well for the first time since 2006, Pixar hasn't released a good movie this year, so of course it's not a good year for Animated movies

Edit: oh wait, that's right, Tintin didn't make it

The BAFTA's nominations were better, IMO. This is coming from someone who loved Drive, but that movie really is one of the best and it's a shame it only got the best picture nom there. Fassbender also was nominated for Best Actor in the bafta's too, if you were wondering.

I expected Tintin not to make the Animated nominees list because I think the academy doesn't count motion capture as animation, but you gotta give them some credit, they are the only major awards body to have nominated the actual best animated movie last year (Kung-Fu Panda 2).

The Artist is very good, its cute, its stupidly charming, its easy to like. Its a very safe pick for Best Picture. Not a film you really want to talk about with your friends like Drive or Tree of Life. It's "Well, I did see this cute black and white film the other day!"

Now a real Best Animated Picture snub is Arietty.

Don't they usually wait until the year it comes out in the states for it to be nominated? I know the film was released in Japan in 2010 and here last year, but Arriety will probably end up contending in next year's best animated feature.

People getting up in arms about an animated award?

The only real shocker is Ryan Gosling not getting the drive nomination and even that isn't too surprising, he was never going to win when Clooney and Dujardin are in there.

"Tintin was an inevitable snub because as said, motion-capture isn't counted as animation for the Oscars."

Didn't the academy snub the original Tron for best special effects because they considered computer animation "cheating" or something?

Tintin was an inevitable snub because as said, motion-capture isn't counted as animation for the Oscars. Which is pretty stupid really, but nothing worth complaining about because that's how it's always been and they're probably not going to change it. We should have seen it coming.

Now a real Best Animated Picture snub is Arietty.

The good news, however, is that it looks like Rango is a lock to win, and it deserves that.

But you know what people need to be hyped about? Gary Oldman got nominated, especially after it seeming like he would get snubbed. And he just might win.

Edit: I do think the Best Picture category is rather poor though, especially after two years of 10 well-deserved nominations, even if the most oscar-bait in each won. There are only two films there that strike me as particularly deserving of the nomination: The Artist and Hugo. Where's Drive? Where's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? Even more mainstream stuff like say, Planet of the Apes is a lot more nomination-worthy than something like The Help. We've gone back to how it was a few years ago when the nomination list is populated mainly be oscar-bait and snubs a lot of the actual best films of the year.

Descendants and Midnight in Paris could win the screenplay awards.

Woody Allen was legit this year, never seen a standing before ovation in the theatre for one of his, though given his recent work that's understandable.

People getting up in arms about an animated award?

Tintin is pretty much generally considered the best animated movie of 2011, along with two movies most poeple haven't heard about getting nominated.

I wouldn't be too surprised if next year they alter the rule and let motion capture films get in provided certain criteria is met.

Also, Interesting fact; It is Hugo that is leading the oscars this year with 11 nominations, not The Artist which everyone expected (it only got 10).

Rango is the favourite and might very well have won even if Tintin was there tbqh.

Hugo got a lot of love it's not really surprising given the themes and subject matter. What everyone expects if for the artist to win more of the important awards.

All in all I'm ok with this because the likely winners of most of the awards deserve to win.

People don't really remember nomination snubs after a few years, though you do get some what the hell how did X not win moments but those involve already nominated films.

I just checked, and unless things have changed lately, they typically go by western release date for Oscar nominations. I mean, Spirited Away was released in Japan in 2001 and won the 2003 Oscar.

Also, looking at the whole list, not too bad. I actually agree with most of those categories. It's just a shame that Best Picture is the problem here.

The Artist, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, Hugo and Moneyball are amongst the nominated films and if we had the regular 5 those might have been the five nominated movies.

That's a solid lineup and The Artist or The Descendants would be excellent choices either way. Hell if we believe in LFF, then Hugo/Artist/Midnight in Paris/War Horse all LFF each other paving the way for a Descendants win.

TinTin fro Animation and Drive for Best Picture weren't nominated WTF.
Also X-Men: First Class but I didn't expect that to be nominated.

I liked 2009's nominees cause it had The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and District 9.

List is overall fine, only Extremely Loud and Extremely close is kind of iffy.

You put Drive at #10, then people would complain about Shame, Melancholia, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Tinker Tailor soldier spy.

This was a pretty stacked year and you were always going to see some great films not make the cut. Hell include all those films i just listed and then there's still plenty of over well liked films people would make a case for like Bridesmaids.

Well it's a relative thing. The Help and War Horse (and I would say Tree of Life, a statement bound to cause controversy) certainly don't deserve the nomination over those films, and now that there's no actual cap to the number of nominations, they're effectively saying that those films are nowhere near good enough. Obviously they can't make a massive list, but there's still less of an excuse for snubs than ever.

Oh but The Help's fanbase is huge, very, very solid and vocal support with big box office numbers. War Horse is Spielberg's "grand return" and it also has more than it's fair share of backers.

Hell in other awards you can't complain too much, I mean look at Gary Oldman looking unlikely to make it and he goes in above a host of other big names!

"... but now only films that receive a minimum of 5% of total number one votes are eligible for Best Picture nominations..." - Academy President Tom Sherak

If a certain movie misses out, chances are it's because it had less than 5% of total #1 votes than they're nowehere near as good. For all we know, Drive, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy probably only recieved 2-3% of those votes.

No Young Adult or 50/50 anywhere makes me mad sad. Dumb Bridesmaids is getting everyone in a ruffle just because it's got emotion and a scene where a bunch of ladies poop themselves.

I can't wait to see Drive and feel that that got cheated as well.

Also, the Animated Features that got nominated that I've seen were very good. Rango was goddamn fantastic, and Kung-Fu Panda was very good as well. I've heard surprisingly good things about Puss in Boots, and I bet no one in here has heard of the others, so it's kinda hard to complain about them.
