N64 was nowhere near the PS1 in quality, much less in quantity. It only had a handful of good games in a handful of genres. There's a reason why it failed, guys - it sucked.

psx is JRPGs and MGS, really can't give it genre diversity over...almost any system, maybe the wii(all platformers)

that being said the N64 was mostly built around multiplayer and thus ages badly purely as a result of multiplayer being a social thing and other people always move on to the 'latest and greatest'. perfect dark is still a lot of fun but it's pretty hard to get anyone to play it compared to halo or CoD. so psx games are still more worth playing these days where there's less than a handful of great single player games for the N64

The PS1 did smash through a barrier that made gaming more mainstream, but the N64 also sold less than the SNES and NES. I'd say a lack of games had a lot to do with that.

You're underestimating the appeal of nostalgic systems for this sort of thing. Whipping out a PS3 for some Call of Duty isn't going to fly at a casual party, but everyone has both played and adores Mario Kart 64.

Got a reply with actual substance? Compare N64's library with any successful console's. Hell, the Dreamcast, which failed quite badly, had a more diverse library.

At "a party" you pretty much only see Rock Band (not these days, but it used to be popular) or some Wii/Kinect crap with any regularity.

Though I've definitely seen Halo/CoD more than any N64 games at "parties" in the last ten years. I mean I know some geeky girls that claim to like Mario Kart 64 a lot but still, never really seen it busted out.

I've had friends whip out their N64 plenty of times during casual get-togethers, with and without "the ladies." As I mentioned already, drunk 64 gaming can be incredible. I mean, you wouldn't bring it out for a frat party, but that just begs the question why you'd be hanging out with insecure losers in the first place.

Plus, it's not a this-or-that situation. My PS3 and N64 are the two systems I have hooked up right now, in fact, just for this kind of dilemma!

Got a reply with actual substance? Compare N64's library with any successful console's. Hell, the Dreamcast, which failed quite badly, had a more diverse library.

That word "diverse" you're missing sort of misses the point. In the OP, I did two things you might have missed:

1) Argue that the N64's library is a quality-over-quantity situation, meaning that raw release numbers were besides the point.

2) Provide a semi-comprehensive list of genres and the strongest games the N64 has to offer in those respective genres.

You can take either of those apart and compare them to other systems.

Quality would have mattered if a bunch of other consoles didn't offer comparable or higher quality. So we remove that.

Do you really want me to make lists for the other consoles like NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, PS1, PS2, PS3, etc.? Come on, you should know them already.

I mean, you literally listed Pokemon Stadium in a list of supposedly great RPGs. You know very well yourself that you're grasping at straws here.

Drunk CoD and Halo (well, I'm only assuming on the former) can be incredible too.

I just really don't think N64 has any sort of "party" appeal that FPSes or casual multiplayer games of today don't-- and I'd say less just because it's not likely to be at anyone's house without digging it out.

It's just a group to group thing at best and at worst it's n64 fanboyism + confirmation bias at work.

i always find it just... entertaining to see people rank the wii low despite it honestly having the best library out of any nintendo console. has a ton of shovelware sure, but has a lot of great games on it too. most and best rpgs on it since the snes, best platformers, best fighting games, most and best action games, most, best, and worst party games, best shmups since the snes... really it's very weird how the great library on it gets utterly shafted and then people turn around and praise the n64 despite being worse at everything. hell, gamecube doesn't beat it in much of anything either but it at least has a couple categories where it's better.

...it has guilty gear accent core plus, King of Fighters 94 (sucks) to 98 (slower than i'd like but still solid) and tatsunoko vs. capcom. yes, it's better there. the snes fighters really aren't good anymore. SF2 might've been nice back then but today? sorry, it sucks. turbo's barely playable and is vastly inferior to the 3 main fighters on the system that aren't Brawl, which i have nothing against either.

castle shikigami 3, sin and punishment 2, and blast works are the three shmups that come to mind on it. and while that ain't much, it still somehow manages to offer more and better than the gamecube or n64 did. though if you're a fan of the genre you probably got a 360 since it's done the best job since possibly ever for consoles.

and rpgs isn't really a contest with anything save the snes either. we're in the swan song and have 3 well received games coming out (Pandora, Last Story, Xenoblade) which is already more than the N64. add in Sakura Wars (shared with the PS2), Fragile Dreams, Muramasa, Monster Hunter Tri, Fire Emblem, Phantom Brave (shared with PS2 and PSP, less content than the latter), Dokapon Kingdom (a party RPG!), Arc Rise Fantasia (if you really want an anime-rpg), and Baroque, a good rogue game (unlike Shiren, though that's another RPG on the system)? yeah, it tops the gamecube's options of Symphonia, Arcadia Legends, Fire Emblem, and Paper Mario and starts to stare down the SNES pretty damn hard.

platformers also not really a problem there with the two galaxy, two kirby, dkcr, nsmb wii, epic mickey, rayman origins (shared with pretty much everything this gen), sonic colors, and downloadable games (e.g., mm9 and mm10). system killed it this gen there and only the snes can compete for nintendo consoles.

it flat out has got the best in most categories and absolutely the most diverse selection out of any console they've had.

Uh, N64's got S&P and SF64, which makes it basically unbeatable in that department! (And I almost forgot Rogue Squadron, which is excellent.)

Still, I hear you on the Wii being underrated. If we include backwards compatibility / VC, then it gets bumped up even more.

not to nitpick your post, especially because I agree with the sentiment (I hold the Wii behind the DS but neck-and-neck with the SNES), but no one should ever highlight this game. ever. it is awful. if you want to pick out a solid jrpg, you could just as easily go with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (what a name). just not ARF, please.

and fair enough on ARF. i've an undub of it that's started and waiting in backlog hell, but it seemed like a decent anime-rpg. wasn't gonna listen to that thing in english because 2 minutes of youtube said that was a terrible idea. guess it can stay in backlog hell for a while then. >_>;

Arc Rise Fantasia is amazing if you play it with a "so bad it's good" mindset. The story is so hilariously cheesy. There's only two characters in the entire game I actually like. Also, the gameplay is annoying as hell because holy s*** it doesn't have enough save points.

Like, seriously. There's a part in the game where you have to go through an entire dungeon without a save point(no exaggeration) and then the boss just happens to be able to auto-KO you with petrify during turn 1 >_>

It's..."yeah." I like the game but it's absolutely terrible.

Maybe I should explain my rankings:

I put the N64 and GCN above the Wii because I feel that the N64 and GCN have better first party games than the Wii, as a whole. I based it primarily off of first party games for the rankings between these three because that's been the primary focus for them. Mario Kart Wii is inferior to both 64 and Double Dash, and Brawl is inferior to Melee and 64. Wii beats GameCube when it comes to Zelda because of Skyward Sword, but the N64 has both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, beating the Wii in that category. Metroid Prime is better than Prime 3. The N64 and GameCube have better Mario Party's than the Wii. Let's not forget that the Wii lacks Star Fox, F-Zero, and Pikmin. The only thing the Wii does better than the other two in terms of first party games is in Mario platformers.

the wii also did the same for the Primes, which made them play much better.
ditto for RE4, one of the best rated games from the 'cube, though it also added content that wasn't there.

the gamecube didn't have a traditional kirby or dkc game on it. it didn't have 2d mario. the n64 didn't have fire emblem. the n64 had 0 metroid games on it. the gamecube and n64 each had 1 mario and both are inferior to the wii's pairing.

they fielded different first party games so going 'well it didn't have ___!' is a two-way street. and rating it by first party only makes absolutely NO SENSE for either the wii or gamecube considering that's where the most notable gains went for the system; not counting stuff from capcom, konami, namco, sega, etc is just incredibly flawed.

honestly those are games that are in backlog hell because i want to do them back-to-back. it's a direct sequel after all and there's some small bonuses you get. of course getting either for cheap is impossible now. that said obviously there are ways.

Then how about just ranking things based off of how much more fun we had with them?

I had the most fun with the gamecube, followed by the N64, then the Wii.

And I'm only counting original games with these rankings. I don't see any reason why non-original games should be factored into these.

Bio Freaks was a (pretty bad) fighter on the N64 too!

I've seen Mario Kart 64, Gauntlet Legends, several Dreamcast-games, and music-based games at most parties that feature games. That's not to say most parties that aren't specifically designed for games have games available to play though.

Also, to clarify on my previous comment: I grew up with the Genesis and greatly enjoyed it like all of my consoles, but I don't know if it confidently beats any system I've owned other than the Xbox. Is it a coincidence both of those systems largely relied on the success of one series? You don't need a big library, but you do need some different series to lean on. Many of the Genesis's other games are criminally under-rated, certainly, yet for me it remains completely outclassed by the SNES despite its personal nostalgia. My top three is Nintendo-heavy:

N64 >= SNES > PS2 (mainly due to backwards-compatibility and playing several of its games on the Xbox, though I still need to play more of its library)

It's a great console, but... you're starting to think incorrectly IMO

I bought this because it was $4. It was the worst $4 I ever spent.
