- Vote from 0-10, use 5 as an average, decimals are okay. - Don't be lame and use alts or anything like that. - Only vote if you've played enough of the respective game to have a good feel for the character. This if of course subjective for the character so you'll have to use your own judgment. But if you played fifteen minutes of the game once, you probably don't know the character well enough. - Nominations are closed until further notice.
I like how the bottom tier is made up of little girls and Umaro

SHE GETS CAPTURED (or otherwise removed from the party) TOO DAMN MUCH. But, I do like her in battle, and thats what saves her from getting a horrible score.

A staple formula for FF villains: "They only do this, but lets kill them anyway!!!"
Rinoa gets captured exactly twice in the game and only very briefly both times. It's not like you devote hours and an entire level to rescuing her. That would be for when she doesn't get captured...!
She gets into typical "damsel in distress" at the end of virtually every disc, but it's not quite as bad as people make it out to be.

"But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed."
Its bad enough that you're forced to use a 4th character often enough that you can basically pretend Rinoa doesn't exist if you don't care much about her limits; IE if one likes a party of Squall Zell Rinoa, and uses Selphie when Rinoa's gone, shes GOING to be built enough that Squall Zell Selphie can take on the endgame reliably. Not to mention that shes gone for basically half of Disc 3 for spoiler reasons.
And this is assuming one DOESN'T know how to just BREAK FF8. Once you have that knowledge, then yeah, the only major differences are the limits.

I think I was the only person not put off by the romance in this game (maybe not completely true she has got some good votes) But yeah I didn't think there was anything wrong with her.
I don't particularly like her, but she doesn't do anything to make me angry. She does leave the party twice, but given the system, it's never a particularly sharp penalty. She doesn't quite make the "I like this character" threshold of 8, but I feel that she's got a personality and she improves the game for being in it. So yeah, 7.5.

Worst FF character. In the running for all time worst character in anything. I'd give her a slight bonus because she's good looking but it cannot begin to quell my hatred. But yeah, just so pushy, so annoying, and does her best to ruin FFVIII and Squall outright.
I think I'd hate her a bit less if Squall didn't have any dialogue options when talking to her, but she kinda ruins the plot of FFVIII if you're like me and find her annoying and thusly pick all of the negative dialogue options for her, so Squall's thought process basically goes "you're annoying"->"stop bugging me"->"ugh"->"I LOVE YOU~" Like I don't mind the game forcing an annoying love interest on you but don't make it seem like I can blow her off and then have it mean nothing. FFVIII is the worst FF when it comes to "the illusion of choice" problem, and 9 times out of 10 it's Rinoa's fault.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
FFVIII never gave you the illusion of choice! Giving you the option to be mean to Rinoa doesn't mean you're given the illusion of choice to potentially reject her down the line!
Squall and Rinoa are hugging on the logo and the entire intro to the game shows them together, for cryin' out loud! Heck, the opening FMV shows the entire climax of the "love story!"
Sure it does. Why else would they let me be mean to her for the whole game. Games where this is implemented properly it actually does matter! It just comes off as incredibly forced if you pick the mean choice every time, which any sane person would.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
The game shows you from even before the game starts that Squall and Rinoa end up together.
The game literally does nothing to mislead you into thinking they won't end up together, unless you think giving him the option to say mean things to Rinoa (like he's given the option to say mean things to everyone) leads you to believe you have a choice.
Basically, the entire game isn't building up to "ARE THEY GONNA GET TOGETHER?!" but rather "How are they going to end up together?" The game pretty much shows you they're going to end up together.
There's a big difference.

"I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now."
Yeah and the implication early game is that Cloud and Aeris end up together too. There's always hope.
But I mean, I don't mind being stuck with Rinoa but don't give an option to be a total dick to her right up until Squall randomly snaps. That's just dumb writing.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
But FFVII never shows Cloud and Aerith together before the game even begins or give you any indication that it's one of the major plot points of the game like FFVIII does. FFVIII is literally about Squall learning to fall in love. It's not about beating Ultimecia. It's about Squall learning to fall in love.
And it's not as random as you make it sound, but that's not something I particularly care to argue right now!

"The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..."
If the game was about Squall learning to fall in love you'd think Quistis or Selphie would've been alternatives-- a good love story in a video game would give you some choice there-- if it was really the point of the story. Like Squall and Rinoa don't really have any chemistry I recall it's just Rinoa constantly being pushy and Squall eventually giving in, presumably because she's good looking. Quistis and Selphie could've played this part too, really.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Rinoa isn't even good looking. Demon nose from hell <_<
Being given dialogue options that allow you to undermine and contradict aspects of the story that can't be affected *is* sloppy. It doesn't matter if you can expect that it won't change the ending, that doesn't change the fact that some guy with the IQ of a moderately clever cucumber thought to himself "Hmm, we have this story idea, what could make it better...I know, let's make half the players see a less coherent version of it"

I can't really remember anything about her, except that when you first meet her, she's up-front and outgoing. So I guess she's meant to be a foil to Squall's character. There's also the whole floating through space part, which I feel is sort of iconic. Not bad, but not good. Not annoying, but not likable. Perfectly average.
From: Lopen | #035 I don't even remember this "before the game even begins" thing you're talking about anyway.
In the Liberi Fatali FMV, they show lines from Squall and Rinoa making their "promise," and they show the part where he rescues her and they embrace as well. It's right there in the opening scene of the game!
And Rinoa is basically presented as THE love interest from the moment she's introduced, where Squall's basically fascinated with her from the moment he finishes dancing with her and then he summarily rejects Quistis when she tries to open up to him and get him to open up to her in the Secret Area.
And there are many parts of the game where Squall and Rinoa are "nice" to each other where you're not given any choice in the matter. Heck, even in games in the series where you do get scenes where "affection points" matter, Cloud still ends up with Tifa in the end and Tidus still ends up with Yuna. Maybe you want some alternate scenes where Squall interacts with Quistis or Selphie rather than Rinoa or something, but that's not a big deal.
I don't really get this complaint, I guess, because I never really cared about wanting to choose who he ends up with to start with.
