3DS comes with what, a 2 gig SD card? That's decent storage for a handheld, and upgradable. I could certainly see them giving the Wii U an actual hard drive.

I wonder how big their disks will be. they'll be at least 8gb to keep parity with the current gen, and probably bigger to futureproof.

then again, futureproofing has failed them miserably since the SNES, especially the Gamecube

8gb hard drives are crazy then. not all games will be 25gb but you need to be able to fit more than 1 or 2 games on a hard drive. 60 gig is the absolute minimum they could get away with.

it's possible they'll try on a similar style to the Arcade/Elite model the 360 runs now. you can buy the base Wii U with whatever internal memory it has. it can do everything that's needed out the door - online, play games you buy, etc. the basic set. that'd carry 8GB. or you can go with the premium version which has the hard drive and some kind of bonus to it, like a pack-in Wii U Sports within the HDD. and that'd carry 120.

that'd also appeal to the cheap nintendo vs. expensive nintendo issue they're facing: field the former at 270, the latter at 350.

only 8GB out of the box (to keep costs low) but it supports external HDDs

That's pretty bad considering the 3DS had 2 GB of internal memory, not counting the 2 GB SD card that came with it. I think the Wii U should have at least 32 GB of internal memory, which should be sufficient enough for DLC. Although more memory will be required to support full digital downloads of games.

I don't see how Nintendo can claim competition between retailers will drive prices down below what we'd have if they just removed the completely unnecessary middleman who by definition raises the price and made the big wholesale arrow point directly to the consumer. What do you need a retailer for with digital distribution?

It's not like removing the retailer removes competition; that competition is just between different studios then. But by including the retailer, you just add a middleman that wants a cut and adds it onto the price for no other benefit (since digital distribution is not any harder to do without a retailer).

...the middleman is the person who knows the market best, will take occasional losses, have sales, understand what the prices SHOULD be, and is the best one to manage it as a result of that. yes, he'll want a cut. no, it shouldn't be anything too crazy because it's a digital release.

one needs to take a look at how PCs go to understand quite clearly that no, the middle man is actually the important part of why that model works. you can also look at sony and microsoft as examples of why what you suggested doesn't work as well.

As you know, all of my remarks and explanations on our digital business are kept and made available for public viewing on our IR site inside Nintendo’s official website. Unfortunately, as some people seem to have a misunderstanding, I would like to once again sum up my comments here. First, we clearly distinguish digital distribution of packaged software from add-on content and, when it comes to making packaged software digitally available, we do not intend to offer any products that the consumers deem incomplete. Second, we sell add-on content so that the consumers can play a software title for even longer and on a deeper level and, when we sell this add-on content, we are making a proposal to consumers to pay for the content our developers have additionally created. In other words, as we have repeatedly confirmed, Nintendo has never conducted and will never conduct what is now widely known (in Japan) as a “gacha-type charging business” (capsule toy vending machine business), which asks consumers to pay money without knowing what kind of item shall emerge as a result of their payment, even if such a business model might temporarily yield high profitability. Nintendo does not believe such a business model can establish long-lasting relationships with our consumers. We hope that everyone understands our policy, and we will continue to make efforts to avoid such misunderstandings as, “the next ‘Animal Crossing’ might be a game which relies upon add-on content sales.”

The model is describing their retail strategy, and they are explaining that their digital distribution will act as a retailer in that it will compete with retailers directly. Because Nintendo isn't forcing retailers to set the games at a certain price, then theoretically the retailers can sell games for cheaper than $60 if they want, and then if Nintendo wants people to buy their games digitally, they will have to respond to the market and reduce the price on their eShop. They are explaining how their digital distribution model is a good thing as it will allow for a competitive market that will benefit consumers.

I don't think he's necessarily saying Animal Crossing won't have add-on content sales period, but that they aren't just going to use AC DLC as a way to milk money out of people... I mean they might not have it, but I don't think they really declined it.

Either way, they don't want to rip people off with DLC and get a bad reputation like Capcom, which is really great to hear.

$400 absolute MINIMUM for this console. Nintendo has been dropping hints for like a year, that controller sure as hell doesn't look cheap, and with full games available for download on launch day, it'll need a fat hard drive. This won't be a $300 "everyman" machine. That won't exist next gen.

There's absolutely no way they charge that much. They were willing to sell the 3DS at a loss very quickly. And they had to. They're not gonna make the same mistake again.

Well you know how people freak out and think that racing games are going to be like 3 tracks and 2 cars and you have to buy everything else a la cart? It's probably along those lines, where Nintendo is sick of people acting like they're going to be treating their customers like drug addicts and releasing new furniture and bugs and stuff every month.

400 is the max I'd think. They want to establish a relationship with the typical gamer now, but I don't think they can overcharge for their console knowing that the big boys are coming in a year or two.

I had my first experience with Wii netplay earlier today and that was not pleasing

on the "color me skeptical" side though, I don't see how they can have fully downloadable retail games that also come on 25GB discs. gotta have a huge hard drive for that. also a 25GB download for one game sounds horrific for anyone not on the cutting edge of internet speed.
