going with friends>>>>>>>going alone

i wanted to see a movie that none of my friends wanted to see one time, drove to the theater, felt really pathetic and drove away

but you should tell them Moneyball is really good even if you don't care at all about baseball like me

Unless its a comedy or something similar and fun, going with friends can be a hassle. You gotta wait around for everybody's schedules to line-up, I don't really want to talk to them while I'm watching the movie, I don't want them texting me something stupid, blah blah blah. I have no idea why the movies became this social event. You're sitting a dark room, hopefully quietly and not one of those idiots who keeps talking during the movie who thinks he's funny, munch on some popcorn if you got it, then you leave and b*** about it on message boards and Facebook.

I worked in a movie theater for 4 years in high school

I can safely say the BEST movie experience is a totally empty or nearly empty theater when you are alone. You can sit how you want, not deal with nasty people eating and chewing and coughing, and get lost in the picture.

because movies make more money when the audience is engaged in laughter/terror/other such things. it's a communal experience, and one you enjoy more with friends and loved ones. not all movies are like that, but even if I watch something like There Will Be Blood, the second I leave the theatre I want to talk to someone about it.

No, I've always had at least one other person with me.

If I cared about seeing movies on opening night it'd be another story, but I'm okay with waiting a week or two when people are free to go.

Its cool to have someone there with you to talk about it, but I've read so many posts over the years of low self-esteem having mothaf***ers wondering if they go to the movies *whispers* alone. Like everyone's gonna point and laugh at you in a dark room because you came there by yourself. I'm reading about people who actually felt PATHETHIC about going to see a movie by themselves. Like...what!? This isn't like going to a resturant where everybody's being social and you're sitting there alone acting like you doing something on your phone, or going to a dance without a date and feeling out of place without a companion. Its one of the most anti-social things mainstream audience pertake in. Whether you're with friends or not, you sit down, shut up, and watch the movie.

I will never understand the stigma of "omgosh Im going to the movies alone, I'm a loser now". Its one of the most hysterical, bizarre social phenomenons I've encountered on a regular basis.

Totally. Like I said in my first post, I go alone all the time, I see nothing wrong with it, and I'm quiet when watch, but I'd rather go with friends.

it's probably because for a good number of people, seeing movies on the weekend is the only feasible time for them (homework to do during the week, class or work in the morning, etc.), and if it's the weekend what are you doing alone? you should be spending time with friends

I've watched movies at my home alone, but never gone to a theater by myself. I'm not a big film person though.

As for dining, if I'm by myself I will get fast food. I don't think I will ever go to a sit-down restaurant alone, unless I become fabulously wealthy or something.

I only go to restaurants for the social experience, so it feels pointless to go alone.
