I mean, we all know it's got a very limited number of total games, but part of me wants to argue that it's a quality-over-quantity situation. Great racing games (MK64, DKR, F-Zero X), great action-adventure games (OoT / MM, both Bomberman games, both Banjo games), great shooter games (SF64 / S&P), great FPS games (007 / PD), great sports games (Mario Tennis / Golf for life), great party games (Mario Party), great platformers (SM64, Kirby, DK), and some pretty solid RPGs in Paper Mario, Ogre Battle 64, and the Pokemon Stadium games. Even for the genre the system's lacking, fighters, there's Smash.
I don't know, am I just crazy?

I'd agree with this if it was actually available to purchase today at a reasonable price, no way I my parents were going to get that for me at age 10...
it's a great multiplayer console (maybe the best ever) with a decent single player experience and an awful controller
as a whole package it's worse than the PS2, SNES, and Genesis. it's ideal for friendly multiplayer though. if I was throwing a small group party and only wanted to bring one console I'd bring the N64.

N64 obviously has extreme nostalgia for being my first console, and I love it to death, but Banjo-Kazooie, Paper Mario, and Majora's Mask are the only games I've played that I would call instant and undeniable classics.
SNES and DS have much better claims to being the best, in my opinion.
I wouldn't put the Genesis on the N64's level, personally. The "big three" I normally see mentioned are the SNES, DS, and PS2, all great choices. I dunno, I think my judgment might be clouded by the drunk Mario Party get-together I had a few weeks ago!

sorry, it's one of the worst. it has some quality, but less than most other systems, and their age shows too on a lot of 'em. hell, if you're going for quality, the Saturn comes out ahead of it. n64's forte is zelda and platformers. ps1's forte was rpgs and a dozen genres with great stuff in 'em.
and counting the stadium games for anything says a lot.

I mean come the **** on, as soon as you see the "point the controller at the screen and see a zoomed in shot on the controller screen", Pokemon Snap 2 is the immediately first idea you can possibly think of.
i'm still surprised we didn't get one for the DS. and i'll be shocked if there's no pokemon snap for the 3ds. we ALREADY HAVE a 3D Pokedex! it's literally the game that stuff like AR was meant for.

90% of the games in the PS1-N64-Saturn era look like jagged s***, and play accordingly. It was such an awkward transition period for gaming between 2d and 3d, and the technology just wasn't there yet except "hey, this mess of polygons kinda sorta looks like a human!"

RPGs, Platformers, fighters, shumps, action / adventure. PS1 had a little bit of everything.
Shmups -> I'm not familiar enough with the PSOne library to know what "the best" shmups are for the system, but can they really be better than Star Fox 64 / Sin & Punishment? There's also a Japan-only Treasure title that's apparently really good.
Fighters -> Yep.
Action / Adventure -> Again, hard to imagine what games can compare to the Zelda games, Banjo Kazooie, etc. Are you thinking of games like Metal Gear Solid?
I hope we can at least agree that the N64 wins in the racing department.

....Panzer Dragoon Saga is the first thing you should mention, for one. best RPG that gen and one of the best of all time, period. that's the crowning jewel of the system, not NiGHTS.
two, the Saturn was a fighting game paradise. if the N64 was platformers (debatable) and the PS1 was RPGs (not debatable), the Saturn was fighters (also not debatable). the pad, hardware, and games all were meant for 2D and it shows very clearly with their fighters.
three, it was also the system shmups went to. Treasure did two games on it, Guardian Heroes and Radiant Silvergun, the latter of which is probably the best game they've ever made. sure the latter never made it stateside, but it's not like it was difficult to... manipulate that system. <<;
four, how the hell do you mention Shining Tears and not Shining Force 3?
five, Saturn shared some games with the PS1. sadly, most of these are japanese only or inferior to the ps1's counterparts (not all are, but anything needing 3d probably was).
six, Panzer Dragoon Zwei was pretty damn good. seriously, the ONE series that started on the Saturn and made its way to another console and you picked Shining Tears over it?
seven, you want to talk about party games? try Bomberman. 10 people local multiplayer.
eight, for a rather unknown game even for the system (and i only found out about it relatively recently), Astal. 2D platformer and... actually still quite good. nowadays we're praising rayman origins, el shaddhai, or anything from vanillaware - games where the background and setting matters. Astal predates that. handrawn beautiful fantasy world with a soundtrack to match. one of the better games that nobody's ever played.
so no, that's not a "hater post." that's a "the N64 really was a pretty bad system and if you're going to talk about quality that gen, you had better talk about the Saturn because if you're naming off a handful, that system might have the best quality." catch is, once you get past the first 10, you're pretty much done. has fantastic quality, had miserable quantity.
