X-0 would adequately wash the foul taste of X-2 from my mouth. But I'm not sure how much confidence I have in the writing schemes of Toriyama and Kitase 2.0

Well, it's like Crisis Core! The foundation of the plot is already laid for you!
Same thing with an FFVIII prequel!

Crisis Core went on too many convoluted tangents to really click for me but I respected its efforts. And I'm not saying I'd rather it uber-strictly adhered and just came across as boring either. There's just something about the execution as-is that really doesn't work for me.
Maybe it's the fact that I didn't find almost anyone outside of Zack, Aerith and Yuffie's cameos especially memorable. Although on the other hand I don't hate Genesis like a lot of folks do. /shrug
Probably had more to do with the symbolism being super heavy-handed, the punch from the "Five Years Ago" sections of FFVII feeling like it was sucked out and replaced with a cheap air filter when I 'learned' about the 'rest' of that stuff and the whole Angeal arc being weird.

Well yeah, Crisis Core had its fair share of problems, but the stuff that was already there before they made it was generally pretty good!

The last two Zeldas on the DS were so bad that I'm actually having a hard time getting hyped up about another one, even if it sounds like it'll go in an entirely different direction.
