But Square basically decided what the canon outcome of FFVII is, regardless of what choices you make.
But there's a difference between "they were nicer to each other in FF7 and hooked up at the end" and "they weren't as nice to each other in FF7 and thus only really finally hooked up a bit after the game ended". You do make a genuine (minor, but genuine) change. Plus the fault for sloppy writing, if there were any, would fall on Advent Children, not FF7.

Doesn't sound much different than what you guys are claiming happens in FFVIII!

"So cold. I am always by your side." "There ain't no gettin' off of this train we on!"
Well to be fair if you changed say the scene on the spaceship if you were nasty to Rinoa to be less uh... ~Squall and Rinoa Tee Hee~ I'd have been sorta satisfied with it even if nothing else changed. That's the main scene where it's just too much.

Uh, yes it does. It does completely sound different to the point that if I didn't know you better I'd be positive you were trolling. I don't know how you can begin to think there's no difference between the end point of the relationship within the game itself changing based your actions and the important parts of the relationship being identical regardless of whether or not you saw a large chunk of the scenes that are needed to make it feel natural.

The major thing is that Advent Children is a movie, a non-interactive medium. So it's ok and in fact necessary for them to decide what they want and then go with it.
FF8 on the other hand, is a game. And the chief characteristic of games that differentiate them from other mediums is that you have (or should have) an impact on what happens. I'm not saying FF7 did it perfectly (Persona 4 on the other hand did that part very well) but the choices you make does have an influence on the outcome. To not have that but still give options that seem like they ought to bring different outcomes is to missuse the possibilities offered by the medium.

Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.
You have plenty of opportunities in FFVIII to alter scenes based on decisions you make. It may not ultimately affect the "final objective" of the game, but they're there.
Well I want hugely altered scenes this is a weakness FF games have in general your responses not actually doing anything. Why even have them? Makes it pretty pointless.
But I'll settle for slightly altered scenes I guess.

For me, they're "just for fun." Getting different responses based on dialogue choices is enjoyable enough for me, like picking choices to intentionally troll Zell.

It just raises the question of why they're there. In FFVII, your choices alter some events in the long run. In a lot of games, you can alter the actual "final objective" (so to speak) based on your decisions. In FFVIII, you affect the scene as its happening, sure, but no more than that, and its most visible effect is to give players opportunities to make the Squall/Rinoa relationship (a pretty big deal in the overall plot!) less cohesive. I don't think that's a worthwhile trade, not even close.

Mistake you're making - overlooking the fact that we might not want to be saved.
They're there for fun. That's all it is for me. I don't really care much about how much in changes in the long run. I want to see the immediate differences, and that's enjoyable enough for me.
I think that's "okay" (though not ideal) but yeah like Panthera said FFVIII has the problem of the "fun scenes" making the love plot direction jump around too damn much. Squall comes off as a schizo basically.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Meh, I don't really think so. The scenes where you get no choice in Squall's reaction do enough to keep it on track, I think, and you generally get no say on what he actually thinks in his mind. You usually only get a choice on what he says out loud, which are often two different things for Squall.
