That's obvious hyperbole, but it's true that porn warps people's ideas of sex.

The problem is that the author treats his audience (or potential porn-watchers, or whoever he's referring to here) as easily swayed idiots. His point was not that porn warps people's ideas of sex, but that it causes men to forget or ignore the aspects that comprise femininity except for sex. And it's a silly notion, insisting that men - especially those who have been in relationships with women - will somehow fail to recognize that women are more complicated than sex, because they watched too much pornography.

Keep in mind my argument isn't "most women hate facials", it's that porn alters perceptions and many people take things for granted.

It's okay if you want to do anal, what's not okay is going straight to it assuming the partner wants it.

Porn as an expectation warper can go both ways too, fyi. If porn were to be believed (because you know, there aren't intelligent human beings who can differentiate existing on this plane of reality) every male has a baby's arm clutching an apple for a dick.

So I didn't read the article or the topic because, lets be honest, it's 100 pages and that's way too long for my minimal attention span.

All I came in to say is in most video games/comics/television shows/whatever male objectification usually boils down to a power fantasy, while female objectification usually boils down to a sexual fantasy.

Aaaand I'm gone.

The least you could do is give me the courtesy of checking out the site before you make sweeping judgements. It's not anti-sex at all. Quite the opposite, actually.

I never said they preferred it, but my point is more that everyone is different and making the claim that facials are an uncommon creation of porn is totally out of whack with reality.

Anal is another thing entirely, really.

If no, why do you believe this is a serious enough problem to be worth talking about?

Pretty much 5% of the male population at this point :)

Still, it is true that all women prefer different things, but in that sense, there are sexual acts that are much more common on desired than others.

I mean, there are straight males that enjoy receiving anal penetration but I wouldn't hesitate to say that they represent a small minority. Once again, all I have on-hand is anecdotal evidence and it is possible that guys are in denial about this, but the same could be said of any sexual preference.

It's impossible to know a number, but it's true it has happened.

The objectification of sex is a serious problem. It can have negative emotional effects on men and women.

There are plenty of postive effects of porn, but the dehumanization and objectification themselves are in no way emotionally valuable.

Why are you placing such importance on dehumanization and objectification then? If it's on the whole a net positive, then why complain about porn in general? If you just want to remove the specific negative effects of dehumanization and objectification, then why complain about porn in general instead of trying to isolate the specific causes which give rise to those things?

It's been said before in this topic, but I'll say it again. Feminists complain about how women are steotyped to be sex objects, etc. I feel bad about myself because I'm not as cool or muscular or badass as Shepard and Ike and all those characters. Both genders have stereotypes, but the female ones are "bad."

From: Metal_DK | #053
Actually its just as bad. Its telling men that in order to be successful, you have to be a certain look (see, Redfield, Jim Raynor post brood war, most western game male protagonist honestly)

Actually, in many cases it's true.

How many teenage boys were surprised when they had trouble fitting it in the first time? How many were surprised the first time they came after 15 seconds? How many were surprised the first time the girl queefed?

@Touka

Oh, so you are talking about porn in general. Your use of pronouns threw me for a loop, and I wasn't really sure exactly what questions you were asking. It sounded like you wanted to know what positive emotional effects objectification has, which is kind of a weird question.

I don't remember making sweeping generalizations about pornography, if I did, it was in error. Since the beginning, my argument has been that porn warps perceptions and there should be a bigger emphasis on sex education, be it from parents or any education institution.

I'm okay with porn. In fact, I love it. But I think younger generations need to realize that there is a difference between real world sex and what goes on in porn. ExTha may think this is common sense, but I don't.

This is where I can agree with you whole heartedly. The whole sex education system needs a total revamp job that fits in more realistically with the current sexual climate in the world. Unfortunately with the major Christian influence throughout the west and elsewhere I don't see that happening.

But I think younger generations need to realize that there is a difference between real world sex and what goes on in porn. ExTha may think this is common sense, but I don't.

I think more effective sexual education would help this problem, because while I don't think it's as big a deal as you do, I will admit that it exists.

Women, don't like sexism? Don't play games.

No, I'm saying they should play them. And then threaten to stop playing them if what they want doesn't change. Free market, baby.

What they're doing now is complaining about games that women overwhelmingly don't play. So they're trying to change something that the target audience doesn't care about, so they can be slightly less offended by something that most of them will still not play. I think it's pretty s***ty to try and ruin stuff for other people because it offends you. Especially when you have no stake in it yourself.

I think soap operas are dumb. I think the men on there are unrealistic and obviously meant to appeal to women. So my reaction to that is "don't watch soap operas" not "be upset and try to get the soap opera industry to start casting ugly men." I could be right that soap operas are offensive, but who cares? I don't watch them.

When you're faced with competing demands from competing demographics, you have to make a choice. Either you appease the women by making games with ugly women and less violence and whatever, or you appease the men with boobs and blood. Guess which is more profitable?

Well, you can't do it immediately. But the core of his message is right in that IF women represented an equal market share as men did in gaming, their concerns would be treated just as seriously.

Well, it'll have an impact if they are committed to playing games because they like them. Because in that case if you offended half your playerbase, you'd probably find a way to make it right really quick. I agree that if women just picked up a few games and then complained, it wouldn't do much. They'd actually have to be video game players who regularly buy those kinds of games.
