From: LordoftheMorons | #046 Mershaaay posted... Like I said, I really only see sites SPECIFICALLY designed for pirating getting shut down.
This might have been true if it was just the government shutting down sites. The bill allows companies to make complaints to shut down sites, and seeing as their only goal is profit, you can be damn well sure that they're going to seize the opportunity to attack legitimate sites that hurt their bottom lines.
Companies are already trying to get sites like ebay and craigslist listed as "rogue websites" because they provide a competing service.
CalvinbalI posted... SOPA could shut down a site like Giant Bomb. If a publisher doesn't like a poor review the site gives one of their games, and Giant Bomb has done Endurance Runs of one of their games, they could get the site shut down for displaying copyrighted material.
XFD do people really think that this will actually happen?

yeah except using clips for reviews is fair use-- always has been and SOPA won't change that

The point kind of is that SOPA > Fair use legally speaking. It overrides it.

Sites like Giant Bomb don't just use clips for reviews. They do full playthroughs of games with commentary added. They do 30+ minute quick looks at games that are however positive or negative as they care to make them. Those are two of Giant Bomb's most well regarded features, and while it's absolutely laughable to say that any game company has ever lost a sale because a potential customer just watched an endurance run on Giant Bomb, it seems entirely possible to me that the entire site could be shut down because of them. Especially considering the "shoot first, ask questions later" approach of SOPA.

I wish these blackouts were limited to US IP addresses. It's not like I can hate American copyright protection any more than I already do. But I'm Canadian, so I can't even write my congressman.

I could say "What if the government started secretly kidnapping citizens cause the PATRIOT Act suspends habeus corpus????????"
But I don't since that's stupid and will never happen
Just like the CIA would never conduct psychiatric experiments, including the administration of LSD, to unwitting prison inmates and US civilians. Oh wait, that was project MKULTRA. You can't argue for increased government power on the assumption that they won't use it, or abuse it. That's asinine. Legislation should be intelligently written so that it cannot be abused.

TVTropes seems innocent on the surface, but when you dig deeper, find the weird fetish pages and really take a look at what the site is about, you start to see what kind of person meticulously catalogues minor details in pop culture, and trust me, that kind of person is not a pretty one.

They actually got rid of Troper Tales because they were getting a, shall we say horrifying reputation. In any case, none of them would get SOPA'd except maybe bronies (for making videos out of copyrighted content.) 4chan could easily get NDAA'd, though.

From: MarvelousGerbil | #074 How do any of these things remotely affect you if you don't actively seek them?
These sites are hotbeds of racist, misogynist and generally abhorrent people. Even if they don't affect me personally, it's still morally right to protect them from harming others.
-- Jerry Sandusky is a football God! Jerry Sandusky is a football LEGEND! http://youtu.be/B3fRhOfkc_w
Oy gevalt. I mean, you're right about /b/ I suppose, but nobody has a goddamn moral obligation to take down those sites, and the government certainly doesn't want to.

True, true. Just wishful thinking on my part.
Still, if one of your friends is a misogynist nerd or a brony, punch him. Well, maybe literally, but let him know that he's wrong and treat him like the social outcast he is.

I have to object to that. I mean, aside from the misogynist part; those are horrible. Nobody benefits from treating weird-yet-harmless people like dirt. If you do that, punch yourself.

Reddit is a hotbed for racist, misogynist and abhorrent people? Yeah, there are small sub-reddits with some sick people populating them, but by and large reddit has had a pretty good effect on society from a civil-rights standpoint.

The bill has a provision that basically allows any site or payment service to stop listing or servicing any site it considers to be infringers. This would allow sites such as google, which is partnered to YouTube, to delist every competing video portal, leaving only YouTube Comcast, which owns NBC, could block access to any rivaling content providers to NBC from users of their internet. And this is all with the companies discretion while being immune to consequences
The comcast thing is outdated but the other is still very true.
Glad to see all those republicans flipping their positions, though I'm sure it's because they're afraid of being voted out of office rather than because they suddenly found a moral compass. Hopefully the dems will follow suit. I won't be at all surprised if all of these same people come back in support of a "less bad" version of SOPA/PIPA, though.

This is a pretty awesome victory for the common people, though it's sort of a shame that we can only really rally together to fight something that has a direct impact on our daily lives. Wikipedia's sure as hell not bringing itself down for Iran (nor should it).
It's nice to know this sort of thing isn't completely out of our hands, though. Politicians are ultimately nothing without the support of the majority.
When people actually unite for a common cause, they are unstoppable. Next step is to prevent your elected officials from invading Iran.
After this switch, there is now roughly thirty people for and thirty people opposed. It's not dead in the water yet. And as Obama taught us with the NDAA a month ago, "opposition" doesn't guarantee a vote against something once it's in front of them.

From: SantaRPG | #086 If SOPA doesn't pass, it will be the best thing that happened to america. Hundreds of thousands of our youth are actually calling congress and making a difference, and even when our reps don't listen, we're learning their names so we can have them kicked the hell out next time it comes to a vote.
Yup, people are realizing that they can actually do things that make an actual difference, instead of this 75% apathy or whatever we have in America.

Arguing improvable factors of what's likely going to happen or not going to happen as a result of SOPA is besides the point when weighed against the more common rationale of not wanting to live in a state where the path to the possibility is wide open.
Just because a loaded gun isn't likely to go off if no one's there to pull the trigger doesn't mean I want it pointing at my face forever.
