It is, yeah.

What about the Prime sequels? I picked up the first two games at Gamestop's B2G1 sale yesterday.

The entire Prime trilogy is great. Play all of those. 2 is the weakest but still excellent.

As for 2D games, Super Metroid and Zero Mission are the best. But really, the whole series comes recommended. Some are better than others, but all are pretty good.

1 has the best level design easily. And considering the types of games they are, level design is really important. 2's is pretty good too, but only one area is on par with MP's levels. Plus it has the Dark World, which can be a pain at times. 3 has by far the weakest level design, and kinda gets rid of the feeling of isolation. I honestly think 3 is the worst by a large margin, but it's still great. It does however have the best controls. I'd recommend the Trilogy collection on the Wii if you can find it for a reasonable price.

Think I'll skip pinball... heh. Thanks, Genius. (Or Wazzup. Not sure which to address you by. I'd imagine the former sounds better to you!)

Yeah, I'd think level design is crucial to this franchise. Looking forward to trying 'em all out regardless.

What makes the Trilogy Collection so ace, anyway, just the improved controls for 1 and 2? Did they polish the two games up in any other noticeable way?

MP1 is like SM64. The sequels did a lot of things better, but because it was the first to transition a sacred 2D franchise into 3D, it is immune to criticism.

That being said, I can explain a lot of things wrong with MP1, mostly dealing with the level design. MP2 has MUCH better level design, imo. And MP3 gets points for being the only Wii game that doesn't just use motion well, but uses motion to make its controls BETTER than a regular control could.

I really like Fusion. It's more linear than most Metroids, but it makes up for it by feeling survival horror-ish with the way the main bad guy is always looming to pop up and kill you

I love every single Metroid game, but you can avoid the NES one.

2 is great, Super is one of the best games ever, Prime 1's one of the best 3D games ever, P2 and P3 are a little lacking compared to it. Hunters was good back in the day, but if anyone's still playing it online, I'd be surprised. The actual story for it is kinda boring.

Fusion is a bit underrated IMO, and Zero Mission completely replaces 1 by so much. Other M is very hit or miss for people. I liked it and I think you should at least give it a try.

Fusion has waay too much unskippable text that you have to sit through. Linearity is fine and I don't have a problem with that, but they wrote the story in such a way that it requires you to recieve numerous text-based orders and status updates before you can move on.

Yeah, in my opinion, starting with Super and Prime (in either order) is the way to go. Those are both 10/10 games. It's a great series but everything else can be hit-or-miss, Super and Prime are masterpieces.

MP1 > MP3 >= MP2, but they're all great.

MP1 has great atmosphere and level design - and no glaring weakness. MP2 seems a bit more artificial, and the dark world can be a pain, but the gameplay's still top notch and it's a bit more challenging than the first (so if you like that, that's a good thing). MP3 indeed gets rid of the feeling of isolation, and the atmosphere's not incredible, but once you get past the first main 'level', it gets really good. And as other people have said, the controls are a great addition.

Go with what transience suggested. If you like 2D better (think Castlevania without the levelling system), start with Super Metroid. If you're more of a 3D guy, start with Prime 1.

EDIT: And don't play Other M. Fairly lacklustre gameplay-wise, and the plot/characters are abysmal.

IMO the 2D Metroids don't control all that well and are pretty easily outclassed by the similar Castlevania games in terms of gameplay. They still have pretty great atmosphere and music, etc, but time has probably taken its toll on those aspects.

Prime is absolutely f***ing amazing though and has an amazing world.
