you rank the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
(Correct answer is Leo > Mike > Don > Raph, for the record)

Guess who I am! http://gifsoup.com/webroot/animatedgifs3/1345748_o.gif
TMNT3 Manhattan Project > TMNT2 Arcade Game > Turtles in Time (overrated a bit-- still good though)
Also Kitana's sexier than Mileena even forgetting the teeth. Bladed fans are hot guys. ... what, you're saying I can't be attracted to a woman for the weapon she uses?
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Man don't give me that. Fans are freakin... classy... and seductive... and stuff. You can do rad dances and be all coy like and cover your face and go tee hee~
Put it in a different way if you knew a woman who chose to fight with a board with a nail sticking out of it you're telling me that wouldn't be a turnoff? Don't lie, now.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Well, sure. I probably wouldn't be repulsed by a woman fighting with much of anything aside from a board with a nail. Maybe a giant club. But there are definitely tiers. Whips and war fans are up top. More "brutish" weapons like clubs and axes down. Of course, a lot of this is in technique, too-- some chick taking a thug approach and crudely stabbing with a knife is a lot less hot than someone who can do tricks and toss knives and stuff. Now to be fair to Mileena Sais aren't shabby themselves. Everyone loves Elektra after all.
Thank goodness someone else here realizes that your choice of weapon contributes to your image which contributes to how attractive you are.
I was beginning to think I was surrounded by plebeians ignorant of the finer points of combat fashion.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Well with fists it's all technique and so Tifa's a mixed bag. She's got stuff that has finesse and such like somersault, and then she's got stuff where she just manhandles people like meteodive. In some ways fighting like an ogre while clearly having the grace to do otherwise is hot though. I'd put her above the likes of Sakura or Rainbow Mika who show no grace to speak of but below the likes of Chun Li and Cammy who do more flippy stuff and cuts the clumsy/brutish stuff out of their repertoire. Though they aren't super graceful or anything either despite flips and flips and flips so they're pretty mid tier on the weapon fashion scale-- if you want the queen of sexy unarmed fighting you go with Juri. *ducks*
