I disagree with SOPA philosophically, but I know that in reality the biggest effect it will have would be shutting down sites like waffles and megavideo.

So I kind of want to see it pass now for entertainment purposes.

It probably won't. However, this really isn't the only issue that SOPA/PIPA brings about.

The law essentially scares off many creators of future "major websites" because these creators won't like the idea that the government could come in and shut them down just because their sites carry user-created content. All it takes is for one user to post something the government deems illegal.

If start-up sites keep getting destroyed for this reason then the progression of the internet would be severely hindered.

This is why facebook going down would be better. Twitter gives them a place to yell, be outraged, and most importantly, spread the word.

Sorry, I missed where you mentioned sites exclusively for pirating. My previous post doesn't really apply in that case.

However, I am interested on what you think the government will do if the exclusively pirating site is foreign. It's not like they can just shut that site down. It's out of their jurisdiction.

This might have been true if it was just the government shutting down sites. The bill allows companies to make complaints to shut down sites, and seeing as their only goal is profit, you can be damn well sure that they're going to seize the opportunity to attack legitimate sites that hurt their bottom lines.

SOPA could shut down a site like Giant Bomb. If a publisher doesn't like a poor review the site gives one of their games, and Giant Bomb has done Endurance Runs of one of their games, they could get the site shut down for displaying copyrighted material. Unless GB gets express written consent on every piece of footage they show for every game.

Though I think the most recent incarnation of SOPA only applied for foreign-based sites, so Giant Bomb would be safe, though Edge wouldn't.
