Elective Mode - IMPORTANT

Elective Mode is the ability to change which skills go onto which hotkey and, much more importantly, allows the player to select more than one skill from an assigned category for use at the same time. okay, water maps weren't as bad as i initially thought. got through them now without too much trouble and i'm about to do the desolate sands. currently at 15k damage (much of which is from attack speed x_x), 200 resists, 2300 armor (3800 with energy armor).

i haven't played with diablo 2 but i'm through most of a2 inferno and haven't felt compelled to use the ah yet so i can't say i agree with that article. water map lag aside, the game has actually been at its most fun when everything can kill me easily.

Probably A. But not entirely for the reasons in that article. I've only used the AH three times so it's not one of those things that are necessarily required if you're willing to grind a bit or are patient enough to take way longer than you should (I'm neither).

The reasons are: 1. Leveling doesn't stop at a level that you can attain just by beating the game normally, so you always feel like you're advancing. 2. You got more "cool" items. It's not even about use here, it's about "hey that item is green and it's part of a set how awesome" or "hey that item is gold it's rare!" even if it sucked. I've found a grand total of two legendaries and no sets so... yeah.

Yeah after some thought I decided I don't really like the auction house. It just isn't fun. It's convenient but those aren't the same thing.

I don't think you understand how utterly broken the current system is.

Before, I was basically giving away squares on request because there was no way a flawless square was worth 20k. Given that they aren't worth 20k, they aren't worth the combine cost, period. Not only do chest runs give good amounts of gems (you're assured two per resp. chest, IIRC), gems just overall have a high drop rate, esp. on elite mobs. Combined with marginal increases in stats compared to cost at perfect square and higher, that meant FSes were common as dirt. Which meant that square was just plain useless themselves because of a complete lack of a level requirement.

The literal only reason I was picking up squares at all was because I was fairly sure Bliz was going to fix it.

And that's not even going into how broken crafting is. I've got a recipe for a five factor 2H axe. The only better one is a 6 factor version of the same axe. It costs 130k to make. That's not even including the opportunity cost for breaking down gear either. It's the equivalent of an act 2 axe. However, because you can get act 3/4 weaponry dirt cheap because they're easy as **** to farm, this means you basically 3 different high rolled factors on there to get decent DPS. With only 4-6 factors, it's unfortunately unlikely to happen, so you also never craft weapons.

The only thing you'd ever want to craft is armor and even then, it's pretty dicey at current cost, IMO. (though you are at least able to generate something that could possibly be considered "best armor piece in the game" right now).

TBH, I think Blizzard should have made it so the best items in the game have to be crafted (same as gems). You can easily justify almost any cost if it will end up making the best item in the game with a good enough roll. It's the only way to get any late game crafting going. (which is the only real way to make gold ever worth something because it's easily farmed at no risk)

they retooled a lot of the game late last year and don't even have PvP bare bones ready. I'm surprised things are actually this good!

Notice in all of the ability tooltips that ability damage is based off of your weapon, for example, poison dart hits do damage equal to exactly 100% of your weapon damage and then 60% additional damage over time. If you don't have advanced tooltips on, hold control to see such details. The actual type of your weapon does not seem to come in to play ever (although if you don't have enough resources to use poison darts, you'll swing your weapon)

Hmm. I figured as much. I noticed there was a damage increase when I got a better weapon, but I can't say I don't miss auto-attacks... I hope fighting gets more exciting later on.

Just bought the game a few days ago as well (maining a male witch doctor, but I've also played a bit with a female demon hunter). WD sucks until he gets his Gargantuan (level 19 or so) - afterwards, it's great fun. Just got past Act 2.

Mortar for me. Every elite was mortaring my sorry ***, to the extent I was seriously considering adding Preparation to my line-up for Smoke Screen. I'm not addicted to SS like some DHs are -- I keep it for getting out of jail -- but Vault isn't terribly useful against mortars.


As for the article, A. Maybe not the final conclusion that D2 players will stay and newer players will leave, but agree with the baby carrots issue.

okay, i think inferno belial phase 2 just isn't possible at my current stats. i take down -maybe- 10% of his life before the serpents start spawning and then i'm done shortly after. even phase 1 is a struggle because the serpents appear much faster than i can kill them and i keep getting bad spawns in the corner i'm in. had to use illusionist to repeatedly teleport from corner to corner while slowing with blizzard.

anyone have suggestions for a better setup? or do i just need to improve my gear

I recommend Fire Bolts on left click, Arcane Hydra on right. And then survival skills to taste.

hm, i survived for a good amount of time with that (plus the experience of past attempts), but once it gets to phase 2 i have to deal with the serpents endlessly and can't damage belial. except for incidental damage from the hydra, i guess, but fire bolts isn't damaging him at all because i'm using it on the minions. and i can kite those back and forth for a while but eventually i just get overwhelmed.

going to try spells that can hit both targets at once but with arcane power costs i'm not optimistic

You could run that passive where you get 5 charges and then your next non signature spell does an increased 75% damage.

Then every time you have 5 charges you could arrange to use your wave of force near belial? The extra 75% damage on those waves is pretty significant.

ANd if you are building stacks fast enough then you can have a +75% hydra on the ground as well and still use the +75% wave of forces.


But you're totally going to have to gear up <_<

Also there is the lightning spell that goes through everything, so there would be no cost, but it's pretty weak. (Electrocute-Lightning Blast). Then all you would have to do is line up so it hits through both...

Which is what I love about Fire Bolts. It's so strong against belial phase 3 because you can throw down the hydra, do your run thing, but every time you get an auto attack off all 3 of the fire bolts will hit for 137% damage each.

That's a heck of a lot more than the 80% damage that electrocute would be doing per attack.


But electrocute SEEMS to have a stronger rate of fire, which is strange to me because I thought rate of fire on spells was supposed to be based on attack speed. But even 2 80% attacks would deal as much as a single fire bolt.

Do serpents appear with the second form of Belial on Inferno? Or is that considered "phase 3"?

yeah sorry i'm referring to his first form (phase 1 being the part with just serpents). serpents on phase 3 would be pretty crazy!

also i gave up for the moment. either going to do runs now or play another character until 1.03 so drops are better

oh man got phase 2 down 35% with a glass cannon build using sparkflint/force weapon/improved archon. this might be workable. maybe. does anyone know exactly when phase 3 starts? i know it's in the 40-60% health range

Yeah you need a bit more DPS HGR. I'm at 17k DPS on my WD in Inferno and I feel like I should at least be at 25k for Act 2.

Thankfully weapon prices are dropping a ton because of people finding better and better ones. You can probably get an 800DPS one hander for right around 100k and a good offhand for less and boost your DPS to at least 20k.

reached 20k by taking glass cannon and making some equipment changes from my stash, which also dropped me to 115 resist all/26k health but i'm completely reliant on force armor anyway so.

got him down to 40% of his lifebar this time. this is pretty fun but it is not good for my gold supply

got to phase 3!

and, uh, died on the very first first attack because 1) i was nervous and 2) he just happened to aim right where i was walking. how embarrassing.

Finally made it to 60. Bought a crossbow that doubled my DPS to 40k (with sharpshooter) for under 100k. Not a bad deal to start out with.
