Q: Okay thats nice, but how exacty does training work?

A: When you are at the "grey" ranks (Private -> Sergeant**, which are indicated by a grey rank icon) you want to do all of your training at the 'Marketplace'. So after you have a handful of soldiers you will go to the city center and click the [Patrol The Marketplace] button. This will generate a random situation which will lead you to a small battle. You and your soldiers will all earn experience from this battle.

When you are at the "blue ranks" you want to do all of your training on the best possible terrain for your army. If you are training in Iceland for example your soldiers will receive a 5% bonus to their stats on Plains and a 4% bonus to their stats on Snow. And so if you are training terrain neutral units like Champions or Halbediers you will want to train on +5% Plains. If you are training more specific units like Vikings you would prefer to do your training on Snow where you get +7% instead. It all depends on which country you join and what kind of units you are using, but from Lieutenant through General you want to train on your best terrain only. The terrain you train on depends on the terrain of the city you are in. If you are in Reykjavik (which is snow) you will have a [Patrol The Snow] option available. If you are in Vik (which is plains) you will have a [Patrol the Plains] option available at the city center instead.

After General* you switch from Terrain Training to what is called "Border Training". To do border training you have to be in a city that borders an enemy city. From there you can click [Go to the Border] at the city center and there will be a button that says "Attack" beneath the "Border Training" line. Do not press any of the attack buttons ABOVE the border training line, those are for something else entirely. Border training is the most difficult kind of training and it will get significantly harder after you hit General** and after you hit Baron.

Q: All my soldiers are injured, what do I do?

A: Wait. You can take a look at all of your injured soldiers at the hospital page. It shows how much gold it would cost to 'Force Heal' them, and it also indicates how many "Ticks" it takes for them to heal naturally. A "Tick" occurs every 30 minutes (at :00 and :30) and your soldiers will all regain 30 HP every tick. Depending on how much gold you have you can usually pay to heal all your soldiers up instead of waiting the entire time for them to heal naturally.

Q: What are heroes and how do they help me?

A: Heroes are your own personal Super Units. You can add 3 heroes to your army. The first one because available at Corporal (so don't forget to buy a hero onces you have 91 XP). The second slot opens up at Lieutenant (1001 XP), and the 3rd hero slot is available at General (8001 XP).

Once you own a hero the [Armory] button becomes available and you will go to the armory page to equip your heroes with items and teach them skills that will be vital to your armies success. The most important hero skills are normally Leadership, Healing, Merchant and Trainer and it is important to learn how to make good use of them.

Q: So I know how to train, but how does one country kill another country?

A: The first thing you need to understand is what an 'Army' is. Once your commander is a General you are allowed to set up armies. And when you set up an army everyone beneath your rank is allowed to join it. When you are in an army then when the army leader walks from city to city you will walk with them, whether you are online or not. That is how everyone from the country stays together, by all having joined the same army.

And so it is these armies that are used to attack enemy cities. But when an army is used to attack a city it will also become disbanded and everyone who was in the army will have to rejoin again after. And so when you are going to attack an enemy city you will have someone set up a new army on the spot, which people who are online will join. That way when the army is dropped on the city everyone is online and available to rejoin afterwards. Armies used against cities are known as Strike Forces or a SF for short.

And so countries will go around the map with their "Main Army" containing everyone and then they will create numerous smaller armies to capture cities. And then when the enemy is reduced to 1 city that is when the main army gets used to finish them off. There is obviously quite a bit of strategy and planning involved, but that is basically what is going on.

Q: Is this opening message missing anything important? Let me know. This is just something I threw together and so I'm not sure if I've covered everything.

COMING SOON
COMING SOON

I am also in the process of writing out our detailed plan for the next age. It is going to be Age 117 and it will be starting on Wednesday Morning at 6 AM PST, which is 9 AM PST. It will be a very intense and VERY fast strategy that is going to require a lot of effort on day 1 to be successful. The full exploded plan will be coming as soon as I have it typed and ready.

So please tag for now and be ready to read the full plan a bit later. We still have over 30 hours until new age and so hopefully we can get everyone ready to do what we need to do.

Opening note from FD:
If you have never played TLK and want to learn then please send me a message and allow me to give you my referall link. You don't have to do this of course, but it will help me out and reward me for putting in the time to teach people to play the game. I'll teach you anyways, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.

And of course the link to the game is www.lastknights.com

~FAQ~

Q: What is The Last Knights?

A: The Last Knights is an online strategy game. It labels itself a "Massive multiplayer real-time strategy" (MMRTS). A description that I use for it which is somewhat close to correct is a "game of risk in which you contribute one army to your country, which consists of many such armies". TLK is also a TEXT BASED strategy game. All you get shown is a read-out of battle results which indicates how many injuries and deaths were received on either side. So if you are looking for shiny graphics then look elsewhere. If you are content with text based strategy then dive right in.

Q: So, how does TLK work?

A: The first thing you do is pick which country you are going to join. When a new age begins there are only 10 slots open in each of the 30 available countries. When you first join a country your commander rank is Private and you have 360 wage with which to hire soldiers. And so you will go to the barracks and spend your wage to hire the kind of soldiers you want to build your army. You will go into battles to earn XP for your commander. Your commander will rank up which will increase how much wage you have available to hire soldiers with.

Your soldiers will ALSO be getting their own XP during these battles and so as you rank up you will be able to promote them as well. And so so training your army to a high rank is a process which takes time.

Q: And how does training work?

A: First you buy as many soldiers as your rank will allow.

Secondly you figure out which kind of training you should be doing (Marketplace, Terrain or Border training are the 3 options)

Then you fight battles of the correct type to gain XP for yourself and your soldiers.

It is going to be Age 117 and it will be starting on Wednesday Morning at 6 AM PST, which is 9 AM PST.

ok... wait what?

And I won't be getting a hero medal this age unless I get really lucky, so it probably won't happen.

Age 117 Plan, in short:

1) Join Egypt
2) Get HC up in 2 hours
3) Declare war on Iceland. This will involve at least 13 SFs to reach the Icelandic Border (At most 19). It will also involve at least 9 war starts (at most 15).
4) Kill Iceland and ask everyone else to take back the land we took on our way north.
5) Proceed with the age normally, playing Egypt from the Iceland position.

This is how it is going to be accomplished:

-2 Commanders will dismiss-train with Spearmen/Pikemen until they reach General*
-3 Commanders will dismiss-train with Spearmen/Pikemen until they reach General (8001 XP and then they must STOP)
-5 Commanders will dismiss-train with Footmen/Swordsmen until they reach Captain*** (6001 XP and then they must STOP)
-EVERYONE is going to be assigned a different city to start in. When you begin the age walk to the assigned city and then suicide-in-country (from your profile page) to replenish your Move Points back to 3.
-From your initial city you will use your assigned units to dismiss-train until you have 1001 XP. Then you will buy as many more soldiers as you can and then walk to one of the two Plains cities to finish your training there.
-It is extremely important that we make sure we don't buy any units in Cairo or Alexandria until after we walk to our assigned locations and train all the way up to Lieutenant first. And make sure you buy until your wage is as close to -310 as you get BEFORE walking back to Cairo.

I am now going to type out two detailed guides. One for the 5 users who will use footmen, and one for the 5 users who will be using spearmen. Please post in this topic letting me know which of the two you would prefer to follow so I can begin to assign starting locations to people.

IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE 5 FOOTMAN/SWORDMAN USERS FOLLOW THIS GUIDE

~1. Position Yourself~

1a) Join Egypt. Do NOT buy any units yet.
1b) Walk to the city that has been assigned to you. Refer to your map to figure out how to get their from Cairo.
1c) Now suicide-in-country to get your MP back for free. The suicide button is located from your [Profile] page. Do NOT suicide OUT of country.
1d) Now log back in, as suiciding will cause you to log out.

~2. Let The Trainign Begin~

2a) Go to the Barracks [hotkey = k] and buy footmen. You will be able to afford 9 right away.
2b) Buy a Hero from the Barracks as well, if it lets you. Usually I am not allowed to buy a hero until Corporal, but I understand the game will sometimes allow people to buy one at Private instead.
2b.2) If you were allowed to buy a hero then make sure you buy it some leather armor in the Armory before you begin training. [Hotkey A for Armory]
2c) Now go to the City Center [Hotkey C] and press the "Patrol the Marketplace" button. This will generate a random scenario which will lead you to a battle. These battles will be fairly easy for a fully healthy army at this level and should rarely result in injuries.

~3. How To Dismiss-Train Through the Grey Ranks~

When you are using the dismiss-training strategy you must do things after every battle.

(1) If any soldiers became injured in the battle go to the Encampment page [E] and dismiss them from your army.
(2) If you have enough wage available to buy more footmen (32 for each apprentice footman) then buy some now. You might have enough wage available because you dismissed some injuries or because your commander got a promotion.
(3) After buying new soldiers you can promote any soldiers who are ready to level up. You do this at the Encampment page also. It is important to buy soldiers before promoting because it is possible to promote soldiers even after you have "run out" of wage. It is better to buy soldiers and promote everything (resulting in a negative wage) than to promote everything and be unable to buy (resulting in a temporarily weaker army)
(4) Keep training at the marketplace

Training through Private will only take 91 XP and should pass quickly. Once you have made the promotion to Corporal you must remember to buy a hero immediately. (Unless you were able to pick one up at Private, of course)

Following these steps of Dismissing, Replacing, Promoting, and Training On should get you to 1001 XP in no time. The idea here is to follow these steps as rapidly as you can. Once you hit lieutenant a few things are going to change.
Before you were lieutenant you could only purchase soldiers down to a wage of 0. After hitting Lieutenant you can now purchase units until your wage is -310. Buy as many soldiers as it will allow you to. (The wage you can purchase down to, which at lieutenant is -310 is known as your "softcap". You can promote beneath this mark, but not beyond your "hardcap" which is double)
Before you were lieutenant you could only have one hero. Now you may purchase a second hero. Do so immediately.
Before you were lieutenant you could train on the easy marketplace, now you must switch to terrain training. Because Plains is better for us than Desert you will need to walk to Cairo to continue your training. Make SURE you stock up on units before walking to Cairo.

~5. Race to the Finish~

So now you are a lieutenant with approximately -300 wage and a bunch of footmen. You also have two heroes and you know what to do with them. And you should also be in a Plains city to finish your training.

The training at this point will be much the same as the Marketplace training was. You access it from the "Patrol The Plains" button at the City Center and it will give you more battle situations to fight through. You will continue to follow the same rules as before.

1) Dismiss injuries as you receive them.
2) Buy more soldiers as you are able
3) Promote soldiers (after buying when possible)
4) Keep training!

With reasonable luck you will not run out of gold while doing this. Just keep doing this until you hit Captain*** and then STOP once you have the required 6001 XP. We are going to need to be very careful this age to make sure we do not over promote our commanders. It is important to have people at different ranks so everyone can join the SFs. We need people to hit the necessary ranks within 2 hours of age start if possible so we can war on time.

And PLEASE make sure you are in our IRC Channel when the age goes up. If for some reason one of the spear users fails at hitting General we will need one of the footman users to come through and train up to 8k XP instead of 6k. Teamwork and communication is crucial.

~4. What To Do With Heroes~

Heroes are going to be the most important factor that will allow you to dismiss-train all the way up to 6001 XP which is where you will be needed for this strategy. It is important to give them the right gear and even MORE important to give them the right skills.

You will want to get the following items on both heroes. I consider this to be a "safe" way to build heroes initially to avoid Hero Injuries.

Level 1) Leather Armor
Level 2) Nothing
Level 3) Kite Shield (requires 2 weight, costs 4k gold)
Level 4) Helmet
Level 5) Bronze Sword
Level 6) Bandages but only IF you can afford them. Gold can be an issue with dismiss-training.
Level 7) If you are doing well on money sell the helmet and buy a Scutum, which is a 4-weight shield. This item costs 10k. Otherwise buy nothing.
Level 8) Same as number 7 although now you can hold both a helmet and a 4-weight shield.
Level 9) Iron Sword
Level 10) Herbs
Level 11) Banner

It might also be a good idea to sell the 4 weight shield to level your leather armor up to a Chainmail once that becomes available (I forget at which level). I think you get better value for the weight used on a larger chestpiece and a smaller shield.

And these are the skills I recommend you get for this strategy.

Hero 1 Skills (purchased at Private or Corporal)
IN THIS ORDER:
-Duelist up to 16
-Healing up to 20
-Leadership up to 10
-Healing up to 30

These skills should last you until your commander has 6001 XP. I reccomend the duelist to make sure that your Hero2 does not get into duels which could result in a hero injury. A Hero injury could immediately end your run and so we cannot afford that. And after the small amount of duelist to prevent Hero2 duels Healing becomes the most important thing. Footmen and Swordsmen can get injured more easily than Pikemen will and so the best way to keep this army strong as you rank is to prevent the injuries before they happen. Every heal you get will save you gold and it will keep your armies XP higher. Both of these things are exceedingly important. And a token amount of leadership is also important to prevent injuries while training.

Eventually you will add in some Trainer and Merchant, and then later on some dueling skills like Agility, Parry and Resilience, but those are long term goals and this is a short term strategy. Remember that the key is speed.

Hero 2 Skills (purchased at Lieutenant)
IN THIS ORDER:
-Healing up to 20
-Leadership up to 10
-Healing up to 30

And again you will go to Merchant and Trainer from here. Hero 2 will not need dueling skills so you can put more into Merchant and Trainer earlier.

And for Hero 3, which you pick up at General, I recommend taking 10 Trainer and 17 Healing right away and then building the same major skills up from there.

I have included lots of healing very early in the build for the footman army heroes and trainer shows up quite late which will be basically the opposite in the spearman guide.

Edit: It bears mentioning that I think footmen will be EASIER to use than spearmen. They will need less XP to be 'finished' and they will include healing earlier in their hero skillset.

It should also be mentioned that those of us who are using spearmen will likely be switching to foot//sword/champs once we reach iceland. Using pikes all the way through is never a good idea. We are just taking the role of spears because they are more difficult, I think.
