I would just like to echo the sentiment that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are among the best games of all time.

Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are great, and the original Metroid catches too much hate. I've also enjoyed the little bit I've played of Metroid: Zero Mission.

original metroid isn't bad per se, there's just little reason to play it with zero mission existing. while I think ZM failed in emulating super, it is a big improvement on the original, the only thing that it really did worse to me was butchering the norfair music by trying to make it epic like super metroid's instead of quirky like the original, or in gameplay I guess the ZSS part but that's basically irrelevant and extra anyway

There really wasn't a Metroid formula to tamper with. Metroid 1 you could literally go anywhere at any time and wasn't reliant on the 'get upgrade, access new area' formula of Super Metroid.

Uh, that's not true. Unless Zero Mission was way changed from Metroid 1, there was definitely the 'get upgrade, go to new area' formula. There might have been fewer "key" items, but it was still centered around that.

Fusion made it so you have to get to a certain designated point in the story so that the computer would let you go to a new area. That was annoying.

But my biggest complaint about Fusion is that they killed the infinite wall jump. And maybe the infinite bomb jump as well? I don't remember, but definitely the wall jump. That stuff is my bread & butter for movement in 2D Metroids.

about time someone mentioned infinte wall jump

that and Nav Rooms are Fusion's only real negatives to me

I basically travel on walls more than ground in Super (joking exaggeration don't try respond to this seriously again)

infinite bomb jump is just as damaging and feels even worse since it's been there since the first game.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of the Metroid series. Too much backtracking and not having any clue what to do for me. That being said, I did enjoy Prime, although I never finished it.

Although if the other two Prime games are as focused and linear as tran says, maybe I should check them out.

you'd probably like corruption the most, echoes has plenty of backtracking and has the most convoluted topography of any of the games

not read any posts in this topic other than the OP's

super metroid is the greatest game ever and should be instantly played if you haven't already

metroid prime is also in my top 5 and a must play

prime 2-3 are also solid and worth a play through

Zero Mission was way changed from Metroid 1. In Metroid 1 all you need to get everywhere, and I mean everywhere, is the morph ball, bombs, missiles, and... uh... that might be it. Maybe ice beam. All of which is obtained in the first 5 or so minutes of playing. Have you played Metroid 1? Like, actually played it? You can go fight Ridley whenever, you can fight Kraid whenever, there is no sequence.

Formula doesn't imply that every game follows it to a T. Hell, considering that was only 3 games to the series and significant gaps between them (Metroid was 86, Metroid II was 91, Super Metroid was 94).

Formula is that "this is what Super Metroid did to make the series great and all subsequent games should follow the same method."

I think the "formula" that Fusion deviates from is the lack of text narrative in the previous games. Fusion is the first game where Samus actually talks with people and we see inside her head.
