Though it's cheaper on Amazon so I'd buy it from there obv. Unless there are better options posted here of course.

It's made it almost nine years now. It deserves to be put to rest.

Jack of all trades. But I don't do much if any PC gaming, so I don't need it to run games at Super Max settings or anything.

Alright, well the graphics card on the one you posted is mega balls, I'd look up some benchmarks for it and see if it can even handle some of what you might want to do with the laptop.

It apparently handles Skyrim on high according to reviews.

I need to be able to have my workplace mobile for school and work reasons though so desktop is a no go.
I just need a respectable set of hardware. I'm more of a software guy, which is why I was hoping the INTERNET could guide me in the right direction.

Something with an apu and a dedicated card if you want a jack that can last a good while. Amd is the king at this and won't be losing that crown to Intel anytime soon. Otherwise you're a month early. Intel releases an updated chip later this month. Ivy bridge is the name, replacing sandy bridge, and getting anything now would be a mistake as a result. Unless you pick a laptop with an apu anyway, that won't update until summer.

Actually I stand corrected, Intel releases Ivy bridge on the 23rd, but amd releases trinity on may 15. Both expect better processing and intel shouldn't be flat out terrible anymore, but amd will have some architecture from their current chips inside, making it possible that you'd be able to play on high for quite a lot. Especially with a discrete card to help it out, though obviously it'd have to be amd as well. Also expects double digit battery life when resting as well as low voltage. So yeah, wait a month. You'll have considerably better choices.

Clarifying, flat out terrible anymore is to their graphics. Apus bundle what's effectively a discrete card into the cpu and is amd tech that murders hard for all purpose machines. Intel has their own chips that can deliver some gaming ability, but it sucks really badly. General processing favors Intel usually and doubt that changes, though windows 8 will make it closer as amd's architecture favors the way 8 handles cores.

Well if you don't mind becoming obsolete in a month go for it! And if you don't mind paying twice as much for something that could be done for half the price on most tasks, go for the intel with an nvidia discrete card.

Even if you are gaming you are usually better off with an apu just for the sheer price. Light gaming mind you, but with the upcoming chip it looks like it can do pretty high level work too, after all it currently can run most modern games with medium settings. Intel can't even do civilization 5. Nvidia is a must if you go the intel route and want to play stuff made after 2008. That though does raise the price, not that it's an issue on this budget.
Photoshop does however warrent that kind of rig. This isn't used for that though. All purpose = amd in a month does trinity and will define that. Apus already do, but we have to see how they improved on the processing. Dedicated for gaming = unknown in a month because if it can crossfire better, a dedicated card plus the apu itself will murder everything. Dedicated for Photoshop = intel anything over amd. Dedicated to top of the line performance on a wide variety and not much concern for battery = intel with nvidia card. No gaming = intel. Gotta see benchmarks on the upcoming hd 4000 chip Ivy bridge has before we see how it handles. Also note that amd and their Apus already have usb 3.0, while intel will have that in 2 weeks with Ivy bridge. It makes a big difference, so if you go that route you STILL should wait.
