I kind of rate for both, but even at the time I wasn't huge on HL's single player (or the official multiplayer that came with the game, though I liked mods like Action Half-Life). I thought it started cool, but kinda fell apart halfway in.

HL2 is one of my fav single player games though.

You're in the vast, vast minority for this opinion. Half-Life's singleplayer helped save the industry.

I would however splooge all over the place if they could ever figure out one analog + mouse. Mouse is godlike for aiming, but moving with keys instead of a fluid motion sucks. I also love how any review on this site that isn't a 10 is considered trolling, by the way. 5/10 is an average score, not some devil's do-not-touch stuff. The game is "aight", and I sourced my vote with review because I knew the whiny PC crowd would claim any vote below 11 shouldn't count.

Except the game isn't average, and even ignoring that you're trolling, giving it negative points for using the STANDARD METHOD is pretty awful.

I never really bought into the age thing.

If I would have liked it back then, I would like it now.

The only times I've ever gone back to a game and didn't like it I attribute to just being different now then I was a kid.
Which is a lot less patient and more critical.

In pulling up my rankings here, my favorite FPS is BioShock. Can't complain there.

You can't straight compare a game that came out in 98 to games 13 years later. Obviously the genre will evolve, and it's hardly a fair comparison. Half-Life still holds up plenty well even as is; two of its points can't be appreciated as much now(the AI and the multiplayer/mods) but the game still has some of the best level design in the industry, holding up even today.

Well I'm not saying all games age poorly. I'm not even saying all shooters age poorly-- I still find Doom to be about as good as it was back then. Not that it was ever great or anything, but I replayed it a few years ago and it was okay.

But I guess there is a certain amount of hype you get when "you were there, bro" that you don't get otherwise. Like I think I might be a little less harsh on Half-Life even just subconsciously if "I was there, bro"

Played it in 98, can't say I had fun with it. Played it 04, when I was a bit older, still didn't have all that fun with it, finally finished it in 06 before I played Half-Life 2, yep still pretty average.

It aging, and its fun factor have nothing to do with it, I just didn't have all that great of time with it. I don't think any FPS is all that good, if I had to pick my favorite it's probably Bioshock, which I gave an 8 here.

Early age FPS games typically hold up about as well as they did because they were fun for entirely different reasons. They're less like FPS games and more like arcadey shooters, so simplistic that it's hard to go wrong.

Following that, they started to get more complex, and some of them age much worse than others.

Unreal and Quake, in my opinion, aged terribly - they were so much fun back in the day, but the genre has just moved on, and Unreal especially feels flawed in many ways.

Half-Life, however, was ahead of its time so tends to age plenty well, but you still have to keep in mind the time around it. It's a solid game as is - if you're honestly going to tell me some particular levels are bad I'd laugh at you easily because they're still among the best in the industry.

Well there's your first problem. I love FPS, just played HL1 way too late to enjoy it. Though if this topic ranked Goldeneye, I wouldn't act like a little kid if people ranked it low. There are far more productive ways to spend one's time.

tbqh Goldeneye deserved a lower rating than Half-Life even at release. At least Half-Life had an awesome single player >.>;

All four Quake games are vastly different, tbqh. Quake 3 holds up well enough, and the first isn't TERRIBLE, but it was kind of an odd mixture between the old and the new that didn't age quite so well.

And Unreal is a good example there. I wouldn't say it sucks per se, the original had some pretty amazing things going for it, but its biggest thing was the graphics, and obviously those just don't age well.

I would give C&C Renegade a 10, is that counts for anything, but that's a FPS/TPS mix(though technically you could play Half-Life in 3rd person by opening the console and typing some stuff, it was all sorts of clunky).

I don't dislike the genre, I just don't think anything great has came out of it.

Pretty damn good, and I say that as someone who didn't play it until shortly before HL2 came out in 2004. Suffers a bit from the whole "tons of games that came after it copied its good bits and improved upon them" angle, but what can you do?

Single player was all right.

Yes, the multiplayer was awesome. I don't know how many hours I put into it. I was on....3 years ago or so last time I played, its community is definitely really small now, usually the same 50-150 people in 2 or 3 different servers. Last time I was on it anyway.

I would play it right now, if my disc wasn't so scratched to hell. Stops at like 71%. Same people would still be on it too, they never seem to leave. The only reason to play Renegade was the multiplayer.
I even won $100 on a server playing some Renegade! I had the highest score for the month or something.

Totally disagree with you here, and I've already admitted I'd probably view HL1 differently if "I was there". But I wasn't.

I have large hands too, and I do it just fine. There are three main reasons it's a bad complaint:

1. It's the standard. Every FPS game does it. Period. On top of that, you're not saying "this is inferior, here's a better way to do it". You're suggesting a method that most PC gamers couldn't do because there is no such control scheme there. If you like it, you can buy controllers for it - but it's akin to complaining that a flight sim on a console uses a controller instead of a joystick for default.

2. You stated that you're playing on a laptop - a small keyboard, and an issue regarding you, not the game - you're blaming the game for something beyond its control.

3. The reason you have trouble with it - as you admitted - is you're inexperienced. You grew up with a console, and it takes time to get used to. Again, this is about you, not the game - if you were complaining about an unusually akward control scheme for default, that would be different.

Making this as an off comment is fine - there's nothing wrong with you disliking that as the default. But saying that it makes the game worse is a poor choice - you're bashing the game for your own personal issues outside of the game.
