The worst part of being from Windurst was the run to Valkrum Dunes was the longest an hardest for us.

Boats, PIRATES ON THE BOAT, having to get back once you grew too many levels.

True story: The foundation for my Ridiculous fortune on Unicorn--- I was one of the top 25 or so richest players without buying gold---was farming the chocobo grass for the quest and moat carp.

I stumbled upon the grass thing by accident. The mayflys in the mountains by jeuno dropped them 90% of the time and spawned quickly in this one area. I literally free farmed this area for a week straight.

Also, did anyone else save up for the Lu Shang quest using only carp? Never has an item been so worth it. That's what I loved about FFXI: they made you work hard for items but damn those things were worth it. Your profit skyrocketed to the point that you never had to worry about money again.

Never did goldsmithing. My Linkshell had a 103 Goldsmither and he was the richest person I ever saw in game.

I stuck to fishing and cooking because Sushi became OP and I could turn a stupid profit off of very little upfront cost.

Did you spend the millions and power level your Goldsmithing or did you mine and take it slow?

We had about 5-6 dedicated players back in 2008 but the game is butchered now. Everyone can play with everyone and there hasn't been an influx of new players so the lower levels are empty.

The fun of the game was finding people your level. It became a game where you had to work with people to get to the top. People became well known for being good players and having good items. You would get people requesting your specific job even when you were on a different one.

For instance, when I play MMOs I can't play without the best items. I'd stop what I was doing and spend a full week getting RSE gear because one of the pieces was the best for one level. MMO elitist for sure. But this elitism guaranteed I was always in demand; I don't remember ever waiting more than 5 minutes for a party on my paladin.

For the first like 60 or so you can do it without mining except for the gold near the end. After that though you really need to farm or just buy items. From 60 to 80ish is when it's really expensive. Before this you can't really make gil with the craft. So that section too a long time. But you can synth and sell slowly after that depending on what the market was.

That's the thing:

It was never about the gameplay. You had to be there. You had to be playing it. This sense of walking into this massive, unforgiving world that just threw you right into the fray.

It was ruthless in how it treated new players and old players alike. Everywhere was a far run filled with peril. The boat to a place where everything could kill you would randomly spawn Pirates that could crap on you and everyone on the boat.

Wanna know what made it fun? That level 75 White Mage who would sit by the boat and raise everyone because we were ALL a community. Bad players with bad items were shunned and not invited to premiere parties. Guys that busted their hump and farmed for the good stuff got invites all the time.

We respected the guys who would teleport without charging your team. When Gil Sellers came in we banded together and fixed ourselves. How? We began trading between each other. High level Craftsman would trade something for something else. I had maxed out Cooking so I would outfit entire Linkshell Statics With +1 Sushi and they would help me with Armor Quests.

Even before that, when I first started the game and was doing woodworking, this Alchemist would sell me his Arrowheads for whole sale price because he was skilling them up. That's how the game worked.

No game I have ever played had that sense of community. Yes, the game was unnecessarily harsh but we fought through it TOGETHER. There was no PVP because FFXI wasn't that kind of game. You didn't want to fight the other player; you wanted to do everything you could to help them.

A lot of FFXI's problem was Square's inability to control their community and make reasonable game decisions. But even before that a lot of things were wrong about ffxi.

1. NA/JPN rift.
Japan got the game over a year before America did. The game had already gained a reputation for being elitist, naturally a lot of the JPN players didn't want to play with the NA ones. Some of them do this for the language barrier, but it was pretty obvious when the gap was just about closed that a lot of elitism and stuff was going on.

2. Notorious Monsters and Rare Drops
This is another lame thing. Having to farm like normal monster for extremely rare drops (RO), or having rare monsters dropping moderately better stuff (Rift) are great, but when a noob zone NM drops an item that you'll use until level 72 there's a problem. This is from someone who made most of his pre-goldcrafting gil camping.

3. Terrible class balance
FFXI might have one of the worst class balance systems I've seen. Like I can't recall a game that had a class like Dragoon. They were so underpowered. Basically they did less damage then a warrior, could not tank, their wyrvn always died to aoe, had less utility then a dark, etc. Thieves got a short end too (I was a thief I know). Basically for end game stuff I got swapped in for 2 things SA/TA and TH3. Later on you got cool things like added effect daggers and stuff, but those came much too late. Also Ninja tanking almost made Paladin's obsolete.

4. Lack of user mods
Square had a policy that disallowed any custom addons. Including a thing like a windower (which everyone used anyways), this meant if you accidently hit alt-tab instead of alt-1 for a macro you just exited your game.

5. Worlds slowest fights/leveling/artificial difficulty
FFXI moves slow. It can take you an hour of fighting +2 for LFG to get like 4K xp, and then you lose like half of it after one death. This is something that should not happen in any game. Especially since a lot of deaths are simply unavoidable the way the game is set up.

6. POL
The POL interface sucks ass. I don't know why I have to load up this program to play FFXI. Other games just have a simple launcher where you log in that's it.

7. Gilfarmers
On my server (bismarck) gilfarmers drove the price up on items around 20x what they were before. Square took ages to do anything about this.

8. Square's inability to do anything useful.
True story. I was in the tunnel farming the morrion worm. There was another person there. After a while I noticed that they would stay at the same spawn spot (might change after each pop) and just sit there, and would always be at the right spot (1 in 6 chance). So I flagged a GM and told them I suspect the character is running a script or something. Well, turns out I was right and the character vanished from the zone. About 2 hours later I'm mining in moblin city, and i see the same character. And I flag a GM again and this is what I get

"We only banned them from that one zone"

I mean, I think it's got a good sense of openness and adventure, and a good mythos.

I wish you could move a hell of a lot faster or make the levels not so unnecessarily large.
Also kind of overhaul a few things that are inherent in MMOs that are kind of....unacceptable really.

The payoff is the player interaction though, something most games can't offer.

Lastly, I've never seen a game where people really DIVE into roles. For instance:

My main character was a Paladin. Every Paladin on the server had this thing where we would wave and chat with each other whenever we ran into each other. We would let new paladin use our old gear, help each other out getting Paladin Armors, help level 30s do the Paladin Quest, etc. We would roam around the world and just help people.

Everyone just dove into the Paladin "Role" and loved it. Some new player would aggro 10 goblins in the Jungle and we would provoke them and tank it so that the rest of the players in the area didn't suffer. I remember once feeling so confident that I told my Ranger

"Grab any monster in this building, I'll tank it"

What made it worth it is that people WANTED to play with you. I had a rule that no one on my team died. No one. I would sell out before I let even the stupidest player die. Paladins became heroes on our server because of the steep penalty that came from deaths. People knew they could play with me and never lose XP, never waste time. Even if someone made a mistake with a pull I would take their mistake as my own and never complain.

Like Isiah Thomas said when Jim Gray asked him about his first Title Season, "You wouldn't get it".

I agree 100% that the game had it's flaws: It punished new players by not explaining much, the quests were sometimes vague and unhelpful, the expansions were even MORE ruthless, bad jobs were punished harshly, certain jobs were punished even more harshly.

But largeness of it was the best part. When you went exploring you really felt like you were exploring. You could stumble upon a rare enemy and get wiped or run into a rare enemy and get a 1/100 drop and it would make your whole damn day.

Camping Leaping Lizzie. That's all I gotta say.

I think they could have made quests that were actually fun to do and if done in order, would naturally guide a player up through the levels, you know?

Kind of dumb to get 5 missions that I could do at level 15-20 and then get one that's impossible until I'm 30.

1.Agreed. But on the other hand, there was nothing better than being on late at night and getting into one of those legendary Japanese parties. It was the most efficient thing I've ever seen in my life. They were flawless. I would level 3 times as fast as usual.

2. Agreed. But I kinda liked it.

3.The butchering of Dragoon was the worst thing FFXI ever did. That class was the biggest class in the game at launch. Problem was that Penta-Thrust was stupid kinda of OP. They fixed Dragoon like 2 years too late.

I was a Bard when the game launched, and then a Corsair on the first new job expansion. People loved me. I had a ton of fun with Corsair and wish more games had a class like it. The only pain in the ass was having to level my Ranger Job... that took the longer than I was used to waiting for groups.

This goes along with the class thing we were discussing earlier

Supports were flat out over powered in that game. Bards turned bad parties into bad parties but it turned a good party into an amazing one.

The best party I ever had was this Japanese Party in Yuhtunga Jungle.

I was a Paladin and got invited to a party with Corsair/Bard/Dark Knight/Warrior

The damage was stupid. We killed things before they could break my Defender/Sentinel. It was retarded.

Sigh.

I miss that sense of never wanting a party member to die while you were the tank. People chuckled at my stupid macros for when I provoked. "Face me, {Goblin Smithy}! I'm your enemy!"

And I remember finishing my PLD quest MYSELF. No help. My level 30 running through that god forsaken Davoi, running out of stuff that cloaked you, masked your scent, and made your footsteps noiseless. And JUST AS I WAS REACHING THE END of the quest, I f***ed up and aggro'd some Orc. I was distraught as I ran, feeling hopeless. And suddenly out of no where, this other Paladin shows up, cures me and draws the Orc away. It was such a great feeling. I thanked them so profusely and they were just like ":)"

And that's what made you want to be helpful, those moments where you couldn't get by without help.

Exactly. The game was rough for people who didn't know how to communicate and be social. It was a game where you depended on other people for nearly everything.

Beastmaster was the one job you could use to solo and guess what, it was rarely played. And they eventually wanted to join parties because of the dynamic of a fun party.

A great FFXI party is untouchable by anything in gaming.

On my way through the DRG quest where you had to find the dragon skull, I happened on a random RDM in the zone. He was JP but spoke some broken english. Using some auto-translate, I told him what I was there for, and he decided to escort me right to the spot and then all the way back out. Took 45 minutes or so, and he just randomly helped me. For the next few months, we'd talk to each other once a week or so and just chat about random stuff. What an awesome guy.

I remember my first trip to Jeuno, all by myself. I was horrendously underleveled. Probably like level 14 or so, but I read about it and wanted to go and was bored leveling in Valkurm so I just hopped on the boat at Selbina and took off. From Mhaura, hauling through Buburimu, over to Tahrongi, I went down to explore Windurst first and was amazed at the size of the place. After a few hours exploring Windurst and putting some crystals up for sale there, I went back up through Tahrongi and finally found the Meriphataud Mountains and that ridiculously huge skeleton. Then I found that horrific Sauromugue Champaign. I cannot tell you how nerve wracking it was trying to get through that place, and sure enough I was killed more than once. I ALMOST gave up trying to get to Jeuno but I was a stubborn motherf***er and I finally made it. That whole thing took me an entire day and cost me a level I'm pretty sure, but it was so much fun and experiencing Jeuno for the first time was amazing.
