If Punk is the best in the world why has he been in the 10 pm slot so often and not the main event.
Because he's not the Best in the World at ratings. <_<

Sadly, this seems to be the trend. A lot of Punk matches, including overruns, have been losing viewers.

Eh I think you're over exaggerating a bit edwards. I don't think normal people think of things in hierarchies like that, especially given the indecisive nature of Rock's win over Cena.

It's like in TEW when you have two guys with 100 over fight and the loser finishes at like 97 over and then you do an angle or three and he's back to 100 over. In all seriousness though I actually think TEW has the right idea here-- guys who reach "that level" aren't really going to be put below it by one loss-- especially one where they looked strong in defeat. You pretty much need to squash a guy or have him have a losing streak or lose to some guy that's way below their level for it to really dent them. WWE likes doing all 3 of these things pretty often so Cena got off easy.

Brock's return should make good TV. That's all that really matters. I mean I guess if he goes dominantly undefeated the whole year (+?) he's around that's not great but I don't think that'll be close to the case. And if it's not even if he beats some guys like Cena from time to time as long as it's good TV everyone wins.

Eh, yeah youre probably right. It'll be good tv while it lasts. I'm just hoping it doesn't get in the way of other stuff, particularly I hope it doesn't delay elevating some of these talented undercard guys who are only getting older.

And this DB stuff...we'll see where we are a month from now. YES has been around for awhile now and this is mostly in protest to THE SQUASH. We should find out nearly immediately if this is going to stick (and I mean like tonight at Smackdown)

I really do think this is just one of those "You have to be patient" things. These guys have jobbed and/or not been main event level for so long that it probably takes an adjustment period before casual fans see them and think "Hey, he's worth watching" instead of "Oh, garbage time." The main event has been John Cena for so long, I think it just needs to... not be him for a while.

Exactly, but unfortunately, short of him being confined to a hospital bed for six months, that's not going to happen, so the best we can do to try and legitimize Punk is, I guess, to keep the title on him for a really long time while he beats guys like Jericho and... uh... Mark Henry?

I mean let's not forget, part of legitimizing John Cena was having two title reigns over a year long each. Granted, that involved actually beating established threats, and all Punk has on that front right now is Jericho, but I'm just saying, they shouldn't give up on Punk just because he's not pulling ratings yet.

I'd agree with the patience thing if it hasn't been nine months since he was elevated back into the ME scene and given his first WWE championship reign.

People seemed to be getting less interested in Punk, not more, and I don't think it's simply because he's not in the overrun slot every night.

Punk might have some trouble there, his whole "agent of change" thing isn't really a big deal anymore. Now he's just another WWE Superstar who certainly has some ring psychology sensibilities but he's not a big deal. The mob is fickle and they're not going to watch Punk at 11 if they aren't watching him at 10. I really don't think it's a matter of telling people "this guy is champ and he's the main event" means they are necessarily going to buy in if the guy isn't compelling to them.

PPV main eventers (i.e. "last match") in the last year (12 PPVs, not counting the Rumble PPV at all, and not counting Del Rio's cash-in as the last match):

John Cena: 10
CM Punk: 4
The Miz: 4
Alberto Del Rio: 3
The Rock: 2
R-Truth: 2
John Morrison: 1
Triple H: 1
Kane: 1

So if Punk's not a main-eventer then no one outside of Cena is. <_<

That's not what I'm saying. I've long been hearing this idea that "casual fans see these guys given opportunities, and they think, because said guys have been treated so lowly for so long, that it's a sign of desperation on WWE's part and they just tune out." I didn't think there was much merit to it before, but I don't know how else you explain the fact that no one gets over with casuals anymore.

I think you have to keep plugging these guys in at 11 and in main events, even if people keep tuning out, so that they start to change their perception of them. Maybe that won't work, but you've got to try something. What else are you gonna do? Keep putting John Cena in the main event slot until he can't wrestle anymore and then close the WWE?

And I think that's the problem with Punk right now: the "agent of change" thing isn't really relevant anymore. Right now, he's just another sympathetic babyface. Literally, this entire angle is about Jericho being mean to CM Punk and talking about his family, and people are supposed to sympathize with Punk.

The same Punk that over the summer said he'd like to think the WWE would better off with Vince McMahon DEAD. >_>

And now he's going to be stuck in a storyline where it's the same basic thing, with Johnny "punishing" Punk every week with title matches. Once again, this is not playing to Punk's strengths at all.

They're essentially turning Punk into a tattoo'd John Cena.

I think they botched Punk horribly. They really had something special there, and I think they've decided to shoehorn him into whatever idea of a modern WWE Superstar they have. I think putting the current CM Punk and his current angle at the main event spot wouldn't really mean much. Being a main event WWE Superstar defending his title for a year at 11pm really isn't what makes Punk special.

I don't think they close the WWE, they'll just do what they did before when the good guys stopped wrestling, put out who they have and get lower ratings.

Which actually got them thisclose to going out of business. If Austin vs. McMahon hadn't taken off, they never would have made it to Wrestlemania XV.

Although granted business is much more stable and lucrative now even in a down period, and they have a substantial war chest, although they are dipping into it to launch WWE Network.
