You know what's been weird about Daniel Bryan's Main Event push? I mean aside from the push itself?
Assuming this match goes on to the end of the show, we're looking at a nearly twenty minute match, and they've really been letting him do these long main event matches just about every week. I mean yeah, other HBK trainees have been in WWE before (Cade, London), but even back as early as 2002 everyone knew that Bryan was the crown jewel of that training academy. i'd say the biggest things that give him a leg up are:
1, Punk. right now anyway, i highly doubt punk isn't the one carrying a lot of influence backstage and wants dragon to get his dues. 2, formerly with HBK. so on the other side of backstage politics he has a big friend helping him out. this helped him get his foot in the door. 3, himself. it's not JUST ring talent but personality plays a big factor, and he's a lot easier to work with than some other guys at his level (Aries being the biggest standout as i think this is what shuts him down). the two combined though? left the door wide open for him. but yeah, i 100% believe he has his title because of Punk. and 70% believe he won MITB because of Punk too. either as a demand, them sweetening the pot, or realizing that if Punk left they should have another indie darling and who better. -- The King Wang. Well whatever the case, this title reign has been better than I could have ever imagined.
I love how Smackdown has twice ended with a worn down Daniel Bryan grinning and slinking away with the title as everyone else on the roster beats the holy hell out of each other. It's such a great shot. And I'm sort of surprised how excited some of the people in the front row looked when Big Show touched him. this is one of those rare instances where MITB is being used to legitimately raise someone out the midcard and into the ME on its own.
Kane could randomly get in and out of it, but MITB helped make that statement. it quickened the process a ton. Del Rio was already at the ME level AND had the build up. winning just gave the extra kick needed in case of emergency. Punk 2 was a goodie in this regard. it helped elevate Punk with his feud that happened with Hardy. that was, until now, the best usage of MITB in terms of building a wrestler completely - both character and placement. (Swagger was the ultimate failure at this.) but this... this is them understanding how it can be used. really appreciating that. -- The King Wang. Listen up Urinal Cake. Swagger's title reign started with him not looking the least bit excited or emotional or even interested that he had just become World Champion for the first time in his young career.
Not a second into his reign and it was already f***ed. But yeah, this is some excellent work on their part. They're just doing so much right with Smackdown's main storyline right now. oh i agree that THE ULTIMATE OPPORTUNIST came there and it also set how mitb would be used thereafter. it certainly helped his career out but it didn't really define it in any way. not that it was bad of a run (i don't remember enough anyway to say that but i don't remember thinking it sucked) which is good, but it didn't propel him like it did Punk in summer of punk 2, or anywhere close to the level dragon's got now. it gave him some credibility, but edge/hardy i think is what really made it. hilariously too because i would've bet money that matt would've gotten the better of that feud. until he... didn't.
