Believe this will come out tomorrow. Rough stuff.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co is expected to post a recurring loss of about 100 billion yen ($1.32 billion) in the first half ending on September 30, much worse than the 55 billion loss the company has forecast, the Nikkei business daily reported in its online edition on Wednesday.

They chose to turn off the DS and Wii money printers, and instead turn on the 3DS and Wii U money furnaces.

I don't understand why.

Apparently making tons of money is no longer satisfying, and they're hoping finding exciting ways to lose tons of money will prove more enjoyable.

I'm pretty sure they never posted a loss more than $50 million for a year in the Gamecube era. Though I know the vast majority of their profit usually comes from the 2nd half of the year, so their loss for this year may not end up being so high.

In fact, I'm pretty sure they never had a losing year at all in the Gamecube era. A losing half-year, yes, but they turned a profit every single year through the Gamecube period.

It depends on how well the 3DS sells. Right now, I believe they're still selling each unit at a loss, so they'll need Mario 3D and Mario Kart to sell big numbers to offset that. Total annual losses will probably be under a billion, but I imagine it'll still be pretty big. I'm sure it'll be in that fiscal report tomorrow, what they're anticipating for the whole year.

Yeah, they were quarterly losses in the GameCube era, and I believe it only happened a couple of times (they were fortunate to have the GBA do as well as it did). I don't know that Nintendo has ever actually had a negative year in total.

here's the entirety of Nintendo 2011

Mario Sports Mix (Square-developed, pretty crappy)
Nintendogs
Steel Diver (pretty crap)
Pilotwings (eh, a 7/10 experience)
Ocarina of Time 3D
Rhythm Heaven
Kirby Mass Attack
Star Fox 64 3D
Kirby's Return Dream Land
---- (We are here)
PokePark 2
Super Mario 3D Land
Skyward Sword
Mario Kart 7
Mario & Sonic London Olympics (Sega developed)

so, as far as new, great games goes:

2 Kirbys (1 DS 1 Wii)

that's all we've gotten so far

It's so weird to me how they go through these massive dry spells with NO GAMES.

It happened for a long stretch between Brawl and NSMBWii (excepting Punch-Out!! which is a great rental but nothing more), and it happened again this year too.

The amazing thing to keep in mind with these numbers is that B/W came out this year. Imagine the losses without those!

We seem to have gotten to the point now where Nintendo can't create as many games as they used to due to development costs and begin to put out only 2-3 big games a year like pretty much every other developer out there and everything else is made by 2nd parties. Especially with how often they develop new hardware and reiterations of existing hardware, they seem to have a lot on their plate with just those.

I wouldn't count on Nintendo learning anything from this. Remember, their reaction to the 3DS bombing wasn't to wait out the dry spell until the games people cared about were available, it was to panic and slash the price.

this is a good thing, it's implicitly admitting that the 3DS was a horrible mistake. if they just waited it out and expected that to go well it would show that they were arrogant and haven't learned ****. only problem is that the U is set to follow in the 3DS' footsteps and it's really not something they can evade at this point

Yeesh, the exchange rate is brutal.

"The Nikkei said in its online edition the company had incurred 40 billion yen in foreign exchange losses, mostly against the euro, and would likely also post a first half net loss greater than the 35 billion yen it has projected."

"Nintendo, which makes 80 percent of its sales overseas, is facing a slump in the value of its cash deposits and accounts receivable in foreign currencies as the yen rises, the Nikkei said."

"The games giant behind the Super Mario franchise slashed its full-year operating profit forecast in July to a 27-year low of 35 billion yen, as it cut the price of the 3DS by about one-third to try to boost weak sales."

That won't affect anything, or barely will at the most. Monster Hunter Tri had subscription fees and that still sold colossally. Final Fantasy XI is still pretty popular over there too. And this is Dragon Quest we're talking about.

Eh, Monster Hunter Tri sold about a million, which is great, but a far cry from Monster Hunter Portable. It's not necessary to sell as much when you have a subscription fee, but that's not a situation that's particularly important to Nintendo as it is Square Enix.

I don't know, Nintendo is doing ~5 years between consoles just like they always have in the past. Microsoft and Sony are sort of stuck with technology and Nintendo is just catching up to them

In the long run they'll be fine. Right now this is pretty damn bad, though not entirely unpredictable when you realise that Nintendo have put out basically nothing at all in the first half. Still, they've got a lot of stuff coming in 2012 and should probably recover next year.

But this is what happens when you abandon your most successful console for no reason.
