I've always hated this one because I feel like my brain is stupid. Why can't it tell!?

It's because your brain does a piss poor job of interpretting data it gets from your eyes.

I find this one really weird because even if I try to cover up the rest of the picture with my hands except for tiles A and B, as long as there's still a little bit of chessboard left I still can't perceive it. You really have to go into an image editor and get rid of stuff to see it properly.

This one's even more insane though:

has to do with how 'blue' is on the line with orange and 'green' is on the line with red, right? >_>

I opened that first picture up in Paint and drew a solid line connecting the two squares, and it seriously looked like the line changed colors as I was drawing it. Crazy.

To clarify on the audio one it is getting higher pitched for a short time, right? I hear it get higher for a few seconds and then snap back repeatedly. I'm not sure if that's the illusion not working on me or the illusion only partially working.

Nope, its never getting higher pitched. It resetting is probably just your brain not being able to adjust to the pattern anymore and rebooting the sound or something

Someone explain the chessboard thing to me, you all say it's amazing but.... how are you figuring out that they are the same color? I don't see anything remarkable going on here.

Copy and paste it on an image program, like Paint or something, and delete every thing except those two squares...then CTRL Z everything and watch stuff happen.

on the audio one it's hard to hear when it resets but you still can tell that it's looping and when your brain focuses on the lower set of tones you can get rid of the feeling that it's ascending into infinity.

it sounds to me like the reset happens at 12 seconds but I can't be sure. listening to that for prolonged periods is actually kind of frustrating.

Yeah this one is cool because the color of the swirls is a mix of the actual green and either orange or pink which makes it look different. The more you zoom out, the greater the difference in color seems, and the opposite if you zoom in.

What more interesting is if you sample the color and just make a bunch of scribbles, the color looks completely different from either swirl.

the chessboard was always the optical illusion i was most caught by. even knowing they are the same i had a time seeing it. only just now looking at it again was i able to force myself to see it as such without the aid of connecting lines or copy/pasting the tile...it just shows how strong our brain is wired to perceive the effects of shading.

the color spiral is similarly freaky, but at least you got some color magic to explain it some. still bizarre how it turns out and all but impossible to detect unless you're really close.

lots of neat audio or visual tricks that can be played on the mind. one reason why "it was real dude i totally saw it" isn't a very reliable thing...

I'm baffled sometimes that we can see at all given all the weird hacks our visual cortex uses to process everything.

It kind of makes me wonder why we need things like Crysis, when our brain just turns the image into crap and mangles it into this horrible collage anyway. And we've still barely scratched the surface of how all this works.

Actually, quite the opposite. Your brain is doing a GREAT job at interpreting the data it gets from your eyes in this case. Imagine how ill-equipped we would be to deal with the real world if something as simple as a shadow made us think the colors actually changed.

This is sort of misleading. The organ is climbing by a half tone with each note, and this never changes. What's going on is that the same tone is being played on multiple octaves at once - as the highest tone goes higher and higher, it eventually drops out and can no longer be heard, while at the same time the lowest tone is gradually coming in. As that lowest tone comes in, it ascends until it gets to the mid-range and you can hear it clearly, and then it ascends into the higher ranges and drops out. It is like the audio version of the visual illusion you see when you look at a barber pole.

This pretty easily leads to the illusion that the sound is always getting higher - you're just not clearly hearing very well what's going on in the highest and lowest ranges of the sound. People with well-trained ears, like musicians, can more easily catch onto this trick. The phenomenon is actually specifically known as a Shepard's Tone. Here's another example:
