Nah, what happened was originally they were gonna have her be a woman. But they were worried Americans would be offended, so they said "No it's cool, she's got a dick. You can punch her." That was for the Japanese release. But when they actually tried to release the game in America, that wasn't enough, so they straight up replaced her with a male character named Billy or some crap.

Yeah, Capcom will go on record to say that she's supposed to be ambiguous but original japanese Final Fight concept art shows she was intended from the beginning to be newhalf i.e. transgender

so yeah that whole "they changed it because of punching women" or whatever is a total lie. Before that was even an issue she was already designated as newhalf.

Although they did still change Poison and Roxy to Billy and Sid because of punching women on the SNES versions

The theory about them changing it because of punching women especially falls apart when you consider that her palette swap Roxy has never ever been referred to as transgender, even in the original Final Fight releases. If it were an issue why wouldn't they have changed Roxy too

A lot of weird things were issues in video games back then. I dunno.

But if she had just been a natural born woman, she'd probably be long forgotten. At least this whole thing made her memorable enough that she still appears in games.

Yeah. I was actually arguing that she was actually biologically female that has a rumor that she might be a dickgirl or a tranny, personally.

That video kinda says that that's an irrational viewpoint to have, though. I wasn't aware it was so unambiguous with the early release stuff.

They've got her correctly ambiguous now but it's kinda hard to argue that way when there's a lot of early stuff pointing the other way now. The one argument you could make is that final fight Poison, being a generic, isn't the same one as street fighter Poison (who has a strong majority of her evidence pointing to "ambiguous"), and that she just has that rep because it was a common look among trannies in Metro City, but it's a stretch. It's the argument I'm going to go with because the other side needs more arguments at this point.

Clearly Capcom needs to make an official statement that says she's a straight up female just to give the other side some ammo. Convincing traps that you know are traps are no fun.
