Yeah, I think it's pretty important to leave the country every once in a while. Despite what variation you think there is among different regions in your own country, it pales in comparison to experiencing cultures in different parts of the world.

And if it's time for stealth brags already... United States, England, Ghana, Togo, Germany, Austria, Poland.

Travel, people! :)

At least Europe has it much easier when it comes to traveling to other countries. People in most European countries can simply use an ID card to travel to another country. None of this passport or visa stuff at all.

If I ever wanted to travel to countries in Europe, I would need a passport and most likely a visa as well.

I voted for "Just one, that's as far as I've been" because I have been to Canada, but only the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. It doesn't change the fact that I was actually on Canadian soil.

What's important is different for everybody. Personally I think traveling is more important than most things people spend money on... also not expensive if you're looking at the amount of time there is between trips. Generally speaking, I think staying comfortable in your own little routine and not trying new things is just about the worst thing you can possibly do in life. Anyone is free to disagree, but that's just how I see it.

Only Canada. I'm going to be in Berlin over New Year's though, and plan to travel around while I'm there. It'll be interesting to see the culture first hand. It was a big enough shock this year when I took my first trips out of the general Cascadia region. Being in Topeka, Kansas for a few days gave me a good understanding of where so many (mostly negative) stereotypes of Americans come from.

Kind of a broad topic, but there's a lot in there. I mean, for one, what is it about being a tourist somewhere for a weekend or a week that is lifechanging? Not saying it can't be, but I don't think it necessarily would be, at least not in a meaningful changing way.

Then there's a lot of generalization, saying people shouldn't be in a routine. Sure, a routine can be a boring life, but what is it about taking a trip to another country that makes a real change to that? It doesn't effect how the majority of your time is spent wherever home is. Your routine will be your routine whether you took a vacation somewhere or not.

Pretty much, I think this is just another case of people kind of using their particular interest, in this case traveling abroad, to say other people are missing something compared to them. When, in reality, everybody is doing all sorts of things, and nothing about this interest in particular makes it, in my humble opinion, especially noteworthy as a must. Whatever part of life traveling fills for you is filled in countless different ways for different people.

Well, I think people are generally only qualified to speak on things that they have experienced or observed for themselves, and as such I'm using my experience traveling to say that it's an important thing that people should do. I know people that have went places and not enjoyed the experience at all, wishing that they just stayed at home and did the usual for a couple of weeks instead. I'm not saying this never happens. What I personally think is important about getting out of your routine is even a broader topic, and to put it shortly, it's about being humbled. I think that doing the same thing, hanging out with the same people, eating the same foods, watching the same types of movies, etc. causes people to think they "know" things. "I know what I like, and that's that. I don't need to try new things."

I'm sure a lot of people are happy living this way, and that's fine. But in my personal opinion is that it's a terrible way to live. I think people should be open to trying different things and I believe it's very important to be humbled, and reminded that there is a lot you don't know, or can't know about the world, or even yourself without actually doing it.

Traveling is just a great way to try a bunch of different things at the same time. You're going to meet a bunch of people that act completely different than anyone you know or have different views than the people you normally spend time with because they grew up in a different culture. You'll probably try a few new activities or foods that aren't popular where you're originally from, and you're going to see cities or landscapes that are vastly different than the ones you've experienced at home. It's not necessarily about traveling, it's about getting out of your comfort zone.

I think the short version of my whole thing here, is I'm all about how everything is different for everyone, and when people try to tell other people various things about importance and living it comes across as condescending, like their view of things is more important.

My point is, I don't doubt that traveling is important to you, but that doesn't make it important for everyone. And sure, I haven't traveled outside of USA, but I've traveled, and regardless I disagree with the idea you propose that only you can comment on the merits of doing something because you've done it.

Somebody says "hey, lets all do coke, you can't say it's not good stuff if you haven't tried it", ha well hey he's not wrong. But it doesn't mean we should all do blow.

You acknowledge not everybody has a positive experience with traveling, and well again there are countless, countless ways to get out of your comfort zone and try new things without going across the globe.

It's cool to want to encourage other people to like what you like, but there's a point where it becomes a bit condescending and weird, and that's what I'm trying to say here, telling everybody they need to travel to experience life is, well, just not a universal truth for everyone.

It's all opinions. I literally said what's important is different for everyone. And in saying that you can only comment on what you've done, you took the wrong meaning of what I was trying to say. I meant that in talking about anything, I can only express opinions with my own experience. Meaning that I can attest to the ways that traveling in this case, has benefit me personally, and in speaking about travel I'm assuming that others would experience things in a similar way. Kind of like if I'm telling somebody about eating a great burrito, I'm going to talk about assuming that they would taste experience the taste in a way similar to how I did, rather than qualifying the statement by saying "You may think it's nothing special at all, but if you're anything like me, you're going to love this burrito". Not everyone is the same, but if I didn't think most people would benefit by having these experiences, I wouldn't be suggesting them.

I don't really care if anyone travels or not, but I'd consider myself much worse off if I had never left Canada and my only experience with other cultures had come from TV and movies. If that sounds condescending, then I guess it is. It's just my view.

Also, not sure if you know who you're talking to, but using a drug analogy to show that trying new things isn't always good is pretty much the worst possible example... although I admit few people will claim that cocaine has improved their lives.

We all know coke is good stuff, though I don't plan to try it, I wasn't judging one way or the other. I'm a fan of Hunter S like anybody else, just saying what's important to him isn't the same for everybody else, etc.

And yes, if you told your friends had to try a burrito to LIVE, I'd say hey that guy doesn't need to try that burrito if he doesn't want to. Traveling, it's a thing, ha yeah I think we've pretty much articulated our views here.

Anyone who's traveled at all should get a high five. As for those who haven't... well I wouldn't begrudge anyone for not having the money to, but I highly recommend traveling one day when you get the time and money to do so.

I've been to Italy in my youth(3-8), I enjoyed it greatly. Hoping to visit again one day. Only problems I remember were the pollution and the lack of traffic law enforcement.
